  • Banner has said something along the lines of "we're not going to plug every hole" so I wouldn't be surprised if we don't take a corner or safety.

I like the approach, instead of frantically trying to plug holes with whatever piece is available I think he's going after the best talent out there.

I'm hoping we grab the bpa in round 3, if it's a tight end I wouldn't be upset.

With the emphasis on pass rush and disrupting & confusing the quarterback our DBs won't be pressured as much as they were in Jaurons vanilla man2man no blitz defense.

We'll probably see a lot of zone this season with many blitzes, we'll give up some plays but also give our guys in the defensive backfield the opportunity to make some big plays as well.

Ya I don't mind that approach at this point in time. It will bring out the nay sayers... "Who is going to play corner??? We have nobody!" But its better to take a player you want than a player you reach for because you think you need him.

This staff must not be that worried about Skrine as the general fan base is.(he did look BAD at points) but they didn't go out and get a free agent, and they didn't snap up Dee.

Who knows, maybe in a different scheme and a big pass rush, Skrine will be a machine. But what the hell do I know.

(By the way BadNewsBrowns, that avatar is freaking awesome.... I laugh everytime I see it)

  • haha ... thanks.. It was in the PD last week and I had to snag it up.

  • I wouldn't mind taking Baccari Rambo is he's still available.

  • 🙂 I like Mingo and we need linebackers too but we need to help Weeden too. A TE would be nice too. A cornerback and a safety too.

Yea, my point: I understand that NFL Scouts essentially give out grades or ranks to all players like on a test or a straight player rank.

Lets say that with the Browns 104th pick you still have on your board (an available) a grade on FS Baccari Rambo who ranks 104.....and also available is #103 OT Brennan Williams and #102 QB Matt Scott . To me, you take the guy at the position you need....Rambo, and not the OT or QB you don't need at that point, because that rank is so close.

But.....if OT Dallas Thomas who is ranke #91, or TE Gavin Escobar who is ranked #89 is still on the board....what should the Browns do? Will they pass on Rambo and go with the TE or OT?

That is where, I think, the choice gets tough.

(I used CBS Sports rank for the above)

  • I get it but we still need players. I have lived through some really bad drafts in the last 10 years. I get what you are saying though Gipper. It isn't easy to get the right player for your team.

The choice would be much easier if say, a Keenan Allen....who CBS Sports ranks #46 overall were there.

Even though we wouldn't need a WR....I don't see how a team could pass on talent like that if it dropped. (but I am sure he won't drop)

....But what if Keenan Allen is there when the Browns #68 pick crops up......and he the #46 ranked player is available....but so is #64 Phillip Thomas FS or #69 Tyrann Mathieu CB or #63 Darius Slay CB.

Do you take the much higher rated WR.....or the lesser ranked CB or FS?

  • I am not so confident at this moment in the Browns defensive backfield.

    Starters are:

    Haden CB

    Ward s

    Hagg S

    Skrine CB

    backed up by:

    Owens CB

    Barnes CB

    Bademosi CB

    Wade CB

    Richardson S

    Gipson S

    Miller CB

I am by no means as confident in either half the starters of this group nor in the backups. I see us having 2 NFL quality DBs in Haden and Ward....and a bunch of backups and special teamers who can fill in.

The Browns have the following picks left:

    #68

    #104

    #139

    #164

    #175

    #227

The experts have said that while this draft class doesn't have big name stars, it does have a lot of quality depth.

Thus, to me, the Browns with those 6 picks need:

    A. At least one starting DB (FS or CB) and another at least quality backup DB

    B. Another OG to throw in the mix to compete with Pinkston/Lauvao/Miller/Greco/Shaw

    C. Another WR to throw in the mix to compete with Nelson/Benjamin/Cooper/Norwood

    D. A fullback

    E. Another best player available (it could even be a late round QB)

Pretty close. We might be able to squeeze out 2 starting DBs at FS and CB in the 3rd & 4th. We will draft a G, and possibly a WR. What you forgot is that we will certainly be drafting a TE somewhere in there.

What would help is if Brad Smelley could take over the Fullback position....then we wouldn't need to draft one. Maresuck seems like he should be out the door, because he has failed miserably.

But, right now they have Smelley as a TE...one of 5 along with Jordan Cameron/Kellen Davis/Gary Barnidge/Dan Gronkowski.

I don't know the quality of the two FAs picked up Davis/Barnidge. Does this staff seem them as meeting their TE needs? If not then yea, a TE would be good.

To me, need beats out BPA in the later rounds unless its such a giant talent discrepancy that it would be stupid not to take them.

If you we're going purely by ranking, I'd say a position of need adds 10-20 spots to a players rank.

For instance, if Rambo is #104, but he's available when we are picking and there are players ranked #95 and #96, you still pick Rambo because he is a position of need and the talent level ahea of him isn't a huge improvement. Essentially, Rambo would be ranked anywhere from #84-#94 in that case because of the need for that position.

In these later rounds, it's a lot more hit or miss but I think, for the most part, the talent level is roughly about the same.

The third round talent in this draft would be second round talent in a lot of other drafts, however. What this draft lacked in top caliber players it made up for in middle round depth

If we can get Rambo or Slay with our 3rd rd. pick, I'd be one happy dude. Also I think it will make the Mingo pick look a lot better to some people who disagree with the pick.
