Not A Surprise Here, I Guess?

  • It just wasn't "exciting" enough for some people I guess; however, each move we made seems to have been done meticulously and with the goal of building a championship-calliber team, IMHO. Sure, their draft was a D as far as "sexiness" factor, but seems pretty smart when you stand back and think about it instead of instantly reacting out of emotion.

What percentage of 4th and 5th rounders become starters?? I'll tell you, it's very low.

What percentage of 3rd and 4th rounders become starters?? I'll tell you, slightly higher...

Those trades make sense given the amount of youth already on this team. Now we have ammo in next year's draft to fill in the gaps on a young team that will be another year better.

I think people are just angry b/c they have less players to be excited about until camp opens when we realize our "diamond in the rough" 4th round pick was a bust, just like 90% of the other teams in the league...

  • The grades are what they are, after a day to think about it I'm not really pissed that we banked a few picks for next year. Maybe its just me but this draft had NO wow factor as far as talent goes. After the first round the pool got real thin and by the 3rd you were getting guys that were 5-6-7 round type guys compared to previous years. So too bank a couple picks for next year makes total sense to me.

The anger comes from knowing that the other teams in our diviision used the draft to get a lot better, and the Browns did not.

Again, based purely on the gross numbers of picks that each team had, and yes, to do it right these guys would have to include the selection of Josh Gordon in this draft:

    Pick #1: Mingo

    Pick #2: Josh Gordon

    Pick #3: McFadden

Pick #4: tba next year (3rd round)

Pick #5: tba next year (4th round)

    Pick #6: Jamoris Slaughter

    Pick #7A: Armonty Bryant

    Pick #7b: Garrett Gilkey

The grade should in essence be "incomplete".

    Pick#

You missed Bess. He is a part of the draft since draft picks were used to get him.

Absolutely. I meant to when I began typing this but forgot to put him on there at the proper point.

  • Mingo, Bess, McFadden, plus 3 developmental players with potential to be starters - not terrible by any stretch of the imagination. Throw in Josh Gordon and you're looking at a pretty handy draft.

  • It's funny that when the experts say something good about the Browns, everyone is like "They're the experts and we trust them."

Whenever they say something bad about the Browns, it's "Fuck them, they don't know what they're talking about. Fucking experts, my ass".

Face it, our draft was not good. Just saying that improved isn't enough; every team made improvements. We failed to improve our roster as much as our competition did.

After saying all season long that we would "make a splash in FA" and that we would prove to be a different team, we seem to be making the same mistakes we have always made.

Jimmy Haslam is a liar and our FO doesn't seem to be different. Until they prove to be different, that's the case.

Did they? You know that... how again??

A couple years from now we might be talking about how genius this draft was for us... or not... the point is that NOBODY knows right now how well each draft went.

  • McFadden will start Game 1.

Slaughter will be starting by midseason, after he finishes injury rehab.

Bryant and Gilkey will earn playing time this year.

Again and again and again....our draft was "not good" merely because it was lite in numbers. The basis for low draft grade was the low numbers of picks we had.....and the fact that 3 of the 5 were in rounds 6 and 7.

So, sure, this draft isn't going to be graded high because it is "incomplete"...and because like a nutty professor, those draft evaluators...whose raw scores I would agree with....only are looking at the results on the multiple choice quiz....and are not including the essay questions. Josh Gordon/Davone best....and two higher picks in next year's draft are our essay questions.

I agree that I don't like deferring those choices for a year as I too wanted talent now. But I do understand what they are doing, I guess.

A few years back I think it was Bill Belichick or Parcells or someone who trade a couple of 7th rounders they had one year for a couple of 6th rounders.....then the following year they traded those picks up for a 5th rounder....then the following year they traded that 5th rounder for a 4th rounder, then again that 4th rounder for a third rounder.

I think by the time it was done, that team turned two low 7th round picks into like a 2d or 3rd round pick.

I guess the same principle applies here.

ok i've tried to pin you down before, but obviously you are mr. clean character so i can't bet you a beer. but i'll bet you ten bucks that what you just said doesn't happen.

McFadden very likely to start game one, and from all reports Sgt Slaughter was a day 2 pick before his injury. If he comes back as good as he was then it's very believable that he could start by midseason. Not sure about the 7th rounders though!

  • We didn't trade down and we didn't get honey badger and we didn't get rambo, if that's the biggest problem, we will be ok. We lost games last year by 7 or less, having a mediocre team. Haden being out really screwed us the first 4. We competed pretty good for what we had. Our Offense is 1 year better and healthy, and our D has great depth and pretty good pass rushers. If we didnt get Vaccaro or Reid at Fs the rest is a crap shoot. We got a 5' almost 10 db that is very good to go opposite Haden, and we Mingo to wreak havoc on QBs for years to come. We fucking stole Bess for a 4th round trade of picks. We also got a KR is Dion Lewis in a trade, we also have anther wr Wilson who caught 71 passes with the Bills the year before. We drafted some Oline depth and by the way we got Faulk Oline from LSU as a UDFA, who is a fucking beast. For once we have quality depth on Defense and on offense. You guys gotta let these guys show you something before you call them garbage. Go Browns!!

Can't pass comment on the 7th rounders, but yeah I'll match a beer. Logistics might be tricky, being that I'm in London, but sure, I'm game 😁

see this is what pisses me off about you sunshine people. nobody said anyone was garbage. that's what you said. not me. then you say all you guys are doing is whining. no that's what's in YOUR mind.

i like mingo as a pick. ahead of millner....? in my book no. but i'm no GM and neither are you. so no probs.

let's talk about the fact that 'IF THE BROWNS FO DID" as a matter of record get a chance to move down to say 10-15ish slot and get a 2nd round pick, would you have done it? most draft pukeniks had mingo rated in just that range SO nobody is saying picking mingo #6 means mingo is garbage, it just means if he is garbage we coulda gotta a bag of that trash and added another in the second, maybe with some old cigs a sip of tango and a winning lotto ticket.

  • I like the Mingo pick but with so many saying he is the "boom or bust" type well... I don't know how that could not make you nervous as a Browns fan.

Not sunshine here man, just saying how people didn't like the draft because of who we got, and already trashing the new guys. Everyone is entitled an opinion and can want who they want, but to say who we got was a bad draft before any of these guys can perform is not a fair deal. They say others in our division got better, yes they did, they drafted players of need. The Bengals drafted Eiffert in the 1st round, is that a good pick, fuck yeah is because he is good. Do they need him, no they have Grisham, but they picked who they wanted and Im sure their fans wanted someone else and bitched about it because they wanted someone else, but at the end of the day they got a good player and so did we. If we had a trade down and got Mingo, then hell yeah I would have loved it. Lets be honest we could have used any of the players in the top 15, excluding the OTs. The fact is that we got MIngo, also not having a second is really a wash because we got Gordon last year for it, and he is going to be a good one. The accusing people of bitching is because of the day of the draft some ppl were talking the biggest shit about not getting Tyrann, and using CAPS making sure we all knew how pissed they were and then degraded every pick afterwards.

  • Well before the draft I said the only thing guaranteed was disappointment 😆

So we trade our 4th and 5th because they thought there was no talent? I'm sure there will be at least a few solid starters in the NFL from those rounds, and as of now it's hard to have a lot of faith that the Browns will make good use of the picks we aquired for next year.

  • draft aside, bengals are now the best team in our division and we play to our potential we will compete with them for the title.

wow! the clouds are clearing and the sky is looking blue!

nah. just cracked a ltr of courvoisier.

still if weeds plays like HE Fing SHOULD we will be right there.

We are so used to the bust factor that when you see a possibility of it then we assume thats whats going to happen. Any player in the top 10 can be a bust. Is not being an all pro left tackle in the AFC a bust? What do they gauge bust on, We have J. Thomas, who is the all pro in the AFC, if Fisher does not dethrone him, is he bad, same goes for Luke Joeckel. Only time will tell about Mingo and the rest of our guys. If Mingo gets 4-7 sacks as a rookie, I think thats pretty respectable, he should get more with Hortons Defense for sure though. I think we are going to surprise this year and win the division. Last year we more then held our own with less talent then this year on D, and we added some good players. We lost 6 games by 7 or less, and were out coached by a few more. We have some greats coaches this year that will coach these young guys up and put them in position to win more then last year.
