Afc North Draft Grades....five Years Hence
-
As I have stated elsewhere, one cannot truly judge a draft until about 5 years later. So here are the current status of players drafted by AFCN teams 5 years ago. I am actually only going to document active players. There are a number of other players drafted by these teams who are no longer active.
I will give the team, and who they played for in the 2012 season. This is from the 2008 draft:
Ravens:
Joe Flacco Top pick... starting QB for Ravens
Ray Rice starting RB for Ravens
Tavares Gooden played with San Fran
Oneil Cousins, played for Browns
Tom Zbikowski, played for Colts
Haruki Nakamura, played for Panthers
Bengals:
Keith Rivers, Top pick...played with Giants
Jerome Simpson...with Bengals
Pat Sims, with Bengals
Andre Caldwell, played for Denver
Anthony Collins, with Bengals
Corey Lynch, with Chargers
Steelers:
Rashard Mendenhall...played with Steelers (but dropped after this past season)
Tony Hills, played for Indy
Ryan Mundy TE, with Steelers...but FA this spring, now with Giants
Browns:
Aytahba Rubin....starts for Browns
So, it seems pretty clear to me that the Ravens had the best draft of 5 years ago seeing they had a couple of stars from that draft lead them to Super Bowl wins.
Next comes the Bengals with still 3 contributors on that team with them
Then I would say it is tie between Browns and Steelers, though, in reality in this coming year the Steelers will have no players left on their roster from that draft with Osama Bin Mendenhall going to the Cards and Mundy going to the Giants.
The Browns will have a solid DT in Rubin left over from that draft.

Gipper this doesnt prove a thing. Seriously. Three players total on there even worth talking about. Flacco, Rice and Rubin.

Jerome Simpson played for Vikings this past season

And if compare most other drafts in recent years, it's clerar why the Browns stink and why the other AFC North teams are better. And now "the all knowing one," Michael Lombardi seems to think he outsmarted his AFC North counterparts by hoarding all those draft picks and making that trade with the Steelers. The Browns AFC rivals are laughing again at how the Browns make it so easy for them to win the draft vs. the Browns even when they draft lower.

I think it proves that of the 4 teams, it was the Ravens who by far got the most out of their draftees at that point in time...5 years when these player should be in the prime of their careers.
I see what you say that of all those players taken...in the 2013 season only 3 will likely remain with the team that drafted them....and be solid players.
So, going into their 6th season with these draftees, I think the grades could be:
Ravens A
Browns C
Steelers/Bengals D

Considering you're saying to include someone davone bess in the grades for this year's draft, you probably have to include the guys we traded for in 2008, Cory Williams (2nd Round) and Shaun Rogers (3rd Round plus Leigh Bodden). Williams was on the team for 2 years - his wikipedia page barely mentions the browns:
On February 20, 2008, the Packers placed the franchise tag on Williams.[3] Ten days later, Williams was traded to the Cleveland Browns for a second-round draft pick.[4]
That's it. Nothing more. Next words are "Detroit Lions" - in exchange for a 5th rounder.
I'm not up to date on what these guys achieved while in Cleveland since I'm not to the game, but when you factor all this in, the use of the draft picks that year was pretty poor, Rubin aside.
and do we include the first round pick, which had been traded a year previously to acquire Brady Quinn? If so, you basically say the 2008 draft picks gave us:
Quinn
Williams
Rogers
Beau Bell
Martin Rucker
Rubin
Paul Hubbard
Alex Hall
So all in all, those picks didn't really get us much - if you consistently miss with your top three picks, you're not likely to build a winning team.

Rogers played well here for a time. In fact he made the Pro Bowl as a Brown in 2008.

Fair enough, as I say, I don't know enough about the players except those who've gone down in browns folk lore. So a pro-bowler and athyba rubin, is actually a decent haul, perhaps a C is a bit harsh. Going back to the philosophy on the other thread of 'draft picks are assets' then perhaps this draft wasn't so bad for us.

OK, make it a C+.
It is difficult to know what those "assets" may be otherwise used for if not for players drafted in that particular year....trade bait or whatever. We know our team and what we got from our "assets", but we don't know how other teams may have utilized theirs if not for regular draft picks.

So basically it's all fairly meaningless anyway?

Beau Bell was a total bust. However, if we don't make the trade for Quinn- & I was against it FWIW, We get Sidney Rice instead, and the first rounder we gave Dallas in 2008 becomes Felix Jones, Rashard Mandenhall, or Chris Johnson. As Skeptical has said, just one of many total draft screw ups I've documented over the years, and the reason the Browns have sucked swamp water since 1999.

Well, they do have to hydrate.

You're calling the draft a C+? Where we snagged Shaun Rogers for two years, then spent the pick on Quinn, effectively handcuffing us for the next 3 years. And every other pick never amounted to anything? 2008 draft gets a big fat F. Literally, I don't think it could've gone any worse. How on earth is that an average draft?
/edit
On second thought, we get bumped up to a D- for adding Rubin.

Considering that both the Steelers and Ravens have absolutely zero left from their drafts of the same year....and they had a full complement of picks where the Browns first pick was in the fourth round, I think C+ is pretty fair.
I did this for just the AFCN, but it would be interesting to see how it has worked out for all 32 teams.

ON NFL Network they had a panel discuss draft grades for the AFC North and the Browns got a C+. The other three division teams did better, of course. Browns are always behind the eight ball. Lots of pressure on Lombardi to have a great draft next year. I won't hold my breath. Tajh Boyd as Browns QB if they can't get Bridgewater? Boyd is cast from the same mold as Jason Campbell, a fine player but can he be an above average signal caller in the NFL? Not so sure about that. Bridgewater, if he stays healthy, has future all pro written all over him.

We are talking about the 2008 draft, not 2013. Maybe you can find what those "experts" say about this draft 5 years from now.
