Browns To Win Conference Next Year?

Slaughter's appeal is likely for Horton's 2-3-6. He likes to run 3 safeties and have one play up at backer, something Slaughter did a lot of at ND.
Oh, isn't it great. We don't really have any good safeties but let'suse three of them on defense???!!! Sluaghter is aptly named -- fast receivers will slaughter him on deep pass routes. That's if Salughter can stay healthy which is a question mark in itself. Didn't anybody notice how slow Notre Dame players were against an SEC team? Shouldn't that tell you something???!!! And yet we take Slaughter over Bacari Rambo, who made firstteam all america in 2011 while playing in the SEC. One can only conclude that one has to have an IQ under 80 to be an NFLGM or coach.
-
Those guys were 4th round picks for a reason.
Who knows how Gibson or Slaughter will play, but they are no scrubs, and Slaughter might even turn out to be a steal.
And maybe Rambo is good, but he had some issues, and the FO decided it would be better to take the Steeler's next years third and stick it out this year with what we got.
Regardless, I'm excited for this year based off of our current scheme and talent. This team is constantly on the up rise now thanks to a solid GM in Heckert(picked up by Broncos) and a smart FO with a plan, for a superbowl, because it seems Browns fans just want playoffs, and the irony sets in as I recall my username.
This FO sees the bigger picture, they know what it takes to bring Cleveland what it so desperately needs.
In 2 years, the Browns will be an elite NFL team.
Everyone needs to realize this.
The view of most people: The Browns are the worst team in their division because they draft more poorly than their division competitors, and it was the same thing again this year. Case closed. Until the Browns get a GM who knows what he is doing instead of this long line of nitwits, the team will never be competitive for a playoff spot.
Oh, wasn't it smart for a team with so many holes to fill to draft away valuable 4th and 5th round picks that other teams jumped at, giving the Browns a minor chance next year to use those picks to try and get Teddy Twatwater. Do you think any bad team with a chance to draft Bridgewater, if he has a great 2013 season, will trade with the Browns? It'll be a repeat of the Robert Griffin fiasco and Lombardi will probably try to hunt down Craig Powell and "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell so he can re-draft them.

I've truly said all I have to say so if you think were gonna suck next year then so be it.

Whichever way you look at it, not many teams have improved their roster as much as the Browns in the last two seasons. Whether you agree with moving up to take TRich at 3 the fact is before drafting him they had a few good players on the D and O lines, and Haden. After that there wasn't much to get excited about.
Since then theyve added a potential top RB, WRs who actually give the opposition something to worry about, and now a pass rush. Added to this, (hopefully) better coaches, setting up the team to the players, especially weeden's, strengths and things are on the up.
Obviously the team isn't there yet and I'd have liked them to try harder in FA to strengthen the back line by maybe gambling on paying Grimes but they have a policy and they are sticking to it. There's definately more reason to be positive than negative about next season and beyond than there has been in a while.

See, why pay big bucks when you can get solid gems in the 3rd and 4th?
The rookies play and grow for a much better value then FAs.
If we pay big bucks on free agents then how will afford to bring back guys like Haden and Ward when there contract runs out?
Do you guys want to lose the players that the Browns started from the bottom with?
Build through the draft.
-
I think they had the cap space to do both, signing Grimes or another DB wouldn't have broken the bank, however like I said, they have a policy in place and are sticking to it. I don't have a problem with that, things are moving in the right direction, it might just take another draft to add depth in certain positions.

Pressured quarterbacks make bad decisions.
Why do you think Nnamdi was so "Shut down" for the Raiders, then falls off in a passing division(No disrespect, he has aged too) Eagles don't have a big pass rush either.
They've been like us, pass-rushless: why throw at Nnamdi Asomugha when you KNOW you have time to dissect the defense?
And the same goes at QB for Matt Cassel: Did "good" behind that Pats O-Line and scheme, goes to KC... and sucks.
-
I agree. Before FA, pass rush was the number one need, I never said it wasn't. What I said was we are still potentially light at the back and could have addressed this ASWELL without getting into cap trouble.
-
The pass rush alone(Given there will be a pass rush, which i obviously believe in) will allow the whole secondary to shine.
And we are not horrific at FS, we have an experienced 2nd year player in Gibson. He's not "good" or "great", but he did his job.
Like management said, we won't fill all the needs this year: with what pick were we gonna use on a safety? That 4th rounder? So you think a 4th round grade safety is gonna help us?
C'mon man.
No, the pass rush alone won't allow the secondary to shine. Itakes 11 good players to have a good defense, not seven. Gipson "experienced" with only a few games starting behind him? And what about talent level? If experience is all that counted, Woodson would have been the first FA signed, but he's old now and not nearly as quick and nimble as he used to be. How much talent Gipson has remains to be seen. But even if he is close to average at free safety, if he gets hurt there is absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing, to replace him! It'll be a disaster and a nightmare for Browns fans. And Haden or McFadden get hurt, we replace them with Owens or Barnes!? What a laugher that is! Re the Browns big pass rush, smart QBs and offensive coordinators wil roll out their QBs and quickly find receivers so open it'll be like they are on a deserted prarie out west.

Again, and again and again. All you guys are doing is substituting YOUR opinions about the quality of the talent in this secondary (and the entire team) for that of the actual guys running the team.
But, consider this: maybe THEY are right, and you and TC et al may be wrong. Maybe Lombardi and Banner like the potential of McFadden and Slaughter (and Owen and Barnes) over that of Rambo, Thomas et al whom yinz wanted them to take. I am not saying that they ARE right and that you are wrong....but I am saying that I see NO reason to accept YOUR opinion over that of theirs.
You can second guess them, sure...and I do....but your absolutism is overly arrogant.
I mean, this is like picking cantalopes out of a basket at a grocery store. Those guys just liked different cantalope than you did.
But only time will tell which has picked the sweeter melon, nay?

T.J. Ward and Tashaun Gipson are pretty talented safeties.
And Slaughter didn't play in the BCS Championship Game when ND was "slow" against the SEC. Slaughter is a good football player. If he recovers from the achilles -- prepare the crow. I wanted Rambo as much as the next guy, but they drafted Slaughter with the idea Gipson and Ward would be the starters (IMO).
Gipson is so good he wasn't even drafted. C'mon, he's not a premier ball player. Would have loved to see Slaughter try to catch some of the Bama wideouts in the title game. Ward makes a big splash hitting people but he couldn't cover his mother if she went out for a pass.
Browns' secondary is very weak, the team's glaring achilles heel t hat will cause them to lose 3-4 games this season, but this so called "enlightened" new leadership team must think they are great! It sure makes the work of opposing QBs, receivers and offensive coordinators a lot easier! Same old stupid Browns. The farce continues on the shores of Lake Erie and I'm convinced it's the Berea water system that dumbs down seemingly bright people and makes them inept at evaluating football talent.

Owens and Barnes!!! Just look at their past record!! They were considered low achievers by former teams yet we sign them and will have to play them due to lack of quality depth in the secondary! It truly is beyond belif that the bunch of morons in Brea didn't use that 4th or 5th pick to add some quality secondary depth. And, yes, there was quality available in those rounds. That CB Webb, from William and Mary, is going to be a starter in the NFL.

There are guys in the Hall of Fame who were not drafted. Do the names Dick Night Train Lane/Willie Wood/Willie Brown/Emmit Thomas/Emlen Tunnell/Jack Butler sound familiar?
All defensive backs who went undrafted.
You place too much emphasis on status, not on talent.
Gipson can play, fairly well.

They acquired 5 new names in the DB. Owens/Barnes/McFadden etc.
Didn't you like these names?
And who cares if you didn't. You are just another dumbass with a keyboard.
And, your bitching is getting old.
I suggest you do something about it.
The Browns may still be having tryouts in Berea.
Why don't you head up there....and ask for a tryout.

When you get hired on as the Browns GM, you can make those decisions.
The deal is done. Live with it.
Or, find that bridge.

Just an fYI: Barnes was let go yesterday. He stinks and why the Browns signed him is beyond me. The Browns, once again, may have the worst depth in the secondary of any team in pro football. For my money, it's inconscionable and just plain stupid that Lombardi and Banner didn't do more to strengthen that very week secondary that will lose a lot of games for the Browns this coming season. What an embarrassment to have a secondary that bad!

Isn't that a good sign?
Ourlads has Bad Ass Emosi backing up Haden on one side and Skrine and Owens backing up McFadden on the other. Those three can compete for covering the slot. Then you figure they want to look at Tevin Wade and Kendrick Adams ... there's no need for another vet clogging things up.
I really think Horton knows what kind of defensive backfield he wants.

Maybe they let him go because they obviously think they have found people who are better....and that should make you feel better.
They obviously believe they have upgraded the position....and that is precisely what you want.
(or is it really that you just want them to do what you think they should do and not what they think they should do because you have been the architect of building several Super Bowl caliber teams in the past.

Are you a plant here by Lombardi and Browns management? How any objective fan can rah rah this horrific secondary, which Terry Pluto of the PD describes as "scary," and I agree, is beyond me. If you are not going to put a pro football competitive worthy secondary on the field this season, why not just cancel the Browns season and have everybody come back in 2014, the year Lombardi and Banner really want to begin competing. This secondary is a joke and an insult to all the thousands of season ticket holders who shelled out big bucks to see a quality product and all they'll see is a lot of passes for TDs by oppsoing QBs because the secondary stinks with a capital S!

I get the fucking point....you think the secondary isn't as good as it should be. Neither do I....but I have to live with it so I am not going to whine and cry about it for the rest of my life.

We've spent at #1, a #2 and #3 on this secondary. Two of the starters are at, or very near, Pro Bowl level. The late round picks and free agents that we have been grooming have actually performed better than expected overall, IMO. Skrine can play the slot, Hagg has some game, Gipson looked like a nice surprise last year and Bademosi hung in there well when called upon late in the season.
We spent our first two draft picks on our pass defense, a pass rusher and a potential starting corner. We signed the top pass rushing free agent linebacker available, added more depth all over the defense and brought in the hottest DC available, who is a former defensive back whose scheme is intended to create havoc up front so the secondary can make plays.
Chill the fuck out. Terry Pluto is scared easily. Women probably scare him.
