Millenial Matters

  • You could say that a New Age of Man began with the new Millenium which started in 2000 (the Age of Aquarius?) It could also be said that that year began a new age of football. Well, it didn't really, but, nonetheless for this I am just going back to the year 2000 for some various statistical stuff.

I will start here by documenting which NFL teams have made the most playoff appearances since 2000.

Here are the numbers each of the 32 NFL teams has made postseason play since then:

    Colts: 12

    Patriots: 10

    Ravens: 10

    Packers: 9

    Eagles: 9

    Steelers: 9

    Giants: 7

    Seahawks: 7

    Broncos: 6

    Falcons: 6

    Titans: 6

    Jets: 6

    Saints: 5

    Bucs: 5

    Chargers: 5

    Vikings: 5

    Bengals: 4

    49ers: 4

    Dolphins: 4

    Rams: 4

    Bears: 4

    Cowboys: 4

    Redskins: 3

    Raiders: 3

    Chiefs: 3

    Panthers: 3

    Cardinals: 3

    Texans: 2

    Jaguars: 2

    Browns: 1

    Lions: 1

    Bills: 0

  • and

  • Also, you have heard that statistic that for every year in like forever at least 5 new teams make the playoffs. Well that was true for this new millenium up until last year:

Teams that were in 2000 playoffs that failed to make it back in 2001: Colts, Broncos, Titans, Saints, Vikings, Giants.

2001 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2002: Ravens, Dolphins, Pats, Rams, Bears

2002 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2003: Jets, Steelers, Browns, Raiders, Falcons, Giants, 49ers, Bucs

2003 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2004: Titans, Ravens, Chiefs, Panthers, Cowboys

2004 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2005: Jets, Chargers, Rams, Vikings, Packers, Falcons, Eagles

2005 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2006: Jags, Steelers, Bengals, Broncos, Redskins, Bucs, Panthers, Giants

2006 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2007: Chiefs, Jets, Ravens, Eagles, Saints, Bears

2007 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2008: Jags, Pats, Seahawks, Redskins, Bucs, Packers, Cowboys

2008 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2009: Dolphins, Titans, Steelers, Falcons, Vikings, Panthers, Giants

2009 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2010: Bengals, Chargers, Cowboys, Cardinals, Vikings

2010 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2011: Jets, Colts, Chiefs, Pats, Seahawks, Eagles, Bears

2011 playoff teams that failed to make it in 2012: Steelers, Saints, Lions, Giants

Last year, with just these 4 teams failing to return marked the first time in like 15 years that happened.

  • Since just 2000 the Super Bowl standings look like this:

    Patriots Won 3 Lost 2

    Steelers Won 2 Lost 1

    Ravens Won 2 Lost 0

    Colts Won 1 Lost 1

    Saints Won 1 Lost 0

    Packers Won 1 Lost 0

    Bucs Won 1 Lost 0

    49ers 0-1

    Bears 0-1

    Cards 0-1

    Seahawks 0-1

    Eagles 0-1

    Panthers 0-1

    Raiders 0-1

    Rams 0-1

  • Here are the records of various teams in Conference Championship Games:

    Steelers: 3-2

    Ravens: 2-2

    Colts: 2-1

    Titans: 0-1

    Broncos: 0-1

    Chargers: 0-1

    Jets: 0-2

    Vikings: 0-2

    Falcons: 0-2

Ten teams have not appeared in a Conference Title game: Dolphins, Bills, Browns, Bengals, Jaguars, Texans, Chiefs, Cowboys, Redskins, Lions.

  • whats crazy is the that teh Bills have not made the playoffs this whole time, shit if the Browns made the playoffs 1 year you would think that the Bills would have

Browns should have won that playoff game vs. Pittsburgh. It's a shame the Browns didn't make the playoffs during their 10-6 campaign a few years back.

Would you prefer heights/weights/40 times/vertical leaps stats of Browns UDFAs?

That is because the Colts in essence purposely tanked a game which, if they had won, would have put the Browns in the playoffs.

That said, the Browns didn't take care of their own business due to DA throwing what? 4-5 ints. vs. the Bengals?

Along those lines and keeping with the thread, the following teams have had double digit wins (10 or more) and failed to make the postseason since 2000:

    2003 Dolphins

    2005 Chiefs

    2007 Browns

    2008 Pats (11-5)

    2010 Giants

    2010 Buccaneers

    2012 Bears

So those Browns were not alone.

  • More Millenial Matters. I document here which cities have won titles in the various sports since 2000:

Boston/NE: Titles in Football , baseball, basketball, hockey

NY/NJ: Titles in Football(Giants), Baseball(Yankees), Hockey (NJ Devils)

LA/Anaheim: Titles in Baseball (Angels), Basketball(Lakers), Hockey(Ducks and Kings)

Detroit: Titles in Basketball and Hockey

Tampa: Titles in Football and Hockey

Pittsburgh: Titles in Football and Hockey

Chicago: Titles in Baseball (White Sox) and Hockey

Miami: Titles in Basketball and Baseball

St. Louis: Title in Baseball (but if you include the 1999 season Super Bowl, played in 2000, they won in both sports)

    Philadelphia: Title in Baseball

    Denver: Hockey

    San Antonio: Basketball

    Raleigh: Hockey

    Indianapolis: Football

    New Orleans: Football

    Green Bay: Football

    SF/SJ/Oak: Baseball

  • I am one to advocate for new blood to win titles....but in this June title season in the NBA and NHL, there is no new blood. It seems like in the rest of America, the fat cats just get fatter. Cities potentially in line for a title this year are the same cities that have been winning:

Miami and San Antonio in basketball

Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and LA in Hockey

  • To further emphasize the fat cat point, here are the total titles won in the 2000 Millenium by team from various cities:

    LA/Anaheim 8 titles

    Boston/NE 7 titles

    NY/NJ 6 titles

    Miami 3 titles

    Pittsburgh 3 titles

    Detroit 3 titles

    San Antonio 3 titles

    SF/SJ/Oak 2 titles

    Baltimore 2 titles

St. Louis 2 titles (3 if you include Rams SB win in 1999 season, won in 2000)

    Chicago 2 titles

    Tampa 2 titles

Dallas, Green Bay, New Orleans, Philly, Indy, Raleigh, Phoenix, Denver...one title each

  • I'll give you credit Gip, you come up with some pretty interesting topics and tidbits.

  • Cleveland ... 0-30 for the seventies ... 0-30 for the eighties ... 0-27 for the nineties ... 0-30 for the 00's ... 0-10 for the 10's ... we're kind due, aren't we?

Actually, it is more than that. In the 70s it was 0-32...as the NHL Cleveland Barons were here for 2 seasons before losing their identity with a merger with the Minnesota North Stars.

Maybe I am a little harsh. Since 2000 Raleigh won the only title in that cities history...same with Phoenix, same with New Orleans...and Tampa's 2 titles were that cities first ever. And the Colts title was the only title in Indy's history since a few ABA titles won by the Pacers in the 70s. And San Antonio's titles continued a string that started just in 1999 with the Spurs first title.
