Norv Turner: A Competent Browns Oc, For Once
-
Agreed
-
When fans knew what the Browns offense would be running, you bet the defense they were playing did.
Now, I'm looking forward to it all coming together.

I occasionally wonder how you'd fare with a 'random play generator' deciding what you call for each play. Probably better than Shurmur

-
I'm not sure who sucks more at playcalling: Shurmur or Bollman
-
it was on espn today (i know) that turner was quoted as saying the browns offensive scheme under his watch will be to 'attack'.
well i guess that's better than saying the offense will 'lay down' or 'be simple' or 'be the same as it was when i coached san diego'.
glad he really put himself out there as a coach.
phew. had me going there for a second.

The main reason the Browns will have a much better offense in 2013 will be the playcalling.
Norv has produced at the helm of teams with much less talent at OL and QB than the 2013 Browns.. and took Aikman to 2 of his 3 Super Bowls.
An offense that can control the ball keeps the defense fresher -- by limiting the plays the defense has to face. Norv won't just improve Weeden's stats, he'll also allow the defense to have better overall stats.

Getting Norv Turner as OC is a real coup. Turner is a lot better than Shurmur in my view.

It's great to say you are going to "attack" but you have to execute on that. Can Weeden get the ball downfield quickly and can the receivers run better routes than they did in 2012?
If the pieces don't mesh properly, and Weeden's accuracy and speed of delivery don't improve, this "attack" offense could fall flat on its face and the interceptions will occur in bunches. Hopefully that won't happen.

I'll say this: The first step to attacking on offense is to commit to it. Call the play. Encourage the quarterback to take it downtown, take his shots.
It is meaningful, as defined in 2013: Good teams are being extremely aggressive with the pass early in games, taking on a little risk in return for the reward... which is an early lead that allows you to unleash multiple pass rushers. Which, as Banner put it, creates a bigger lead. And then you can try to get some value out of the RB you took 3rd overall.
DOH!

We'll learn very quickly this season if Weeden can read coverage better. Many experts do believe Weeden will betterwith this new offense, including Charley Casserly, who said that today on NFL Network. Casserly noted it will be easier for Weeden becasue Turner's offense gets a lot of receivers over the middle for easy throws by the QB.
But as I understand it, there's a lot of accurate route running that must be done as the QB gets rid of the ball quicly and throws to a spot the receiver must be at. This kind of offense may have been a disaster last year because the playmakers were all so inexperienced; the timing might be right to use it this year.

Norv Turner is a breath of fresh air compared to the horrific offensive "geniuses" we've had in recent years. In fact, Turner is the best OC this team has had since Bruce Arians. But while some think Jordan Cameron will be up to the task as a key receiver inthe new offense, I remain skeptical. He's got to stay healthy first.
