Sure, the Browns had maybe three of them.

    Interesting list.

The fact that these guys ranked Tim Couch a bigger bust than Akili Smith just shows what dumbasses they were. Tim Couch took a team that was just paper to the playoffs in 4 years and started nearly every game in those 4 years. Akili Smith MAY have started all of 3 games in his career and won only one game as a starter.

Plus, they have Craig Powell in there as a bigger bust than the likes of Mike Junkin and Clifford Charlton. Sorry assholes, as big a bust as Powell was, he was a late first round pick. Junkin and Charlton were both top ten picks.

Also, clearly this must be an old, old article. They don't even have Jamarcus Russell listed. He would take the top spot.

I agree with Gipper that Smith should be much higher than Couch, maybe in the top 10. In fact, I don't think Couch deserves to be on the list. To this day I maintain Couch would have been a decent NFL QB if he hadn't played behind such a horrible OL and had, overalll, such a bad supporting cast. The guy was game, but got beat up too badly to perform at a quality level. Today Couch is a very good TV analyst on SEC football games. He's made a nice success for himself despite all of his playing woes -- he's also married to a former Playmate and has a couple of kids.

I also agree with Gipper about Charlton, disagree with him re Craig Powell, who I don't think even made it out of training camp his rookie year, but I could be wrong on that.

Other former Browns more deserving than Couch include WR Steve Holden (remember him, the "savior") and "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell. Certainly, Lombardi's hand is over some of these names.

I think it was Marty Schottenheimer who pushed to draft Junkin. Schottenheimer stank as a coach. If a guy like Shanahan or Harbaugh had been coaching the mid 80s Browns, and the tremendous amount of talent they had on those teams thanks to a GM who picked up some great people off the old WFL rosters, they definitely would have been to the Super Bowl at least once. Schottenheimer is one of the worst post-season coaches of all time, in my opinion. NFL Network has a special on the 10 best teams never to make the Super Bowl, and the Browns of the Kosar era are high on that list, as they should be.

No, Craig Powell did make the team for at least one year, which I think was 1995. In fact, he was one of the players whose contract was assigned to the new Ravens franchise. What I don't know is if he was a Bill Belichick special....or perhaps it was Lombardi who made this pick?

Whoever it was, I don't know if that same person was making picks the following year for the Ravens.....if so, they did a better job. Instead of picking a LB of Powell's quality, they picked Ray Lewis.

Other former Browns more deserving than Couch include WR Steve Holden (remember him, the "savior") and "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell. Certainly, Lombardi's hand is over some of these names.

I don't think so, but I am not sure. Who was it that made the famous "Mad Dog in a Meat Market" comment? It was not Marty.

          Schottenheimer stank as a coach.

No, he was a very good coach. You don't win 200 games in the NFL unless you are. He just wan't quite "championship caliber".

If a guy like Shanahan or Harbaugh had been coaching the mid 80s Browns, and the tremendous amount of talent they had on those teams thanks to a GM who picked up some great people off the old WFL rosters

          You mean USFL?

Again, no, he wasn't one of the worst....he just wasn't one of the best. His teams did make conference title games at least 3-4 times. He just couldn't climb that hump.

NFL Network has a special on the 10 best teams never to make the Super Bowl, and the Browns of the Kosar era are high on that list, as they should be.

That is an interesting question. I think I will use it in my survey thread.

If you recall, Craig Powell was the result of an ill-prepared Lombardi and Belihick who were 100% sure they would be in position to draft Kyle Brady, the TE from Penn State. The Jets took Brady like two picks before Cleveland, and the Cleveland draft room melted into chaos. As I remember, a certain nose tackle from the U. of Miami named Sapp was still on the board and the Browns could have drafted him.

Not only that, but if they had wanted an LB, Derrick Brooks could have been taken as well. He was chosen 2 slots ahead of where Powell was chosen. And he may end up being chosen coming up for the HOF in his first year of eligibility.

Again, I don't know if it was Belichick or Lombardi who was the prime mover in those moves. I am more than willing to assess equal blame.

Aside from Powell, that 1995 draft netted for the Browns these beauties:

                Mike Frederick

                Eric Zeier

                Tau Papua

                Mike Miller

                AC Tellison

None of whose NFL careers amounted to a cabbage fart.

How a guy that was responsible for such a draft ever got another job in the NFL, I don't know. But, that same guy is now our GM.

People actually got excited, initially, when the tiny Eric Zeier took the helm at QB. Some called him the next Brian Sipe!

I fucking hate when people say Couch is a bust. He got sacked 70 times for a loss average of -25 yards a game, what the fuck do you expect when you have the shittiest line ever.

Luck is Tim Couch. Big, Dumb Goofy, slow thinking QB - Ghoolie, 2-28-12

Aside from Powell, that 1995 draft netted for the Browns these beauties:

                      Mike Frederick

                      Eric Zeier

                      Tau Papua

                      Mike Miller

                      AC Tellison

None of whose NFL careers amounted to a cabbage fart.

How a guy that was responsible for such a draft ever got another job in the NFL, I don't know. But, that same guy is now our GM.

I think Mingo has an uphill battle to toughen himself up to be able to deal with blockers at the NFL level -- he even had trouble with that in the SEC -- but I think with his pure athletic ability, smarts and focused determination he has a chance to develop into a force over time. I'll be surprised, though, if we see a lot from Mingo his rookie season.

I'd say prepare to be surprised. I think Mingo will be a bit of a name player on the defense,

                          and over time, watch out.

People are very skeptical about Mingo and he is on many an expert's potential bust list. I'm rooting for the guy as, personally, I really like his attitude and demeanor. It's refreshing.

You sang the praises of Charles Haley in another thread. To me, Haley seems a bit of a role model for Mingo. They seem to be of similar size and build. So, that would be alright.
