NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported last week that the Green Bay Packers were prepared to cut ties with linebacker Desmond Bishop after failing to find a trade partner.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Ty Dunne confirmed Monday that Bishop will be officially released by the Packers.

Bishop was one of the few defensive bright spots as the leading tackler in 2011 before losing the 2012 season to a ruptured right hamstring. The Packers once thought highly enough of Bishop to give him a four-year, $19 million contract, but now they now turning over the position to Brad Jones after he exceeded expectations in run support and pass coverage last season.

Still recovering from hamstring surgery, Bishop was limited to side work during the Packers' recent minicamp. Although he expects to get the green light for training camp, the injury might have played a role in his release.

It will be interesting to see if Bishop lands on his feet in Kansas City or Oakland. Chiefs general manager John Dorsey and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie were right-hand men to Packers general manager Ted Thompson's before landing with their new teams.

Kansas City's 3-4 defense is the better scheme fit between the two teams. Dorsey surely realizes a healthy Bishop would be an upgrade on Akeem Jordan and fourth-round pick Nico Johnson next to Derrick Johnson.

    Lets go get another linebacker

  • I should hope that the Browns scouting department will always take a look at whomever hits the waiver/cut wire in the possiblity that they could pick up someone that could improve this team.

Whether this guy does that, I don't know...but he should be considered...and rejected or accepted depending on their evaluation of him.

  • I like Bishop a ton if he's healthy... but he is 29 and the Browns really seem high on Craig Robertson. Not sure if they want to sit the youngster and get older at the same time. Doesn't sound like the way they're building the team.

  • That's what I was thinking. Hasn't Craig show at least enough to get some good snaps, I don't see how signing him wouldn't be good for depth though

  • LOL love this board every time someone gets cut, everyone is like "Hey lets go get this guy" I wonder if other fans of other teams get pumped when we cut a punter or kicker. I am sure the pats fans want all Browns players that are cut...LOL

FYI- There is a reason they are cut, plus KNOWBODY WANTED TO TRADE FOR HIM. Shit you could have offered the Packers a upper deck ticket to a pre-season game and they would have took it for the guy

I think Horton sees Robertson as a potential full-time three-down starting ILB because of his quicks. As a rookie last year, he was third on the team in tackles. Bishop won't sign anywhere to be a backup.

  • Only meaningful signing that makes sense to me is a corner with size. Body of the roster could churn a little but that's the one spot in the actual rotation I could see as "needy." I'm optimistic about Skrine, Owens, and McFadden but they're all short-ish.

  • Wouldn't hurt to sign this guy. Problem is, right now he's injured so we don't want to rush into it. If Robertson, Fort, Carder don't look up to snuff with pads on, then you take a chance on a guy like this to either push the competetion or come in and start b/c he is supposed to be ready for training camp. Odds are though, somebody else will jump on him before camps open up.

Give them a break... it's a slow time of the year for Browns talk... everything is a headline

Plus, the only reason nobody traded for him is because he's injured. One's he's close to returning, there will be a few teams wanting this guy... he was a starting ILB in a 3-4 D and played well.

  • Bishop's only a year older than the Browns' recent high-priced FA additions. Sure, he comes with more injury risk but also would be cheaper -- I'm guessing he'll sign a one year prove-it deal -- and could provide big help at a position that wasn't addressed in the offseason.

Robertson looks like a player, but he's excelled primarily on passing downs. For now, he may be better off as the first guy off the bench/nickel sub. And if D'Qwell goes down, what else do you have there? Depth could become a major issue if, as Pluto indicated, JMJ's on the outs.

  • Howdy, Mikey.

Another thing worth noting: adding Bishop also could serve as a hedge in case DQJ doesn't thrive in Horton's 3-4. But with the talented beef in front of him, I think he will.

Looking good Eric. Lose the mustache though.
