The Greatest Team, Sim Play

The Browns Board

  • Mark O hooked up to this whatifsports site where you could take any two teams (almost) in history and play them off against each other. Thus, I took the bracket I had from my other thread and played a best of 5 series...2 home 2 away, to decide who won each matchup. (When a team reached 3 wins I basically stopped even if 5 games were not played). There were some surprising results. Here are the results from the first round.:

    Game 1

    2007 Pats defeat 2004 Pats

    Game 2

1998 Broncos defeat the 1992 Cowboys

    Game 3

    1991 Redskins defeat 1989 49ers

    Game 4

    1976 Raiders defeat the 19 86 Giants

    Game 5

1962 Packers defeat the 1963 Bears

    Game 6

1958 Colts defeat the 1953 Lions

    Game 7

1949 Eagles defeat the 1950 Browns (see what I mean?)

    Game 8

1942 Redskins defeat the 1941 Bears

  • Sim play Round 2. Since there were differences in the results in the sim play from those of the voting, I had to do some rematches. Recall, I gave 8 teams byes in the first round. Also note, the Sim play would not let me go back to the 1929 Packers for some reason, so I replace that Packer team with the 1999 St. Louis Rams

    Results:

    Game 9

    2007 Patriots defeat 1984 49ers

    Game 10

1998 Broncos defeat 1972 Dolphins (yep)

    Game 11

    1991 Redskins defeat the 1989 49ers

    Game 12

1966 Packers defeat the 1976 Raiders

    Game 13

1962 Packers defeat the 1978 Steelers

    Game 14

1985 Bears defeat the 1958 Colts

    Game 15

1999 Rams defeat the 1949 Eagles

    Game 16

    1948 Browns defeat 1942 Redskins

  • Sim Play Round 3:

    Game 17

1962 Packers defeat the 1985 Bears

    Game 18

1998 Broncos defeat the 2007 Patriots

    Game 19

1999 Rams defeat the 1991 Redskins

    Game 20

1948 Browns defeat the 1966 Packers

  • Semifinal round:

1999 Rams defeat the 1998 Broncos

1948 Browns defeat the 1962 Packers

  • Championship Game:

    Unfortunately, the Browns fall short.

1999 Rams defeat the 1948 Cleveland Browns

So, by virtue of this, the 1999 St. Louis Rams stake their claim as the Greatest Team in NFL history!

I guess there is some legitimacy to this. Those Rams are one of the highest scoring teams in history.....and they have the largest point differential average of any team in the "Super Bowl era".

But, you know, in my original class of the best 24 teams in history, I didn't even include them.

  • I played the 1980 Browns against 1980 Eagles in the SB that may have been had red right 88 not happened ... Eagles won 4 out of 5.

I played the 1986 Browns against 1986 Giants in the SB that may have been had we stopped "the drive" .... Giants won 3 out of 5.

I played the 1987 Browns against 1987 Redskins in the SB that may have been had Byner not fumbled ... Redskins won 4 out of 5.

Truth is, we simply have never been The Best Team of any year in the Super Bowl era ... yet.

  • Yea, but some anomalies can happen in this sim play. E.g. we know that when the defending champ Eagles came up against the 1950 Browns, the Browns smashed them. This computer sim gave the Eagles the edge....but I think, in reality, if those teams played 10 times....the Browns win 7-8 out of 10.

The sim had the '89 49ers going out in the first round. And the '84 49ers going out in the second round.

The '72 Dolphins also go out in the second round. (so...Z...the computer too didn't think they were unbeatable)

and the '85 Bears go out in the quarter finals.

Most would think that those things shouldn't/wouldn't happen. But, maybe, in fact they could. After all....the team that would no doubt have been considered THE greatest of all time: the 2007 Patriots......lost.

  • And here, the Dolphins of '72, have been attention seeking suckasses for over 40 years, and now just want more attention:
