Holders ... Is there a reason...
-
...why the place-holder for kicks isn't the 2nd/3rd string QB? I mean, having, as we did last year for example, the punter holding the kick means that if you want to go for 2-points, you're basically signalling it the moment the QB comes on. However, if you have the backup QB as the regular holder then you can put some of the better blocking receivers on special teams and have option of going for a 2PC every time. Greg little would be a prime candidate, given his excellent blocking skills, to double as a part time special teamer/2PC receiver.
In fact, you could even have a speedy runner who could just pick the ball up and run with it. someone like Cribbs would have been perfect, given his throwing/running ability.
Just a thought, I'm sure it's been thought of before

And also obviously the same logic applies to field goals...

Or, if your punter was also a backup QB......like when Tom "Two Point" Tupa played for the Browns you could have had the best of both of those worlds.
-
Or, just as well, how about not having a punter take up a separate roster position.
One of the best punters in Browns history was.....Gary Collins, with a 41.0 career punt average. In his best year he average over 46 yards a punt.
.....and, oh, by the way....he is also the Browns all time leader in TD catches as a passer.
That would be like having Greg Little be our punter....and our No. 1 or 2 recever.

I tried Googling this unsuccessfully, but it seems to me that there HAVE been a number of QB "holders" over the years. It does make great sense for not only trick plays but bad/fumbled snaps to put the ball in hands with some skills.
Can anyone come up with info on this?

I would bet the team has tried several people at the position, including a QB or two and gave the job to the person who catches the snap and places the ball the best.
I have watched a lot of Browns games and don't recall make fake kicks....though I was at the game where Tom Tupa faked and ran in the first 2 point conversion in NFL history. It was in Cincy.
I can't find any video of it.

Don Horn held for Cockroft when he was with us.
I think Phipps and Sipe did too when they were backups ... Back then it was pretty standard for backup qbs to hold.
Then punters took over jus t because of the dynamics of practice .... The kicker, punter and long snapper practice kicks while the real football players are doing their things
My favorite holder of all time was Nolan Cromwell of the Rams ... 80s. He was a pro bowl safety, but he was a former Nebraska quarterback, and he would take off on a bunch of trick plays.

Pagel play results in an overtime victory.
Any of you old-timers remember?
