  • The QB either has to get the fuck down or get out of bounds. End of story.

  • It's a bullshit punk move by gonzo. The Qb was giving himself up and then he crushes him. Punk James Harrison move. It's cool, this punk is trying to build a rep or something... keep your fucking head on a swivel little bitch ass Gonzo fuck. Bullseye on your back bitch. You think Lombardi won't be dialing up his connects to put a hit out on you to end your season after you wasted his boy Hoyer. What goes around comes around, bitch. LOL

Cheapshot. Should've been a flag... period

please explain how it was a cheapshot and should have been a flag. he didn't hit him helmet to helmet, he didnt hit him after he started sliding...

Seemed like Alonso launched himself just before Hoyer tried to slide.

are defenders not allowed to launch themselves at offensive players that aren't defenseless?

I agree, it was not an illegal hit. When a QB runs like Hoyer did he becomes a running back and loses the protection of the pocket. A RB is allowed to be hit in that fashion.

Even if it were illegal....it had nothing to do with the injury. The injury was caused by the way his legs got twisted under him, not by the hit to the head. If Alonso had hit him in the shoulder or chest that leg twist likely would have occurred anyway. No, Hoyer just didn't use proper "get down" technique and was primarily responsible for his own injury.

  • However you want to try and defend it it was out of line. So was gipson. Enjoy the next eight weeks of tuell because some dude had to crush your qb.

Gipson's hit on Emanueal was perfectly legal and clean. I think his fist pump had nothing to do with celebrating hurting a guy...but just with making a big stop.

  • At least the browns have championships. The bills lost four straight super bowls which is sort of akin to losing all your children in the civil war.

The Bills have also won two championships. Browns 8. Additional non Browns NEO teams 5 more.

  • I guess there is a bottom line to this: Browns QB goes out....but is replaced by the young veteran that all thought would be the starter this season anyway. Bills rookie 1st round QB goes out....is replaced by an undrafted FA rookie QB.

Sorry, but the Bill Front Office is foolish to have allowed that situation to happen. The Browns FO thought Weeden would be the QB....but also added veteran Jason Campbell and veteran Brian Hoyer as backups. If Weeden goes down...as he did, they had a quality backup to come in...be it Hoyer or Campbell. It was Hoyer who did well....and when he got the starting job...but got hurt, the original slated starter can now come back in and play (and we still have the veteran Campbell if needed).

The Bill FO WAS foolish to allow that situation to happen. Does any FO really count on their starting QB to play every game? We KNOW that won't happen.

The Browns will probably now pick up a fairly decent QB to take Hoyer's roster spot. The Bill ought to be looking for two.

You know the Pirates have won 2 World Series since the last time the Browns have won anything.

True. Nonetheless, they had 21 straight losing seasons.

    My bad

  • Hoyer was sliding and it was helmet to helmet. Bullshit. At least we got some payback.

At worst it was a glancing H2H hit, but it did not cause the injury. It was a clean play...

I thought the hit on Manuel was also uncalled for. And both our teams will end up hurt this year because of it.

Shoulder pad to thigh is now frowned upon? SMH... Again, clean hit...

If Hoyer hadn't tucked his left leg he would still be playing. It was far from a text book slide.

Tucking a leg was the way I was taught to slide feet first.

Bingo... that's it in a nutshell, Gip.

For once the proper way for Hoyer to have "gotten down" would have been a head first slide, but he was focused on the DB coming up and never saw Alonso coming...

    Yup...

  • I almost hate to say it... but Alonso's head was down before Hoyer started his slide. Was he trying to hit him in the head? No, because he didn't know his head was going to be that low. Was he leading with his helmet? Oh, yeah. Very much so. Did he know Hoyer already had the first down and was sideline bound (shouldn't really have slid)? Sure.

But he wasn't out yet so you can hit him... and are coached to do so.

Then He put his head down and you can even see his head thrust to the side to add a liitle extra into the helmet shot. He's a pro football player, he knows (knew) what he is doing. because he didn't know his head was going to be that low. Was he leading with his helmet? Oh, yeah. Very much so. With so many changes designed to protect the players and such an emphasis placed on quarterbacks I'm surprised its still legal to hit the qb outside of the pocket at all. In my mind there's no reason for a linebacker to crush the qb at all. He could have pushed him over or out of bounds. Instead he crushed the guy. Awesome. The Manuel hit was not as egregious but still probably was not necessary so close to the boundary of the field.

A lot of people will complain that you should still be allowed to suplex the qb on their heads like it was the 70s but its not. The league has changed dramatically and I expect in ten years' time Alonso would be suspended for that hit

  • Hoyer has no one to blame but himself for his injury. He should've gone out of bounds or slid earlier. You know that the Bills fans are saying the same about Manuel. He coulda, woulda, shoulda, but he didn't and he's out for the season. Let's move on.

  • Hoyer was speared with the defensive helmet.

That makes it an illegal hit, imho, regardless of Hoyer's goofy "slide" that got him injured.

Let's put it this way, does anybody think that if it had been the squeelers' Big Ugly Stupid Ben,

that the flag would not have been thrown? Or Peyton?

Yes, it would have. It's leading with the helmet. Helmet to helmet contact. I think there will be a fine.
