Aldon Smith Faces Felony Weapons Charges from House-Party Incident
Jeff Gross/Getty ImagesSan Francisco 49ers star linebacker Aldon Smith is facing three felony charges from the Santa Clara County District Attorney for possession of assault weapons, according to Tony Kovaleski of NBC Bay Area.
The team issued the following statement to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News:
The 49ers organization is aware of the recent developments with Aldon arising from an incident at his home in 2012. We recognize the serious nature of this situation, as does Aldon, and will continue to monitor it closely. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment. The charges are in connection to a 2012 house party at Smith’s residence in San Jose, Calif., that resulted in the 24-year-old All-Pro being stabbed and left two other guests wounded in a shooting.
Those two guests have filed civil lawsuits against Smith, claiming that he was “firing weapons and owning illegal firearms,” according to Kovaleski's report.
The charges couldn’t have come at a worse time, as Smith is currently on an indefinite leave of absence from the team after being arrested on Sept. 20 due to suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.
Smith voluntarily checked himself into a rehab facility on Sept. 22 and is currently on San Francisco’s non-football injury list.
The third-year player was off to another torrid start on the field this season, amassing 4.5 sacks and 18 combined tackles in just three games. Smith registered 19.5 sacks in 2012 and 14 in his rookie season.
While the lack of an elite pass-rusher like Smith has unquestionably hurt the 49ers' defensive attack, the team is 2-0 in his absence and 3-2 overall.
The 49ers host the 3-2 Arizona Cardinals in Week 6 as both teams fight for positioning in the NFC West.

Wait a minute, does Smith face actual criminal charges....or are these only "charges" in a civil complaint as is mentioned here?
If it is just a civil complaint it don't mean shit to his employability....but criminal matters is something else.
If his loss weakens the 49ers, fine. There are about 25-30 other NFL teams that I would have a preference for as far as winning a title.

It clearly states 3 felony charges.
