ABYSSMAL 1st and 3rd Down Defense

  • see our 3rd down defense sucks, I dont want to hear that our offense keeps putting our defense on the field, they need to step up and make the plays on 3rd down to get off their damn selves. stop giving up 5,6 yards every first down and that might be possible.

  • Not sure of the stats but it seemed a lot of 3rd downs were 5 or less. Hard to stop anything less than 7

and to take that one step further, we get beat on the same 3 step drop and throw at the sticks. Our CBs are nowhere to be found, it's like they're playing 10 yards back and playing passive prevent defense on 3rd and 5. WTF? Sick of getting beat everytime by the undeneath crap.

  • Hey you're right for once... The Browns D is currently ranked 11th in PPG given up, for the first time this season outside of the top 10. Even worse, our offense is ranked 24th

  • 3rd down defense comes down to edge rushing most of the time, and i've been saying the whole season that there's one guy who at least in that part of the game...isn't playing his contract. We need Jabaal back big time. And i'm gonna say it for years we should have pulled Werner out of Indy in the Richardson trade.

  • Our major defensive weakness continues to be no ability to cover a TE in the middle of the field. We seem to cover the sidelines decent, but between the numbers we aren't very good.

Also, I think the Lions used our aggressiveness against us in the 2nd half. Quick throws by Stafford, and being burned by Bush on the middle screen, seemed to put the Browns D on their heels.

  • So not taking into consideration of Time of Possession of avg field starting position. Because the browns suck in those categories and that is more on the offense and affects the defense negativly. Variables right??

  • THAT is the reason for the horrible defense, and yes, our defense IS horrible. We constantly give up 25/30 points, that is not a top 5,top 10 defense like we are being touted. It's a mirage.

We constantly give up 5, 6 yards on first down, constanly give opposing teams extremely easy 3rd down and managable downs which they often convert.

Detroit was a 33% 3rd down conversion team, against the the browns they were 58%.

There never was any pressure on the QB, and our guys dont press the WRs, we play constanly at least 6, 7, 8 yards off them, and so the Wrs go to the sticks, turn around and catch the ball for a 1st downs.

Enough is enough already, we are the same cleveland browns.

Weeden is just horrible and half of the problem himself.

So are you going to use stats or decry them? Only when they support your case? Very confusing...

We wore down vs. Detroit... pure and simple. Detroit was a step up in competition. They were the first team this year to establish a decent run game against us. Reggie Bush looks like he has been reborn. Their O-line handled our front 7 quite well... still waiting to hear Phil Taylor's name called. Mingo is still a couple seasons (and off-season weight training programs) away from being a 3-down OLB.

Yet I will maintain we are a very good defense. Great? No, not yet... but very good. More so with Sheard and Winn in the mix than with out them.

And, yes, Wheezy is not very good.

Yeah Mingo is getting pass from the Cleveland fan base but all the big runs the last couple weeks broke to his side because he crashed down on the run instead of keeping the edge. Kruger does that very well but his pass rushing this year stinks. Since I haven't seen any footage of him from last season in bal I don't know how he got his sacks, but here...he's got his bullrush and nothing else. His inside moves and his outside edge rush are "AWFUL". I mean that. He's so upright, he doesn't dig in and use any leverage when he goes outside. The tackles just bench press him out of his rush arc. We need Sheard back big time.

  • Ranked 11th giving up 20.8 points per game beats the shit out of where we have been in years past! Against Detroit I agree with Tour2ma, we wore down and really gave up the short stuff for 3rd down conversions. that needs to improve. Overall our defense is far from our problem.

Not sure I get the stats are for chumps thing either. Stats are pretty telling snapshots of what is going on

  • Like I've been saying, it's been going on all year, the defense is to blame for not getting off the field on 3rd down. I think the Chiefs converted 6-9 3rd downs in the first half and finished 10/19 - 52%

ur not completely wrong but you can't argue that today the defense was on the field basically the whole game. The offense had the ball for 5 minutes in the 1st half. No defense is going to be stellar on that. But our edges aren't consistently getting home for sure. We get better pressure up the middle than the edges, and that can't go on. Somebody has to teach Kruger how to get low on his outside/inside rush...he's so upright everytime he tries to go around that basically the tackle can take the play off and just lean on him right off the drop line to the qb.

Wow. Even CLE's defense is atrocious, by soju-boy's reckoning. Even though they've only ceded 22.5 ppg, including just 2 FGs to CIN's potent offense and 2 TD at the home of the defending SB Champs. Being ranked 6th in sacks, 9th in pass yd allowed and 12th in rush yd allowed is horrible too, apparently.

stats are for chumps, there's a lot of variables. The Browns don't pass the eye test--the truest test measurement of success there is.

Sorry but the eye test always comes first, and if the stats back up the eye test, then it is permissible.

ok billy. can you just pleez shut the fuck up now. we could have won the game and you'd still find something to bitch about.

  • I don't think you know what prevent defense is.

We blitzed on a third and 7 early in the game, how did that work out for us? Oh, a Jamaal Charles 30 yard screen?

You're a fucking idiot. If we'd have applied pressure every down you'd be bitching about that.

    Sit down, child.

  • we got decimated on screens yesterday. Absolutely obliterated. We always have gotten beat on screens and could never defend them, been going on for 15 years now.
