yeah I heard about it from my mother, she was appalled by it.

I simply told her that he was gay, then she said how can he be a preacher? I told her I dont know but to get used to this crap it will be coming full speed.

I am appalled by Lowery. An absolute travesty to end the "formal" inauguration ceremony with that level of hatred, & defiance. Or is the guy just a clueless bumbling old baffoon?

IMO, he took a complete shit on the amount of sacrifice that resulted in the National Holiday observed the previous day for the past 20+ years. He also took a shit on the monumental achievement (in terms of racial equality) for which he was supposedly honoring.

I never thought (especially after the Rev Wright fiasco) that I'd see anybody vetted less than Sarah Palin. Wow.

There was more than 1 person that signed off on the text of that speech. 😒

        edit:

I think this is the actual text, 'peen (as transcribed by/for the AP😞

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen.

I mean, just who exactly in the fcuk does this guy think he's giving a benediction for? And for what elected position? In which the position was won with an overwhelmingly, tsunami-sized majority? Did "white not embrace what was right" by electing Obama?

        ARRGHHH!!! What a stupid fcuk.

Yeah I heard part of it and thought it was foolish rhyming and out of place for such an honorable event. I didn't hear the "when white will embrace what is right" part.

Seriously that guy can go f*ck himself.

I posted this earlier but it was deleted, so here we go again.

you cant hide the Truth This Guy is a Rasict!!! And the words to his Prayer were approved by the new administration.

Wow, did this hit close to home for you guys or what?

He was prayer-riffing in some silly '60s style. Who took it seriously?

                Apparently just you guys.

Take it easy, fellas. He also talked about red and yellow people. He's obviously a racist to all colors of the crayon.

If this was the 60's, or the Grammy's, or MTV's shenanigans etc., then ok. Game on.

Wrong place, wrong time - for me.

Wasn't one of the subplots of this new administration to move past that crap? Or that we had moved past that crap, and this election was the result of our moving past it?

Plus, it was stupid and had no real relevance for the current racial climate. I might have tolerated a 60s style riffing, had he made the one-liners relevant. But, he pulled it from a previous speech of his. Poor judgment on whoever gave this the green light.

I think you went out a little too far on this.

Reverend Lowery is a respected civil rights icon. "Black will not be asked to get back" was an obvious reference to Rosa Parks.

And the tone was fairly light-hearted. The "white/right" thing didn't seem at all reproachful to me.

And I think this may reflect a broader disagreement, one that can be had more civilly.

Reverend Lowery, as a scion of the civil rights movements, sees today's civil rights activism as a continuation of the movement of the 60's - in a way, it's an attempt to fulfill what wasn't achieved then.

Others see it more as, "Well, we passed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts. So the movement achieved its aims." Which is somewhat accurate, but it doesn't reflect the continued social inequities that exist in American society. In response, they may say that emphasizing the problems that still exist implicitly denies the progress we've already made, which is also a fair point.

As with most things, the truth probably lies somewhere in between these two positions. But the Inauguration was set up in a manner that emphasized reconciliation and compromise. I mean, you can say that you disagree with Reverend Lowery, but do you think the liberals here agree with everything Pastor Rick Warren says and believes?

I think we can give Lowery and Obama a pass here.

You mean if a white guy would have told black people to be "right"?

Well, first of all, it wouldn't have rhymed, which would have been fitting, coming from a white guy.

Oh! Snap! A white stereotype followed closely by a black one! Damnnnn!

Okay, seriously, you gotta admit it's kind of funny that the ONLY (relatively) substantive thing being discussed about the inauguration is a silly reference from an old black preacher who was obviously there more for his symbolic value than for his words.

For the record, I did find his remarks silly and I noted the same things some of you are saying but I didn't take it that seriously and neither should you for this reason: that man saw things and was the victim of things that we as (I'm guessing) white men have ZERO clue about. He lived in an era where his skin color DEFINED him in many people's eyes and he had the COURAGE and TENACITY to fight against it for YEARS. And he was at the epicenter of a seminal event in American history, one HE helped bring about, and one that was built atop the blood, sweat and tears of MANY people of ALL colors.

And we're calling him names for a goofy rhyme that -- oh, by the way -- encouraged people to do RIGHT?

Perhaps we missed the point of that little rhyme white people?

Lets say that I'm positive Louie Farrakhan resents white people.

Then again I don't think he'd dislike nme if we met.

                                You can't legislate brotherly love.

You can't criminalize territorial loyalty either.

                                And it isn't a problem.

Why? Are white people supposed to be ashamed of something?

                                What would that be?

Oh! Snap! A white stereotype followed closely by a black one! Damnnnn!

                                Uh who cares?

Say white people can't jump or dance or, uh... is kinda funny.

Mention fried chicken or watermelon to a Negro and what happens?

Mention corned beef and cabbage or potatoes to me and shoud I want to fight you?

                                How stupid is that?

Perhaps we missed the point of that little rhyme white people?

                                Rhyme means nothing here.

The point was that (as opposed to the other races mentioned) the whites need to change their was and become "right."

How about if a white minister said "Black get off de crack?"

I just like to underscore the hypocrisy and double standard the left loves.

I personally don't think the anti white crap that makes up such a huge part of "black culture" is healthy for society.

If you think "payback" is warranted go pay somebody back.

You know, you're right. We white guys SHOULD be outraged that a black minister who lived through a time of true hate and racial segregation has the AUDACITY to tell white people to do right.

Leg, as someone whose opinion I respect, let me ask you this:

Are you offended because you feel lumped in with Lowery's use of the term "white" or is it more because you thought it was just inappropriate for the occasion?

I lean more to the latter than the former, obviously, and I was wondering if your anger was at the message or the timing of the message or some combination of the two.

Actually I think you're the asshole in this particular case.

As for myself I don't feel guilty.

You certainly mny if it makes you feel like you're a better person.

                                      And I'm not particularly offended.

Just pointing out the fact that YOU"D be if it were reversed.
