2012 Draft Review

The Browns Board

  • RG3 hasn't really been the 1b he was supposed to be after Andrew Luck - definitely a big drop off there. In terms of value, also consider closer to home people like Vontaze Burfict & Billy Winn. Both fell due to character concerns, both lived up to their 'early round talent'

Agree on Kuechly & Poe, both have been massive for their teams.

  • DeCastro plays very well when not injured.

It's not Ingram's fault that SD is trying to make him a 3-4 OLB. The guy needs to be in a stance as a 4-3 DE.

One steal that deserves mention is Marvin Jones down in Cinci.

Yea, as mentioned, this is based on actual production...and if someone was injured they could not produce, thus there contribution to their team was very low. That has nothing to do with how good they could be....or are playing this year. (I was only going on 2012 stats...not on anything in 2013)

  • More interesting - with 20/20 hindsight, how does that draft go?

    1. Colts - Luck

    2. Redskings - RG3

    3. Vikings - Matt Kalil - assuming we don't trade up for TRich

    4. Browns - ? Who do you take? Russell Wilson? Ryan Tannehill? Morris Claiborne?

Redskins would not trade up knowing what they know now about RG3 (fragile)

Someone would trade with the Rams for Russell Wilson though (Browns?)

And RG3 would go to the Vikings.

Try stopping RG3 and Peterson in the same backfield.

Luck, Wilson, Griffin would be the top three picks in that order. Browns would still have to trade up to get one of them.

Would you trade the Richardson pick, Weeden and Barkevious Mingo for Russell Wilson ... I think so.

  • No way in hell RG3 has performed as a top 5 player from that draft... Here's more what I see...

    1. Andrew Luck

    2. Dontari Poe

    3. Russell Wilson

    4. Luke Kuechly

    5. Fletcher Cox

Honorable mention : Alshon Jeffery, Lavonte David, Doug Martin, TY HIlton, RG3, Alfred Morris, Dont'a Hightower

Maybe in how they have performed ... but in how they would go in a redraft: 1.) Luck 2.) Wilson 3.) Griffin ... QBs are gold.

Rams - stand pat, draft Kuechly (they thought they had their QB at the time, and all the WRs in the first round haven't impressed yet)

Vikings - RG3 (to pair with Peterson)

    Browns - R. Wilson

I agree, the redskins would never have paid that much for him. That being said, I think they're happy with him right now, certainly given how he played last year.

Wilson looks good, but not quite in the same class as Luck, who just looks like an instant HOFer. Where would Weeden get drafted? Would he be drafted at all?

I think the Vikings were sticking with Ponder for one or two more years before giving up, and had a big hole at LT.

  • This is what you get on the bye week: 2012 draft review

The Top 5 picks of the 2012 draft at this point seem to be:

    Robert Griffin Jr

    Andrew Luck

    Russell Wilson

    Doug Martin

    Alfred Morris

    Honorable Mention: Blair Walsh K

This is based on overall production.

The worst picks out of the first round of the draft so far seem to be:

    Dre Kirkpatrick CB Cin.

    AJ Jenkins WR SFO

    David DeCastro OG Pitt.

    Shea McClellin DE Chic

    Melvin Ingram DE SD

again, these were based on their production in 2012. These guys may all end up doing fine as time goes on.

Apparently by a certain measurement, the very worst draft pick overall by a 2012 rookie was by:

    Ryan Lindley, QB Arizona

With his 7 ints and 0 TDs he is the only player to produce a negative number. (In other words, it is possible that they could have done better with a potted plant at QB)

what am I missing. Weeden not at the top of the list as worst?

This list deals with production. Despite everything Weeden has produced some if only by playing. Some of the ones listed didn't see any playing time...or very little. Some because of injury like DeCastro, others because they just haven't performed.

Believe it or not, to date, Weeden isn't the worst choice taken in that first round. Just the most glaring because of his position at QB...and because he is our problem. I expect that the Bengal faithful may be proclaiming Kirkpatrick a bigger bust than we see Weeden.

  • RG3 is a great player, period. He'd go top 3 in any draft. Ever.

In retrospect, I'm still not 100% sure Russell Wilson goes top 10. He's still 5'11", still throws fewer passes than anybody else, and still has the benefits of having an absolutely perfect situation (bomb running game, bomb defense). He's very good and would certainly go in round one... I just don't know if he'd go in the top 10.

After watching Tannehill support Psycho Ranger Incognito, it's tough for me to say, but in a redraft, the Browns (especially this group) take either Tannehill or possibly Nick Foles at #4. I know the latter sounds a little crazy, but Foles would absolutely go top 10 in a redraft.

Where does Richardson go? Third round? Certainly after Bernard Pierce.

You have a knack of asking really good follow up questions...

RG3 top three in any draft? Wow...

Tannehill at 4 makes sense, but while Foles (and remember I like him) would rise in the draft, I cannot see him moving all the way to early first round.

  • Early first round might be a stretch... but not HUGE stretch based on how he's played this year. Let's put it this way: Would the Browns have giddily traded Richardson for Foles instead of the Colts' pick? I think probably yes.

I think absolutely not. I really don't get this Foles obsession you have. I don't recall it much before the Oakland game?

My son was at AZ that year and I was a huge fan, thought he was getting dragged down by a bad team. Sobleski and I both thought he was going to be a starting NFL quarterback. I was really high on him, actually thought he looked like an obvious first round pick.

He's been playing well for two years now and I've been commenting on it. There are about 15 teams kicking themselves over Foles right now. Guarantee it. I think now they look back and feel like it was pretty obvious.

You do realize just a couple weeks earlier he was 22 of 31 for 300 yards and 3/0? Nobody just figured out Foles is good, especially me!!
