Roster problems

The Browns Board
7 3 532
  • As I see it here is a list of troubling areas for the Browns, all having to do with their roster:

    A. The QB problem. No top notch franchise quality QB. Weeden seems a failure, Campbell is really just a veteran journeyman, and Hoyer is what he is....another journeyman QB, given that the Browns are like his 4th team

    B. The RB problem. The TR dissappointment is perhaps worse than the BW3 dissappointment. McGahee is on his last legs, and the others are really just ham and eggers.

    C. The WR problem. Except for Gordon the other WRs on the active roster haven't stepped up to where they should be. Primarily Bess (he of the most drops in the NFL) and Little....who will fight for yardage...if and whenever he gets open and can actually get a pass thrown to him that he catches.

Jordan Cameron is being blanketed to much....or being left to float in space by our QB who has become Checkdown Charlie.

    D. The injured reserve list problem. Three guys that coulda/shoulda made this offense more dynamic are lost to the Browns: Hoyer, Travis Benjamin, Dion Lewis. Benjamin's loss hurts double because of his dynamite Special teams skills. And a guy that was brought in to replace Benjamin, Armonty Edwards is now also on IR. Lewis was hopefully going to be a third down back specialist, that Darrell Sproles type player. So much for that. No other person (Oby/Fozzy etc.) has done that.

On defense, there have not been as many losses. (Quinton Groves the only one), but that doesn't help either.

    E. The Bottom of the Roster problem. Sorry....but THIS was a big problem Sunday. The team has been playing musical chairs so much with those last 10-12 roster spots that there is absolutely no continuity amongst the guys that could come in an be a help.

This is mostly acute on special teams....and perhaps a big reason the Browns special teams had such a godawful showing last week. A revolving door does not make for continuity. Some of this is due to injuries, sure. But not all. I mean Lombardi is using these guys like they are gin rummy cards, discarding some, picking new ones up, right and left. This the special teams consist mainly of these "bottom of the roster" players, is it any wonder they didn't perform adequately?

  • I think you skipped the LB problem... in particular the ILB. We're shy at least one tough, hard-hitter who can also pass cover. It was such a pleasure watching Kuechly the other nite. What was lost in the controversial finish to that game was that he was 30 yards deep on the play and (more or less) in position.

Of those areas you mentioned, WR tops my list. Add a Sammy Watkins (looks a lot like the next Larry Fitzgerald to my eye) and him in the mix with Gordon and Little with Benji's return looks awfully good. Either the Bess' return would be icing on that cake...

While Hoyer is still an unknown quantity, in my eyes he showed enough promise vs the "top prospects" to drop QB out of at least our first pick if not the 1st round altogether.

I don't think we have a RB problem.... I think we have a run game problem. I think we need a dominant interior lineman in addition to a RB prospect.

Depth comes in time and the arrival at 53 (or more) men deep is always last. Quality depth comes when you build it from the top. In my view we can most clearly do that in this draft in two areas... WR and OG.

Yes, we need a good ILB....but it did seem the least of the problems,...plus I see no relief in that area coming in this upcoming draft....at least early.

Of course it is always a cart/horse horse/cart thing with the WRs and the QB. If we had top notch QBs we may not have a WR problem.. Nevertheless....we can use better there.

Fair enough.....both areas need improved.....the guys...particularly the OGs who open the holes, and the guys who run through it need upgraded.

Yes, those are our top end needs... QB/RB/WR/OG.....but....Maybe this FO WILL use their 10 picks on the bottom end needs....on the guys that will play special teams. A lot of guys on the bottom rung of this roster are going to be Aufed if there is a repeat of the performance of last week.

(Yes, I am using a term in a football context that I learned from Project Runway....what of it? 😠

  • Project Runway? Had you not mentioned it, I assure you I'd have never known it....

Whenever they "remove" one of the designers from Project Runway, Heidi Klum (and who doesn't like getting an eyeful of her) goes up to the rejectee, gives him her a kiss and says Auf Weidersehn.

So, the term developed that someone being shown the door is being Aufed...or I guess it is Auf'd.

    From Urban Dictionary:

    auf'd

Used as a verb to describe getting voted off of popular reality show Project Runway. A twist on the word 'offed' that refers to German Host Heidi Klum's final words to every contestant, 'Auf Wiedersehen,' followed by an air kiss to each cheek.
Who will get auf'd this week on Project Runway? Tune in to Bravo on Wednesday night at 9 to find out!
I think it works in other contexts like this where some football player is being shown the door.
  • Heidi can Auf me anytime...

  • I am hoping the FO will use up the cap money to fill holes as needed for depth in FA and not big money for projected starters draft picks this coming year. Draft smartly for studs through the draft. (draft a QB in 2nd round) . ILB, WR, CB, OG, C, RB, QB, in no specific order via draft or FA.
