  • On the last question, Sports Illustrated has given their answer by listing the Top 10 QB rivalries, since 1950. I am going to add one pre-50s one as #11....though it likely would rate higher:

    11. Sammy Baugh vs. Sid Luckman. These two faced off in several NFL title games. in the late 30s/40s.

    10. Ken Stabler vs. Terry Bradshaw. Numerous face offs for AFC supremacy in the 1970s.

    9. Joe Namath vs. John Unitas. Most famously is their 1968 SBIII faceoff....in which Unitas relieved Earl Morrall, but after the Colts joined the AFC in 1970 these two did have several inter-division matchups. It was also a clash of personal styles with JU the straight laced crew cut king and Namath the QB of the hippies.

    8. Joe Montana vs. Dan Marino. Montana got the better of Marino in Marino's only SB appearance.

    7. John Elway vs. Bernie Kosar. Three AFC title game matchups with famous names like The Drive and The Fumble.

    6. Steve Young vs. Troy Aikman. Forty Niners were Cowboys biggest competition in their early 90s dynasty, breaking through one in 1994 to break a potential 4 SB victory streak.

    5. Otto Graham vs. Bobby Layne. Ultimate matchup of the proficient/surgical QB (OG) vs. the guy that played like his hair was on fire. (Layne). Met 3 times in NFL title game.

    4. Jim Kelly vs. Dan Marino. Went toe to toe for a good decade for AFC East Supremacy.

    3. Bart Starr vs. Johnny Unitas Colts and Packers were in the same division from 1950 til 1967. And for about a decade it was Starr vs. Unitas. Johnny U. got the early edge, but then the Packer team became too strong later.

    2. Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady. Their teams have battled for AFC/NFL supremacy for over a decade. Peyton just doing it now in a new location.

    1. Roger Staubach vs. Terry Bradshaw. Two memorable close Super Bowl shootouts between these two garners them the SI #1 spot.

  • 1. Who do you think if the better QB....Peyton or Brady?

    Manning

    2. Do you think these two are still the two premiere QBs in the NFL....or has someone else surpassed these two, if so, who?

I think there are four premiere QBs ... Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers ... and then there is everybody else.

    3. What, in your opinion has been the greatest QB rivalry in NFL history. These two, or someone else?

    These two

  • Future matchups that could become epic:

    1. Ben Roethlisberger vs. Joe Flacco. As noted, nearing being the most frequent matchup of SB winners.

    2. Russell Wilson vs. Colin Kaepernick. A budding rivalry between two new school style QBs. And you know, you may want to throw Cam Newton in there to make this a menage a trois!!! And maybe RGIII to make it a menage a quatre of good young, mobile (yes...black) QBs....all in the NFC.

    3. Could Andrew Luck vs. Jake Locker make some waves? Hard to tell.

    4. Rodgers vs. Cutler vs. Stafford. These three will shake the trees in the NFCN for a while...and compete overall with the guys in #2.

5???. A year ago I thought we might be in for quite a ride on the "Redheaded Rumble Train" with Dalton and Weeden.....but, apparently not....unless something miraculous happens, like Campbell getting hurt....Weeden coming in to the rescue, beating the Steelers and doing enough the rest of the way to get the Browns to the playoffs. Some dream, eh?

agreed except I take Brady cuz the rings and he can play in cold weather.

  • This week, I believe on MNF is yet another matchup of Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning for, I believe the 14th time in their careers.

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/10017323/bill-barnwell-tom-brady-peyton-manning

See the above for a story on it.

These two have butted more times on a field than any other two Super Bowl winning QBs with the exception of the Bart Starr/Johnny Unitas tandem.

Though, note: Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger have butted heads at least 12-13 times. I think BR missed a game last year due to injury, and another due to his suspension a few years ago.

Probably by next year....assuming BR stays in Pitt, those two will have met the most times of any SB Winning QB pair.

All that said, here are a couple of "survey questions" I would like to ask you:

    1. Who do you think if the better QB....Peyton or Brady?

    2. Do you think these two are still the two premiere QBs in the NFL....or has someone else surpassed these two, if so, who?

    3. What, in your opinion has been the greatest QB rivalry in NFL history. These two, or someone else?

A slightly better head is on Manning's shoulders, but I like Brady's mechanics better.

Forced to pick one, I'd say Manning.

    2. Do you think these two are still the two premiere QBs in the NFL....or has someone else surpassed these two, if so, who?

Brees is clearly in the mix, but no, these are still the top 2.

    3. What, in your opinion has been the greatest QB rivalry in NFL history. These two, or someone else?

    I'm going with Farve/ Rodgers...

I just don't think of Manning/ Brady as "rivals". Too much respect there...

I need a healthy dose of animus in my rivalry.

    So "someone else".... but who?

First to come to mind was Montana/ Young... they really did not like each other. But it was a same roster rivalry more than an on-field one.

Along the same lines would fall Farve/ Rodgers... and they did have more on-field heat.

On field ones that first came to mind were Bradshaw/ Stabler.... maybe Kelly/ Marino...

    Then of course there's Kosar/ Clemons... 🙂

  • My own anwers:

    1. I am and have been of the opinion that Brady is actually the better QB. He is the one that I would choose for my team, given a choice. He is 3-1 in SB wins over Peyton, and 5-2 in SB appearances....plus I believe he has a healthy lead in the head to head matchups with Peyton.

    2. But, at ages 38 and 35, I believe they are both a bit past their prime. if I am asked: "who is the best QB playing right here, right now in the latter half of the 2013 season"? I would say: Aaron Rodgers if healthy. If I were asked " who would you want as your QB in 2014 going forward I would say "Andrew Luck".

    3. As for what is the greatest QB rivalry in history.....it may be the old school in me, but I personally think that it is the Bart Starr vs. Johnny Unitas rivalry. Here are the 16 games between them:

    10/2/58 Colts 24 Packers 17

    112/58 Colts 56 Packers 0

    11/15/59 Colts 28 Packers 24

    11/6/60 Colts 38 Packers 24

    10/8/61 Packers 45 Colts 7

    11/5/61 Colts 45 Packers 21

    10/28/62 Packers 17 Colts 6

    11/18/62 Packers 17 Colts 13

    9/29/63 Packers 31 Colts 20

    9/20/64 Colts 21 Packers 20

    10/18/64 Colts 24 Packers 21

    9/26/65 Packers 20 Colts 17

    12/12/65 Packers 42 Colts 7

    9/10/66 Packers 24 Colts 3

    12/10/66 Packers 14 Colts 10

    11/5/67 Colts 13 Packers 10.....last matchup between the 2

Note: In the 1965 season the Packers and Colts met in the postseason (winner to take on the Cleveland Browns). This was the only postseason game between the two teams in that era....however BOTH Unitas and Starr did NOT play in that game!! as both were injured. Recall that this was the famous game in which Earl Morral was also hurt and Tom Matte had to come off his RB position to play QB for the Packers. The Packers won....but next week Starr was back and the Packers beat the Browns (in their last championship game appearance to date)

  • Just speaking in general, I've held the largely unpopular opinion that Manning will always be slightly overrated for this post-season record and preformances. Before I get flamed here, Manning from a skills perspective might be the best QB in the NFL history. The way he understands the game of football is nothing short of amazing. However, it's plain to see that for whatever reason he chokes in the playoffs. It's not just the record of 9-11, it's the completely non-Peyton like things he does. Everyone last year wants to blame the loss on that safety making a terrible play. I agree, that was friking miserable. People don't mention that in double OT peyton Manning threw a wounded duck across his body for the INT that essentially clinched the game for the Ravens on a 1st and 10 play.

I suppose it's how you measure greatness. If you're going by talent alone, then even today I'd take Manning over anyone in the league. If you're going by that clutch post-season edge, not so much.

  • 1. Who do you think if the better QB....Peyton or Brady?

    Peyton ,but theyre awfully close

    2. Do you think these two are still the two premiere QBs in the NFL....or has someone else surpassed these two, if so, who?

    Rodgers,Manning,Brady,Bree's in that order.

    3. What, in your opinion has been the greatest QB rivalry in NFL history. These two, or someone else?

    Bobby Lane and Otto Graham.

    2. Do you think these two are still the two premiere QBs in the NFL....or has someone else surpassed these two, if so, who?

Yes, they are still the best 2

    3. What, in your opinion has been the greatest QB rivalry in NFL history. These two, or someone else?

    Staubach-Tarkenton

Dawson-Lamonica/Stabler/Blanda (the Chiefs/Raiders rivalry was awesome in the 60s-70s)

    Sipe-Bradshaw

  • I'd take Manning in the regular season, but I would want Brady in the Playoffs

  • 1. Who do you think if the better QB....Peyton or Brady?

You know if it wasn't for Manning it would be hard to question Brady not being the greatest QB of all time. Oh BTW thats Eli i'm talking about not Peyton.

Peyton been to the playoffs 12 different seasons 8 of those he hasn't even won a game. Brady been to the Playoffs 10 different season and in 8 of those seasons hes won at least 1 game.

    2. Do you think these two are still the two premiere QBs in the NFL....or has someone else surpassed these two, if so, who?

    3. What, in your opinion has been the greatest QB rivalry in NFL history. These two, or someone else?

    Smith & Couch

  • 1. Who do you think if the better QB....Peyton or Brady?

Tough call but I'd say that P. Manning is the better overall quarterback.

    2. Do you think these two are still the two premiere QBs in the NFL....or has someone else surpassed these two, if so, who?

Brees has a case for being in the top two. Maybe Rogers as well. I'd say Manning remains overall #1 with Brees right behind and Brady 3rd to 4th but again that's just right now

    3. What, in your opinion has been the greatest QB rivalry in NFL history. These two, or someone else?

I don't know about history but its certainly been the premiere rivalry in my life
