Ranking the Super Bowl QBs

The Browns Board
7 4 514
  • Prior to last year's Super Bowl game the Bleacher Report ranked the 29 QBs who had started and won Super Bowl games. Though it is foolish clearly to limit this list to just Super Bowl winning QBs and not prior title winning QBs as well, I will go along with it for the purpose of conversation. Here is the ranking:

    29. Trent Dilfer

    28. Mark Rypien

    27. Brad Johnson

    26. Jeff Hostetler

    25. Doug Williams

    24. Jim Plunkett

    23. Joe Theismann

    22. Jim McMahon

    21. Ken Stabler

    20. Phil Simms

    19. Bob Griese

    18. Aaron Rodgers

    17. Joe Namath

    16. Len Dawson

    15. Eli Manning

    14. Ben Roethlisberger

    13. Kurt Warner

    12. Drew Brees

    11. Troy Aikman

    10. Bart Starr

    9. Terry Bradshaw

    8. Peyton Manning

    7. Steve Young

    6. Brett Favre

    5. Roger Staubach

    4. Tom Brady

    3. John Elway

    2. John Unitas

    1. Joe Montana

Joe Flacco is not on the list because it was written earlier.

    Questions:

    A. Where would you rank Flacco on this list

    B. Where do you disagree with the rankings involved?

    C. Who do you think will join this list this year?

  • My own opinions:

    A. Right now, Flacco would be ranked between Plunkett and Williams. Somewhere on the bottom rung.

    B. I have always been of the opinion that Steve Young has always been overrated. I also think they underrate Rodgers. On this list, hell I would probably have those 2 switch positions, putting Young at about 18 and Rodgers in the Top 10.

    C. In theory this list may not expand this year because there are 6 guys on the list who could possibly repeat: Eli/Peyton/Brees/BR/Brady/Rodgers. Eli/BR/Rodgers though right now are on the outside looking in on the playoff race. Peyton has the best chance.....but in my opinion the guy that could join this list is Russell Wilson.

    Questions:

    A. Where would you rank Flacco on this list

    B. Where do you disagree with the rankings involved?

    C. Who do you think will join this list this year?

Does this list only include how the QB performed in the SB? Or their entire career?

A/ I'd put Flacco anywhere from 20-25. Although he had one hell of a postseason last year, his career stats aren't all that spectacular. He definitely did what he needed to win last year's SB, but he also rode the leadership and skill of the defense.

    B. If it's based on QB skills overall and career numbers, I think Rodgers should be higher, at least jumping Eli. If anything, I would swap the two on the list, regardless of Eli winning two SB's.

    C. If the playoffs started today, the teams in the playoffs would be (with their respective QB's listed):

NFC: Seattle (Russell WIlson), New Orleans (Drew Brees*), Detroit (Matt Stafford), Dallas (Tony Romo), Carolina (Cam Newton) and San Francisco (Colin Kaepernick)

AFC: Denver (Peyton Manning*), New England (Tom Brady*), Indianapolis (Andrew Luck), Cincinnati (Andy Dalton), Kansas City (Alex Smith) and Baltimore (Joe Flacco*)

I put an asterisk by past SB championship QB's. Theoretically, there's a 33% chance that a former SB champion QB will win again this year. I think Denver, New England, and New Orleans all have good chances of winning based on their QB alone. Seattle is a scary good team overall.

One team that I wouldn't count out is Carolina. Honestly, I think they have what it takes to make a SB run. Call me crazy, but they are my darkhorse right now. They have a top 3 defense in the NFL, a consistent run game, and Cam has improved his leadership by leaps and bounds.

To answer the question, I think Cam and WIlson have the best chance of being added, while the 3 other QB's I listed have a good chance at moving up on the list.

I would say it is based on their entire careers given that Johnny U is so high and most of his career was pre-SB

I think the cream will rise to the top....which means another potential Brady/P.Manning/Brees title. The question is whether or not we will see some fresh cream in our Super Bowl coffee with Wilson/Newton

It's not a bad list, but Brad Johnson had a way better career than Hostetler or Williams.

    Questions:

    A. Where would you rank Flacco on this list

    20-ish

    B. Where do you disagree with the rankings involved?

Bradshaw is ranked way to low- he won 4 and lost none. I'd put him 2nd behind Montana, and Brady 3rd.

    C. Who do you think will join this list this year?

I don't think it will be anybody new. I happen to think Seattle will get beat if they make it to the Superbowl by Brady or Peyton. Longshot guess would be Romo or Stafford, the only teams who could upend the Seahawks before the SB.

Yea, I would not put any money on Romo going anywhere. He would really have to change his stripes. And unless the Lions get Ravens like hot, I don't see them coming out of the NFC. Best bets in the NFL are Seattle/Carolina/NO/SF.

In the AFC, yea, it is likely going to be another Manning/Brady mano a mano contest.

Dalton? P-shaw. Luck? Some day, but not this day. Smith? Nyet. Flacco...I would eat my shirt if they repeat. Tannehill? Might as well say Weeden.
