McCrieght Fired!

The Browns Board

  • Interesting speculation over at the OBR (free article):

Earlier this week, Lane Adkins told subscribers in the OBR’s exclusive Insider Blog that there had been some turbulence in the negotiations for Kokinis’ arrival in Cleveland. Some of these differences may have centered around McCreight’s role in the organization, as Browns owner Randy Lerner was known to advocate McCreight’s remaining with the franchise.

McCreight’s exit will impact the team’s free agency and draft planning in the short term, as the front office executive has been leading the Browns’ off-season scouting efforts.

  • That's not the impression I got from reading reports from the Browns' war room, Ytown.

And we just fired the guy who represented us at the Senior Bowl. I hate that.

I read that Daniel Jeremiah, our national scout, was in charge of the scouts and scouting of the Senior Bowl. Also, McCreight Director of Player Personnel, but I believe he was more involved in free agency and evaluating pro personnel. I could be wrong but always heard that Jeremiah was Savage's right hand for college scouting.

  • Well, could be that Jeremiah will end up getting fired as well.

Trust me when I tell you that if we hire Kokinos - there won't be 1 person with a pink slip with better knowledge of WHAT we need than him. I trust what Ernie Accorsi has to say about him. It's good stuff.

This TJ McFly hasn't really catapulted us to another level with his FA choices of Kevin Shaffer as LEFT Tackle and guys like Joe Andruzzi with the fitness status of a 65 year old man paid to be another Steve Hutchinson. Somebody got boned bad and it was us! Jason Fisk would have been a great idea 10 years ago BUT nowhere close when we signed him and I think the same thing can be said about Ted Washington.

We have cap jam from very BAD free agent ideas and too much knee jerk. The guys we've drafted for our front 7 have SUCKED with the exception of maybe Jackson and Hall over a 4 year period. I'm talking 4 years so the fact that I only have 2 names worthy of praise is insufficient.

I think the BIGGEST area we need improvement in is with the Personnel decisions. We're talking about a team that was 4-12 in the 4th year of a plan who's mission was to make everyone forget the seasons of 4 wins. Isn't 4 wins the same as it ever was? When you can't score a single offensive TD over the final 6 weeks of the season there's a whole lot more going wrong than just BAD coaching.

Who's losing sleep over changing the people in charge of personnel? PLEASE don't! We need this change. Because of the last personnel group - we had to resort exclusively to free agency for front 7 guys. Shaun Smith, Robiare Smith, Corey Williams, Louis Leonard, Shaun Rogers, Willie McGinest, etc. The second Rogers steps off the field - our entire defense caves in so it does matter folks.

If a 3-4 is what you want to be - you gotta be BETTER at drafting the right personel for it in order to be successful, build continuity and maintain a healthy cap. When we get guys injured - we're right back to asking what the FREAK have we drafted? On either line, can you tell me what we got right via the draft AFTER a #3 overall pick? Nothing. Sowells' reputation in the Big 10 was this: "Candyass." We always put Lenny's Kravitz Friedman in ahead of him so I'm guessing where there's smoke - there's fire. Big Jon Dunn turned into 1-800-ALL-DONE.

I don't think you can succeed with 50% of the Head Coach - Personnel Director tagteam. There's a reason Pittsburgh fired Tom Donahoe and the Buffalo Bills learned it the hard way. When you're 4-12 after the 4th year of a plan - ANYONE behind putting that talent show together is VERY replaceable even McFly.

    - Tom F.

  • heading into the offseason with no scouts is a sure-fire way to add the players we need to be successful next year.

lerner and this new coaching staff look better all the time.

  • I think McCreight was actual in a higher level position than Kokinis was in Baltimore.

McCreight was director of player personnel (both draft & FA), whereas Kokinis was director of pro personnel. Steve Sabo holds/held Kokinis's job in Cleveland.

James "Shack" Harris was at the Senior Bowl practices. Could be that Mangini/Kokinis sent him there as their "special envoy".

This was Kokinis' firing, I think. He wants his own personnel guy and it might be Shack Harris. Bottom line is that Kokinis didn't want McCreight (who holds the same job as Kokinis held in Baltimore) and that's his right.

    Exactly

Have him fired/removed before Kokinis comes in. Don't want the new guy being known as the headhunter, firing people as his first duty.

  • Good luck, TJ.

  • What's confusing is that Kokinis and most of these guys worked in Balt together.

I guess him and McCreight weren't buds.

  • I'm not been too impressed with Shack Harris's drafts in Jacksonville. His picks from Round 3 on have been kinda brutal:

    2006

    • Round 3: Clint Ingram, OLB, Oklahoma - had a decent rookie season, but has been a backup ever since
    • Round 5: Brent Hawkins, LB, Illinois State - got cut in the middle of '08
    • Round 7: James Wyche, DE, Syracuse - spent season on IR, hasn't ever been active for a regular season game
    2007
    • Round 3: Mike Walker, WR, UCF - missed rookie year due to knee injury suffered in college. Had 16 catches this year, but also battled some more knee issues.
    • Round 4: Adam Podlesh, P, Maryland - has been an average at best punter, making this pick all the more questionable
    • Round 4: Brian Smith, OLB, Missouri - never really recovered from a hip fracture he suffered during his senior year. Not in the NFL.
    • Round 5: Uchi Nwaneri, OG, Purdue - didn't make the team
    • Round 5: Josh Gattis, S, Wake Forest - didn't make the team
    • Round 5: Derek Landri, DT, Notre Dame - undersized DT (6'2", 282 lbs.) has been a decent rotational player; made 15 tackles and notched 2 sacks this year
    • Round 7: John Broussard, WR, San Jose State - didn't make team
    • Round 7: Chad Nkang, S-OLB, Elon - college linebacker never adjusted to playing safety. Only a special teams player.
    2008
    • Round 5: Thomas Williams, OLB, USC - only active for six games (1 tackle)
    • Round 5: Trae Williams, CB, USF - didn't make the team
    • Round 7: Chauncey Washington, RB, USC - only got a few carries during the season
  • i don't think anyone's been impressed by shack's drafts. all those guys blow.

  • I'd take Mike Walker and Clint Ingram...the rest are sheot

It's thought that the Browns scouting staff will remain in place at least this season because they're already on the job. I'd also heard that Jeremiah was heading up the Senior Bowl work and that we were being very, very aggressive.

This stuff is pretty delicate and tough to judge from our limited perspective. Bottom line is that Kokinis didn't want McCreight (who holds the same job as Kokinis held in Baltimore) and that's his right.

I 'm sorry did I miss something? Kokinis is firing people while still working for Bwhore? BULLSHIFT

Where is this guy? If he wants this job his a$$ should have been in Berea on Monday morning, then fire McBumble himself like a real GM is supposed to.

No,I don't buy it, he's dragg'n his feet because he can.We had no Plan B.

    This things starting to reek!
