I say Qb and let him sit behind Hoyer or fight it out in training camp.

Bortles if he's there and goes into the draft. If not, BPA. No reaching please, browns.

no trading picks to move up pleez. way too many holes to fill.

if that means drafting a DL or LB first, then so be it because god knows there is a lot of smoke and mirrors with this so-called GREAT QB class.

hell i'd be glad to draft LB OL CB WR RB OL then a QB and go BPA for the remaining picks.

the rookie QB will get a good look at behind the 100% healthy hoyer and if they don't pan out..............."with the 1st pick in the 2015 NFL draft, the cleveland browns select Jameius Winston, QB Florida State.

now put that in your pipe and smoke it..................of course with holiday cheer my friends!!

        merry XMAS!

With 1a I would hope for either Bortles or Watkins, 1b Robinson or Garoppolo. I'm all for wr/qb in the first round but if LB OL or CB (or nearly any position) provides a better value, I'm all for that selection as well.

so what you are really saying is that you are open to any move.

I don't want Carr either. It seems like the media are trying to shoehorn some QBs into the voids left by Mariotta and Hundley. I'm not buying it, there is only one QB I like in the first round and he will probably not think he will be available by the 4th pick.

I will not be upset if we don't take a QB in the 1st three rounds.

I've watched Carr and notice the same thing. His mechanics are awful. He relies on his arm strength

alone (and he does have a big arm). The vast majority of his throws are off his back leg with

no step up or follow through. His head is down a lot also.

I don't like Boyd either because his mechanics are just as bad.Plus he doesn't have Carr's arm

or size.I'd like to see more of Bortels to form an opinion.

It seems all the QBs in this draft have some issues whether it be size (Manziel) slight build (Bridegewater)

or mechanics so at QB at the 6th pick or so is up in the air.

                          Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

Even Santa Claus can't make a franchise quarterback fall into the laps of NFL teams looking to upgrade at the position in the 2014 NFL draft.

Many fans will measure up subsequent draft classes to that of 2012, when you hadAndrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Ryan Tannehill drafted in the first round, whileRussell Wilson and Nick Foles went in the third. It was the kind of QB crop you only see every decade or so.

Looking ahead to the 2014 class, you don't see any players you'd consider at the level Luck and Griffin were.

Teddy Bridgewater is No. 1 on most experts' boards, but he has his fair share of issues. From there, it only gets murkier.

That means there's room for quarterbacks hovering a little further down the board, and they have the opportunity to impress coaches and scouts, jumping at least a round or two between now and next May.

Among those QBs primed to make a move upward, these three stand out.

                          Blake Bortles, Central Florida

                          hi-res-185335034-blake-bortles-of-the-ce

                          Andy Lyons/Getty Images

Perhaps this is the low-hanging fruit.

Should Blake Bortles enter the NFL draft, he'll immediately be one of the best quarterbacks available. It says a lot about his potential that Todd McShay mocked him to the Oakland Raiders at No. 3. That's quite a jump from where other experts would have had Bortles on their respective boards.

The Central Florida star has everything you look for in a quarterback.

He's listed at 6'4" on UCF's official site, so there won't be any concerns about whether he's big enough to play quarterback in the NFL.

When it comes to the attributes, Bortles has enough mobility to not be a statue in the pocket, his arm strength is good enough and he's an accurate passer.

Having a great arm isn't the best indicator for success, though. If it was, Jeff George and JaMarcus Russell would be Hall of Famers, while Peyton Manning would have washed out in the league after a few years. That's why it's nice that accuracy isn't a concern with Bortles.

There's little not to like about him, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him as the first quarterback off the board.

                          David Fales, San Jose State

                          hi-res-186647904-quarterback-david-fales

                          Ethan Miller/Getty Images

David Fales will inevitably have to deal with the same questions surrounding Derek Carr. Is the Mountain West an optimal proving ground for a draft prospect? Was his talent inflated by the nature of his team's offense?

Unlike Carr, Fales isn't projected as a first-round prospect right now, so the level of scrutiny won't be as intense.

However, Fales can only go up between now and the draft.

NFL.com's Charles Davis is high on the San Jose State QB's potential:

When league evaluators do their due diligence on
                          Fales
, I think they will be coming back saying, "You know what, I'm not sure he should be ranked behind some of those big-name guys."

I've talked to people that played against him and they all say he's legit. You could take him and put him at many big schools and they would be very happy to have his services.

The things that are wrong with Fales aren't the kind that raise a bunch of red flags. The biggest critique that gives you pause is that he's too willing to throw into coverage if he sees the tiniest of windows. Jay Cutler and especially Brett Favre have been successful as gunslingers, but they're the exception rather than the rule

Other than that, scouts shouldn't be too scared away.

Fales has a great pocket presence. He knows where to take that one step that will help him avoid the rush. It's the kind of thing that you can't easily instill in a player.

As Davis says, when scouts and coaches take a look at Fales, they'll see a solid quarterback with room to improve. He's got the mental side of the game down, and with some slight mechanical tweaks, he can be a productive NFL starter.

                          Tajh Boyd, Clemson

                          hi-res-7865268_crop_exact.jpg?w=650&h=43

                          Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

There's a lot on the line for Tajh Boyd in the next month. He's got the Orange Bowl against Ohio State on Jan. 3 and then the Senior Bowl on Jan. 26. With strong performances in both, he can silence some of the critics' doubts, while simultaneously making many forget about those poor performances against Florida State and South Carolina.

Boyd acknowledged how important this stage is for him, per The Greenville News (via NFL.com's Mike Huguenin😞 "I think everything toward the end of this process is going to be a deciding factor in how high I go (in the 2014 draft)."

The Clemson star has plenty of flaws in his game, and he's far from a can't-miss prospect. However, he's got a solid arm and demonstrated an ability to make the short and intermediate throws. In addition, his interception numbers dropped slightly from last year to this year, illustrating an improvement in Boyd's decision-making.

Boyd likely won't crack the first round, but he could see a big jump in the event of a good showing at both the Orange and Senior Bowls.

Pretty much, as long as they scout well and get good value this team will get better.

I would be nervous about the Browns continuing on their merry, shitty way without at least a really good quarterback (90 plus PR)... but I honestly think from owner on down, this group understands the reality of the league (metrics and all). I think it's quarterback... and then everything else, to paraphrase Grossi.

I think we'll also upgrade at receiver, running back, and probably one new right-side blocker. If we do those four things on offense and called it an offseason.... and did it really well? The Browns just might be a very, very good football team keep everything else the same. But I'm sure with all that money and 10 picks, we'll do a lot more. It's gonna be a busy offseason.

This team has to be among the league's worst few at skill positions, even with Gordon. Certainly they have the lowest PAID skill players (2nd lowest on offense overall). Time to pony up.

QB is by far the most important position. No one is arguing that fact. You just don't seem to realize that using a 1st round pick on a QB does not guarantee success. Drafting for 90+ PR is bullshit. It means absolutely nothing. The so called draft experts are wrong far more times than they are right. There may not even be 1 franchise QB in the entire draft yet you act like there are 6 or 7 of them. Garoppolo is who the Browns need. We have other needs to address in the first round since there are no stand out QBs in the draft..

Pretty much, as long as they scout well and get good value this team will get better.

that is the one thing i think that most fans don't realize is how bad our scouting has been since '99. i mean can we pleez find some people with solid scouting credentials for once in my friggin lifetime?

shep we all agree we need a QB but no one on the list so far stands out that we need to sell the farm to get bridgewater or boyd or whoever is at our first pick. out of the 3 QBs that diehard had on his list i'm most impressed with bortles 1st pick or fales with a later pick. who knows, grab evans or watkins with our first pick or best defensive player of need available (LB).

i also agree that we need an upgrade at every position you mentioned on offense, but you seem to forget there are 2 sides to a team......offense and defense. we still need that #2 CB (have since haden was drafted). we need to upgrade the pass rush and speed with our coverage LBs. OL on the right side could be all replaced tomorrow and i'd have no problem with that.

hell we've got a good foundation but that foundation is spread out at different spots that our house could cave in again next year with out specific targets on both sides of the ball.

IMO it doesn't matter where we get 'OUR' guys it's just that we hit closer to the bullseye with our picks next year then we have in a long time.

this will be the true test of our new FO.

Shep, over the last 4 games the Browns have averaged 24 ppg- that should be enough to win a few of them. For reasons I can't understand the defense has totally fallen apart at the end of the second quarter (something like outscored 57-3) and the end of games (8 out of 9 opponent drives in the last few minutes=TD) So there's also room for serious improvement on that side of the ball. The pass rush in crunch time has been anemic at best lately. Though the linebacking is an improvement over what it's been in years past- none of those guys are going to the Pro Bowl with that level of play.

I'm not disagreeing with your assessment of our offensive needs, but we're not a SB caliber defense yet. I have to wonder if opposing teams have figured out Horton's schemes. It wouldn't 1\2 surprise me for him to get sent packing, assuming he doesn't get a HC gig in 2014, and the way the Browns D has regressed he may well not.
