I disagree with Grossi. When you're dealt a 2 of hearts and 7 of clubs, you're pretty much screwed. I think Lombardi and Banner have been trying to get some look-see's at guys they see as having potential. Given this is their first year in the seat, I give them a pass to try shopping in the clearance section hoping to find a great deal... The problem is, they haven't really found the "gems" they've been looking for... Lombardi is the GM and Banner is the CEO. I'm giving these guys the benefit-of-the-doubt when it comes to their personnel decisions b/c I really want to see what these guys can build in Cleveland... So far, I like what they've done and I'm really excited to see what this offseason brings...

man i wish i had the optimism you have. not in my genes.

i understand these last four games we're starting to get a 'look-see' at guys like baker and cooper and some others and some have played well and some have stunk it up.

BUT they knew what they had coming out of training camp (you know the time after the draft and after FA signings) so to find out some guys who YOU selected can't hold their own or even play at this level is why lombardi is a tinkerer. because he is trying to make up for his intial fuckups.

if i was haslam and banner i'd have to pull the reigns in a little tighter this year come draft time and not let him go all CBS SPORTS crazy on this franchise next year.

you pick 'em. you play 'em. if they suck and don't pan out we all know whose shoulders that blunder would fall on. yep, haslam for hiring these guys. and i'm not saying fire anyone. i'm excited to see what happens come april next year and during FA signing period and training camp.

BUT there sure as hell can't be any craig powell or courtney brown blunders or they'll be a lot more at stake than the team sucking. they'll be people's jobs at stake.

I think you fairly well make my point: the lower third of the roster contains very little holdover from last year. Coming out of training camp those "bottom 15" of the roster were pretty much newbies brought in by Lombardi....and he has kept shuffling that 15 card deck.

OK, maybe he has found an upgrade from a 3 of clubs to a 5 of spades......he ain't found no Jacks/Queens/Kings/Aces.

And the problem with all this shuffling is that these special teams guys mostly are not getting proper training. Sure, perhaps a new player has a sliver more talent than the guy he replaced....but the guy he replaced had at least learned how to play in the system....but the new guys doesn't. So you have a total lack of continuity....and that causes complete breakdown.

Here is EVERY move to the active, 53-man roster (and the obvious reason) since the season started...

Tori Gurley to active roster (as replacement for Gordon)

Tori Gurley waived (when Gordon came back from suspension)

Willis McGahee signed (when we traded Richardson)

Fozzy Whittaker signed from SD (to be our #3 RB at the time, waived Josh Cooper)

Charles Johnson signed (when Hoyer went on IR)

Julian Posey and Tori Gurley activated (Bobby Rainey waived, Josh Aubrey went to IR)

Jordan Poyer signed from Philly (as an upgrade to Posey)

Brian Tyms signed from MIA (Tori Gurley waived)

Darius Eubanks activated (as an upgrade to Magee at LB)

Armanti Edwards signed (after Benjamin went to IR)

Reid Fragel signed from Cincy (after C.Johnson went to IR)

Jason Pinkston activated (Rashad Butler waived)

Magee re-activated (after Quentin Groves went to IR)

Josh Cooper activated (after Armanti Edwards went to IR)

Alex Tanney signed (b/c we only had 1 healthy QB) (Brian Tyms waived)

Andre Smith signed from DAL (Patrick Lewis waived)

Caleb Hanie signed (as insurance and after Magee went to IR)

Julian Posey activated (after Chris Ownes went to IR)

Brian Tyms activated (after Desmond Bryant placed on non-football illness list)

Edwin Baker signed (Caleb Hanie waived b/c we did not need him)

Brian Sanford signed (after Davone Bess was placed on reserve list)

I put in bold the moves we made b/c of injury, trade, or suspension... Most of the "tinkering" has been done on the practice squad, which happens to every team throughout the season b/c other teams can just sign your players away, and you want to keep those PS spots filled...

That leaves only 4 moves made during the entire season that seemed to be in hopes of upgrading a position, not purely b/c of need. That's not very many, especially not enough to "ruin" an entire special teams unit. Maybe the "blame" should be placed on Chud b/c he picks which 45 out of 53 suite up each week... or Tabor who picks his special teams units... or, the truth is we could just blame all the injuries... it's been another tough season for us with regards to injuries...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the majority of these moves made necessary by injury?

Like I said before. You posted all the practice squad moves... those are inconsequental, and should not AT ALL affect the team that takes the field on Sundays! EVERY team moves PS players around... it's inevitable... The list I posted are ALL the moves made regarding the 53-man roster this year, which are the ONLY ones affecting Sundays. And as xxDaBuckeyexx said, they were mostly necessary due to injury...

But there were 9000 moves taking a guy off the practice squad, putting him back on, releasing him, then signing him again.

That sure as hell affects the roster on Sundays.
