Just curious, why would you rather have Chud? I'm not saying that I wouldn't, I'm just asking the reason for the preference.

Because although I'm not a chud fan, I don't support firing him after 1 year and replacing him with Peyton Manning's ball boy or the 49ers DL coach.

Ah, okay, so you're arguing against the firing. That makes sense to me. I thought you were arguing that Chud was better. I think those are two different arguments. Chud might be better, I don't know. I didn't really see anything from him at all anywhere (even before this past season) that I thought showed anything obviously positive. I don't think he should have been hired in the first place.

But that's not what you're saying. You're saying you don't think he should have been fired after just one year. I'm not going to argue with that. I'm not sure year two or three would have been any better, because I think he was in over his head, but I can't know that for sure.

I agree! im not saying chud was the next great coach however if you cant find someone better then what there looking at your takeing a step bACKWARDS. Im not impressed with anyone they talked to gase- i think is more manning -mcdaniels- look what he did his last head coach job sucked pissed off players the other guys are pretty much nobodys. guess maybe quinn with a good OC is best we can hope for.

I would have been OK with the firing more so if we didn't decide we were going to interview unproven position coaches...and wait until February to do it.

Right after Coach Chud was fired I was talking to a friend of mine about who the new coach of the Browns might be, and he mentioned Jim Tomsula to me. I had never heard of him, but did some digging and liked what I was able to learn about him. He just might be one of those guys who, if given the chance at the big chair, will do well and people will say "wow, I didn't see that coming". The Browns are due for something good like that to happen IMHO.

I don't see his possible consideration as "the bottom of the bucket"...I see it as thinking "outside the box", and that kind of thinking could possibly unearth a gem.

Although my faith that upper management can make the right choice on who to hire is not that high, from what they have showed me so far....I am willing to be pleasantly surprised by them. *crosses fingers* Even an old blind hog can find an acorn every now and then!!!

In his one game as interim coach in 2010, the Niners blew out Arizona 38-7.

                  That's right ... undefeated.

With him at coach and Hoyer as QB ... we'd never lose!

I am not taking as much offense to the length of time it is taking to get a HC for this team as a lot of people are. They must think that hiring an executive position job that pays 4-5 million a year is just a snap of the fingers.

I interviewed for an executive position lately....as an executive director of a non-profit. Its pay was in the high 5 figures (i.e. under 100K).

I have some other direct/indirect connections with this group and also had a frank talk with the interviewers about their hiringr process which, among other things was:

                    A. Hiring a search firm to do their interviews.

                    B. Interviewing approx. 35 candidates.

                    C. Eliminating those down to 5-6.

                    D. Finally making a decision.

This position has been available since about the end of October. It is still not filled. These people are taking their time and trying to do it right.

I did not make the cut because my background does not include finance/managerial experience which is what they said they were looking for. I figured that going in, but it was worth a shot anyway.

Nevertheless, if this group is going to be thourough and take 4 months to hire for about an 80-90K job, why shouldn't the Browns be as thourough to hire a 4-5 million dollar job.

I agree with taking your time and doing it right.

Theoretically, Gipper, that approach makes sense. However, if you were to interview for a similar position (to the one for which you interviewed) with other organizations, the hiring process would probably take a similar amount of time. There might be the occasional exception, but every one of those other organizations wouldn't be doing their hiring in a matter of days while this one was taking months. The concern with the Browns HC search (as it applies to "taking their time", not to "waiting for someone who can't fully interview yet") is that none of the other teams looking for a HC took this approach. That leads us to one of three possibilities: (1) It is better to do it fast, and the Browns are wrong; (2) It is better to do it slow, and the Browns are the ONLY ones who are right; (3) It doesn't matter how fast you do it/it could be done either way, in which case, the time the Browns are taking is just more time the HC is not spending getting ready to run this team.

Given the Browns history, it is not hard to imagine it is #1. It seems both historically unlikely and unlikely from a probability sense that it is #2. And #3 also doesn't really work in the favor of the Browns.

I hope if they hire him he is the best ever. I also appreciate your attempt to be optimistic. Don't delude yourself though. It Tomsula is they guy it is NOT because they were thinking outside the box.

                          Right now... I'm rooting for...

                          Dan Quinn as HC

                          Mike Munchak as OC

Former D-Line coach and former O-Line coach, both extraordinary as position coaches in those spots... sounds good to me. Where are football games won/lost? In the trenches. I'd love to see these two team up and coach in Cleveland...

It was pretty widely acknowledged, both at the time and after his dismissal, that he held the team together after TR was traded away. That was no small task. If you did not see that, you did not want to see it.

Mike is a fine position coach... I think it speaks volumes that his fall-back to the Browns HC job is the Steeler OL position. It also speaks volumes about both organizations.
