  • Yeah. Pick on somebody your own size, oh wait- aren't whales are an endangered species?

Have some respect, Gip's paid his dues. You, on the other hand... 😵

    Gipper be like:

"DON'T YOU EVER TALK ABOUT ME..." 🥷😠

..naw, he's has too much swag for that. You, on the other hand... 🤔 no swag. 😉

  • Gip, you're an overweight, old judge. Stick to things you know, like sitting in traffic court and being relatively unliked by most of society.

I don't participate in your trivia because I give zero fucks about who served in the Navy in 1967 and also has the middle name "Herbert". That doesn't help me (or anybody else) win football games. All that does is assure everyone that you don't get laid.

I am currently a coach. I am still a player. I also have my blog, which has gotten 10,000+ reads since I started it last month with absolutely no advertising help other than word of mouth. I also am a staff writer for another website, which gets 5x that viewership. I was offered an internship for the Atlanta Falcons based on some of the things I posted here I included in my resume. And I will be soon accepting a job with Fox Sports in Charlotte, North Carolina based on my extremely limited portfolio, which shows that I do, in fact, know what I'm talking about.

So yes, I do know more about football than you. I put my time into this. I spend my free time downloading and watching game film, not Googling what brand of underwear Fran Tarkenton wore in cold weather. I know the differences in terminology, scheme and overall philosophy between an Erhardt-Perkins offense and a Coryell offense. I know the actual reasons behind the phenomenal success of the Seahawks defense. These are the things I spend my time learning.

I used to shit on Mike about writing for bleacherreport because I was jealous, but now I finally understand what it's like to be on his end of the spectrum. It's immeasurably frustrating putting your time and energy into something and then trying to hold conversation with people who are so adamant that their ill-advised opinions are more important or correct.

Fans don't care about Bart Starr's Aunt Tilda. Sorry to break it to you.

Well, I will take your alleged credentials with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, with all that....and yet you waste your time her?. So I guess when you take that job in Charlotte you won't have time to be on here....and you will perhaps actually learn the things that fans care about.

Yea.....like I said....stuff that only players/coaches know/care about. Fans don't care about your terminology/philosophy other than in general terms.

Hell, fans could care less about whether you are teaching the Erhardt/Perkins offense from the Amelia Erhardt/Marlon Perkins.....unless maybe it is asked about in a trivia question.

No....but they do care if Tom Brady is going to approach Bart Starr's Championship and passing records.....which is the stuff I put in the trivia....if you ever paid attention.

  • Richard Sherman is a punk pussy. Joe Haden is 3x the Cornerback he is. Richard Sherman is a "wannabe" Dion Sanders, only he forgot that Dion had swagger. Sherman has just got a big mouth.

  • do you remember the 3rd down play a bit earlier that had Crabtree running a quick slant right into two waiting linebackers

only to see him stop and hesitate as Kaepernicks pass went right by crabtree.. alligator arms !!!. WHAD A puss I thought and then the big smile on his face as the

    network went to commercial? lol

SF was on their own 23 and went for it on 4th down when I think Gore caught the first down pass...

Crabtree did redeem himself later in the drive with a sideline catch though... I wanted SF to win. oh well.....

So, you proved my point. You care about shit that doesn't matter to football. That's all I was trying to say. Thank you.

I post here because I generally like posting here. I generally like the people. I generally enjoy the dialogue. But over the last month I've literally had three seperate conversations (none of them with you, I'll admit) with people who make an outlandish and I'll-informed claim, then when they are presented the stats or facts they say (ad-libbing) "I don't care about stats or facts, that doesn't matter. What matters is that I'm right because I'm right".

If you're going to make a claim, back it up with empirical research. If you don't and somebody calls you on your bullshit, then you deserve everything you get.

  • Oooh, now HERE is a discussion. First, TCPO, congrats on your successes and bright future. For the record, I do think you generally know what you're talking about, and I pay attention to your opinions.

That being said, I think the road your post leads down is a unfortunate one. Being a football expert has a few unfortunate drawbacks when it comes to public/common debate. First, it is a sport of uncertainty; no one is ever always right, and the least educated person can often be proven right over the expert. This makes it dangerous to claim expertise and to suggest that your opinion trumps all others, because it will only make people that much quicker to point out when you do end up being wrong.

The second problem is that football is so widespread and popular. The more popular and accessible a topic of discussion is, the more difficult it is to be sure that the people to whom you are speaking are not also as knowledgeable or capable as you. Let's say that you even have the best football-related accomplishments of anyone on the forums, weren't you as capable of talking/learning about football prior to those accomplishments? You didn't suddenly know everything you now know about football when you started your blog last month. So how do you know that someone else isn't just as knowledgeable as you were then or now but just hasn't pursued the measurable accomplishments that you have? You mentioned that you used to argue with someone else who wrote for a sports publication. How do you know the next you isn't in these forums somewhere?

Finally, even if you're the most knowledgeable and accomplished person in these forums when it comes to football, you should feel like the people here have something to offer you that you cannot offer yourself. Otherwise, there's little point in you frequenting these boards. I'm sure it gets frustrating for you sometimes when you feel like you are truly right here and someone else is truly wrong, but there's a nobility in not playing the "I'm the expert, and you're not" card. I happen to be a linguist, but I don't correct people's English online or suggest that my stylistic language preferences are better than anyone else's. I don't even always make an effort to write things correctly myself. Why? Because I'm not as concerned with being correct as I am with hearing what other people have to say, even when I know/think they are wrong.

In short, if you feel that you're more knowledgeable and more probably correct, then take internal satisfaction in your confidence, even if it is frustrating not to proclaim your superiority. Don't demand the deference of other posters based on the premise of your expertise.

Im just glad to have enjoyed a good game - SF came close, Wouldve loved to be on the field (who wouldnt?) listening to Crabtree mouth off...

the only thing missing was the punctuation point on Crabtree by Sherman on the field with a good blindside shot - consolation prize to remember him by all off- season!!

  • Loved this! and i am enraged by all the hatred for him. So many people who dont know jack shit about football are spewing out their opinions on what he did... calling him a thug.. and classless. HES THE BEST CORNER IN THE GAME! and not only that but he grew up in Compton, was 2nd in his hs class and then got a 4.2 gpa at Stanford! how do you not love everything about this guy! he was even smart enough to not swear on live TV! Just listen to Crabtree talk and tell me whos the thug. Sherman plays with the same passion and toughness that Brady does and I love it. I hope Joe Haden starts doing this once he starts getting actual interviews (that might take a couple years...)

    you're a complete idiot.

so he's from compton. who give's a rat's ass? he used that time when the TEAM was celebrating their win to promote himself and diminish the fact that there was a lot of other players contributing to the win.

so crabtree and sherman got beef? all you can do is go back to being street level? even though you graduated 2nd in class in HS and went to Stanford, i guess you didn't have a class to teach you respect, dignity and humility.

fuck that piece of shit. (not the player, the man).

I'm not saying I don't enjoy what people post here. I've been posting here for four or five years. I enjoy what people have to say. I credit posting on this forum with helping lead me to my chosen career path.

What I am saying is that posters here have reached an all-time critical high of being jackasses, myself included. I immediately regretted my previous post, but what I said and felt still stands true: people are so frustrated with the situation that they aren't seeing reason. And, when one tries to present a reasonable, researche post, it's often met with "stats don't matter, facts don't matter. This is the truth because I said it".

Nobody is ever right 100% of the time. Hell, if you're right 75% of the time, you're better than most analysts and professionals. But stats show trends. Prior statistical data, coupled with logical deduction and a slight bit of reaching, can be very effective in predicting and analyzing the sport of football.

But, because of the sitiuation currently presenting itself, we're seeing more and more people just throw all caution to the wind and claim absolutely ridiculous shit with no basis in fact or any sort of logical reasoning. That makes this place a joke.

I know that we all want to see the local hometown hero come in and be the franchise QB to sweep this team off its feet, but this is the real world. A situation like that rarely presents itself. Kurt Warners are few and far between.

It's becoming a fucking two party system in here: those that want a QB and those that don't. People are choosing sides not because of how the feel on the matter but by which poster is on what side of the issue.

I know we're all so afraid to spend these valued first round picks on players because we'd rather trade them back year after year until we have 32 first round picks in 2029.

Sorry to break it to a lot of you but that's what the first round is there for- to take gamechanging players.

  • I agree (with all of it, I think).

Oh, and statistics can be manipulated and used selectively. I work in a theory and research field as well (Cognitive Linguistics), so I completely appreciate research, evidence, trends, extrapolation, etc. They are infinitely more useful than unfounded opinions. That being said, outside of the world of academia (and, unfortunately, sometimes inside the world of academia), people tend to select and manipulate statistical data that supports their predetermined points. Look at the running thing that we all argued today. There is no denying that the only two teams who ran more often than they passed were both in the NFC championship game, yet that debate went on for hours today/yesterday.

But let's put that aside. Here's a more entertaining manipulation of a statistic. I don't remember what year it was, but one year, while I lived in Maryland (outside of DC) there was a publication that stated that alcohol was present in 46% of all fatal traffic accidents in Maryland. Through a certain line of logic you could use that statistic to support the claim that you are more likely to be involved in a fatal traffic accident if you're sober than if you're drunk, so it makes more sense to drive drunk.

The point is, statistics are great, but they don't always definitively resolve debates. Sometimes there is no real resolution, and the only option is conversation and conjecture.

  • when's the last time belichick picked in the top ten? but yet he continues to make it to championship games with people who just crawled out the Y.

good coaching, good owner. can't hurt.

Why bother with such a hypothetical. Why not just ask: would you trade your wife for Kaley Cuoco. Silly to even bother.

Why spend hours on useless trivia questions that only three people end up answering?

At least this is about roster management and current NFL players. Stop being a dickbag.

I enjoy the trivia even though I rarely answer.

He cared enough to respond publicly about it so obviously the organization or his 'haters' got to him. Also, plenty of sports people across the board have been saying the same thing I've said here. Pete Carroll on a radio show said in a different way what I said here. It's not a crazy concept. I could literally care less in the long run about this, but I just hope he clears it up moving forward. I actually like Sherman and respect how he plays against rules basically all against CB's in the NFL.

The last thing I'll say about this whole thing is there's a gigantic difference between confidence and humility. Sherman has all confidence in the world and I applaud him for that.

I doubt "haters" got to him. More like his PR person did.

    People are just pussies nowadays.

People are pussies nowadays. But no sane person could say that Sherman had a good interview with Erin Andrews. You can be fired up without be a total douchebag.

  • Amen, MikToxic.

Also, I've given some more thought to what TCPO was saying about people arguing illogically. I haven't experienced that too much, as I've not been here as long (or it just hasn't bothered me, because I've just dismissed it). However, I do notice that people don't really pay attention to what other people's arguments actually are. Not to re-ignite any old (or current) arguments, but here are some examples I can think of:

Stance: "We don't actually know that the Indy pick will be beneficial yet."

Not-Paying-Attention Response (NPAR): "Richardson's yards per carry stat was low!"

Stance: "A QB picked in the first round is not automatically a franchise QB"

NPAR: "Franchise QBs are good for teams!"

Stance: "Trading up probably would not be worth it for the Browns"

NPAR: "We do too need a QB!"

Stance: "Chud probably shouldn't have been hired in the first place."

NPAR: "A HC should not be fired after one year!"

Stance: "If a team can't find a franchise QB, there may be other options for improving a team until that QB is found."

NPAR: "We should too draft a QB!"

In my mind, if we all read a little closer and opened up our minds a little more instead of immediately embracing an oppositional or defensive stance, these arguments (which often eventually find a common ground eventually) could be a lot shorter and more amicable.

And that little guy named Tom Brady.

He made it to the AFC Chamiponship despite losing his top two receiving targets.

    Quarterbacks made WR's better.

  • Off topic but on the subject of "love this" how freakin awesome was John Fox in calling that rub play after Belichick had Edelman take out DRC Fox comes back on the next series and runs the same shit and has Welker flatten Talib.

Then Belichick is in the presser bitching about how Welker should get fined ... was lmao love it.

  • LOL, TCPO. Yep, all we need us is a Tom Brady, then. Why didn't we think of that? We should have done this years ago. Now, let's see, where do we get us a Tom Brady....?

Exactly what I've been trying to say the whole time.

Nothing says I'm important more than someone yelling I'm important on The Browns Board.
