Mike Pettine Time?

The Browns Board

  • Grossi tweeted about 30 minutes ago that the Browns were expected to pop the question to Pettine tonight, which means it's likely it won't happen.

Even still, I jumped the gun and did a write up on the guy. There's some interesting facts about his defense and what he could bring to the team.

Talk on SportsCenter as I type this that final contract terms are being hammered out with Pettine... and that Josh McD turned us down.. again...

Sentiment seems to be that while a good hire, Pettine does not seem to be what our FO really wanted, i.e., an Offense oriented HC.

    Smells like panic...

Nice early take, but I'm not seeing the importance of the Tackle total for comparing the teams.

    1) I was not a huge fan of (Shurmur), but I also think he deserved another year.

The above is grounds for a piss-test...

We had an anemic offense and an awful special teams that allowed short fields to many teams.

Then he'll feel right at home in Cleveland...

LOL, I heard the Stooges are offering Pettine an eight game contract, with an option for another eight.

    Whose option?

I agree. Bill Belicheck let a Mangini led Browns team score 34 points on them in a terrible loss.

    That means Mangini>Belicheck

So now Pettine is Belicheck? Fucking hell...Don't get me wrong, if he is our coach, I want him to succeed. Let's just be honest, he was our 6th choice after not being able to grab anyone else and not anoint him as something great coming from a 6-10 team with a mediocre defense that he ran last year.

I was inferring don't judge a guy based on one game.

Ugh he forgot the pink font.

The other top candidates sucked worse anyway IMO.

The Bill's defense blew away Horton's too.

They suffered from the same QB carousel and lousy special teams we did, not a bad defense.

Horton is over-hyped, to say the least. I'm glad he's gone.

How can you say Horton was over-hyped? Correct me if I'm wrong but was anyone predicting that in one year our new defense would pee all over the 85 bears or the steel curtain from the 70's? Was that what everyone was expecting? I'm sorry but can you please explain how Horton failed after just one year? How can you be glad that we're turning the scheme over.................again

How about the fact that he was labeled as one of the next "great" defensive coordinators after what he did in Arizona, yet the Cardinals actually did better this season without him there and finished ahead of the Browns in overall defense.

Or the fact that we have a stable of pass rushing specialists but are mired in the middle of the league in sacks.

Or the fact that our defense has made minimal, at best, improvements in many key statistics.

Or the fact that we had nearly the worst fourth quarter and redzone defense in the entire NFL.

I think people expected a little more from him than that.

And we're not changing schemes so that, like the rest of your post, is erroneous.

Agreed, but let's also mention the absolutely LOUSY tackling & also awful 3rd down D!

    Mike!

  • Our D is the reason we lost some games single handedly this year.

We can't even use the "but if we had good QB play this year"

JC had a few really solid games that we lost this year.

  • Hmmm... I don't know if I'd say the D lost us some games. I haven't gone back and looked,... maybe they did? I might be wrong. But if you're referring to some of those games in which we were ahead and kept giving the ball back to the other team without running much time off the clock, I don't think we can hang that solely on the D...

Definitely not solely, but a game winning NE drive hurt among others I can't specifically remember.

Really there's probably 3 games that the QB played very well and we lost, indicating a good QB will not make us instant super bowl contenders as some seem to think.

  • Yeah, this is the kind of stuff I thought you meant. Prior to 1:01 left in the 4th quarter, the Browns Defense had given up 21 points in that game, and that was only after already giving up a late 4th quarter TD. Not even all of the Top 10 defenses in the league (in pts allowed per game) gave up less than 21 points per game in the 2013 regular season. So, while the Browns Defense DID make some major mistakes up to that point in the game (particularly in previous 4th quarter TD drive), they'd actually done pretty well containing a playoff team's offense up to that point.

Everything changed with 1:01 left in the 4th quarter when the Browns special teams failed to recover an onside kick. Had the Browns gotten the ball back at 1:01 after the New England TD like they should have, they could have run the remaining minute off the clock, and Brady wouldn't have gotten another shot at a game-winning TD drive. But, they didn't. Special teams failed to get control of the ball, and THEN the Browns defense failed to stop the New England offense again.

Don't get me wrong. The Browns offense did NOT play well in those last few minutes, they definitely gave up two TDs very quickly, and they made some huge mistakes that made those TD drives possible for NE. They are not blameless AT ALL. In fact, I'm fine with the statement that they were primarily to blame.

However, special teams DID give the ball back to Tom Brady on the Cleveland side of the field, which made it possible for New England to score another touchdown despite the fact that the Browns should have been able to just run out the clock for the win.

The Browns defense had an interception, a fumble recovery, and 4 sacks in that game, and they held New England to a lower 3rd down conversion percentage than the Browns offense had. And, again, prior to New England recovering the onside kick with 1:01 left, they had given up less than the league average of points given up per game to a playoff team.

Admittedly, the Browns defense performed terribly in the final two drives of that game. No one would argue that. However, I can't look back at that game and say without a conversational asterisk that the Browns defense lost that game for them. Had special teams recovered the kick with 1:01 left and not given the ball back to Brady on the Browns side of the field, that game was most-likely a win for the Browns.

Yea I do think coaching was a problem all year round too. Not just time management but an atrocious special teams, a defense that couldn't stop a screen pass, an offense that ran 1 time in the 2nd half with the lead.

    Hopefully greener pasturea ahead regardless.
