Pettine Said the Magic Words!
-
If you watch the presser with Pettine, starting at about 7:35, he begins to say something that I've been screaming since Chud arrived. It is summed up in these (Pettine's) words: "You never fit your players to your system; you fit your system to your players". I cannot count for you the number of times I said that (online and off) while Chud was here, and I love that Pettine is saying it now.
If you're a failed O-line coordinator, I give ZERO FUCKS what you think YOUR system is or should be. You're a goddamn football coach with a football team right in front of you. Figure out what it can and cannot do well, and start with that. If you want to add to or alter that along the way, fine. But don't waste whole seasons complaining that you don't have the people to make your system work and that you can't do anything at all with the team until you do. Don't throw the ball more than any other team in the league and then blame the fact that you didn't improve the team on the fact that you didn't have a QB. I don't care what system gives you the warm fuzzies while you're in the shower or in bed at night. I care about what you can do with the resources you currently have and can quickly obtain.

Of course that statement could also be interpreted as: "I will bend my will to appease Lombardi and I will let him dictate to me what kind of game I will run to satisfy the whims of whatever personell choices he makes".
Or, in other words: I will try to make the best of whatever this Schmo gives me.

Until he does what he preach, it's all BS for now so he can get the job.

Gipper,
In my mind, even "satisfying the whims of whatever personnel choices Lombardi makes" is preferable to "sitting here and not accomplishing anything because I don't have exactly what I want."
In an ideal world, it would be nice if we could get a coach who knew exactly what he was doing and who could immediately acquire all the players he needed to fit his really effective system. Sure, that would be great.
When you're a new coach with limited personnel decision-making power, though, you're faced with two choices. You can try to force your square system onto a roster with round personnel and accomplish nothing until you get the square personnel you require, or you can try to figure out how to best use your round personnel and improve on that over time. I'm a fan of the second style.

Yes, that is preferable, and I hope that is what Pettine is essentially saying......but, it is still open to that other interpretation. Even if it is, that may be OK because it means Pettine is saying "I will try to make chicken salad out of whatever chicken shit you feed me".

Part of makes a great coach (and any other profession for that matter) is their ability to work with people that are not a perfect compliment to them or their ways. Because the world around you is never perfect. And that can be a good thing. If any one guy has all the power and the rest are just yes men around him, they'd better be a genius at every aspect of football, or things will go wrong. (Jerry Jones) Getting challenged and receiving feedback from those around you is hugely benefical. Better to have someone who has an open mind, seeing different viewpoints from others, can admit when they are wrong and not afraid to ask when they need help. Pettine has already addressed issues like this. He admitted he is defensive minded and will take care in getting the right OC, working with a potentially new QB from this year's draft. He did comment on how he was a HS quarterback too, so it appears he's going to challenge his assistants right back.
I don't think Haslam will get too involved. I don't know about Banner and Lombardi. But Pettine seems adaptive yet he'll push for ideas, personnel, and players he thinks are best. Any pushing from the FO hopefully will be countered with "Ok I listened to your points, now you listen to mine."

I like his interview overall and he certainly is a likeable guy. I am now a supporter for sure but a cautious one. There was one comment in the presser I thought was a bit odd. He was asked if he was given control and final say on players. His answer was "we are still working out the details on that". Seems to me to be the kind of detail one would work out ahead of accepting a job like this.

I think he was told he has a little say but lombardi has majority and final say who we try to get and then Banner sees how the money will work. He might be like a little kid asking for christmas presents that his parents can't afford and aren't willing to buy for him. like a poor child.

so does that mean we'll go back to the 4-3? cuz that's the way our talent lines up best to be on D?
-
What would we do with mingo in a 4-3? He'd have to be a 3rd down spot edge rusher unless we could coach him up to play like Von Miller does in Denvers 4-3.
ok, i know jack about x's and o's, what the defense we ran before chud got here? didn't sheard play DE? and we had another DE on the other side?
i don't know if it's the 4-3, the 3-4 or the 711 the defense where we could have mingo sheard and clowney reeking havoc on the QB?
-
Another thing he said that I liked...it was when someone touched on Chud and the situation...he said "I bet on myself".
Fuck'n A Right.
-
To be honest never thoght about it like that. Great post cow

Hey, thanks, KFP!

Certainly would seem that way. We shall see.
i like this hire a lot more than the chud hire for sure.
Pettine certainly came off "stronger" than Chud ever did, but time will tell.
There was one comment in the presser I thought was a bit odd. He was asked if he was given control and final say on players.
The exact comment concerned "final roster", which is different. The fact that he did not get it before accepting likely means that he ain't getting it. Also likely is that not having roster control was the deal breaker with other "candidates".

Exactly. I'm going to let Banner and Lobotomy deal me a losing hand , tell me to make shineola out of shit, and fire me after a year. Hell I don't care, the Stooges gave me a guaranteed 4 year contract. What could be better than sitting on my ass for 3 years collecting a paycheck from Haslam for doing nothing? Hell, he's already paying 2 coaches this year for doing nothing, why not 3 next year?

LOL...
Obviously giving up roster control was not desirable, but not a deal breaker... at least not for Pettine.
Was it because Pettine wanted desperately to be a HC? Even for the Browns? No doubt about it. But nothing I have seen of/ heard from him says he's just in it for the $$$.
He looks to me like a guy who cannot stand losing. So the only thing I can figure is that he feels he can win in spite of any roster decisions the FO makes that he might disagree with.
