So today Tony Grossi was being asked about any of the players being on the bubble now that the witch is dead. Said he didn't think Mingo or Krueger were in trouble because the new coaching staff sees them as an intregal part of the defense but that Brian Hoyer may not be a part of their inner circle. He was Banbardis guy right?

    That would be a shame.

      Lombardi was/is big on him.

I wouldn't worry about him. He's currently the best QB on the roster and reportedly Pettine likes him.

He may not start but I think he'll get a chance to compete for the spot. He should be safe as at least the #2 QB.

That would suck but I would hope at the end of the day they would still evaluate talent and do the right thing. He isnt being paid that much and surely they see him as at least a value as a backup?

yep. unless we draft 3 rookie QBs and have them 1, 2 and 3, you'd think hoyer will be there somewhere, maybe campbell too.

weeds has got to go. i would get rid of kreuger and draft clowney BUT how much do we already owe guys that are now gone, including lombardi and banner?

hell i think we're still paying mangini.

I don't think that there will be the prejudice in favor of Hoyer that came when Lombardi was here, but Hoyer will be evaluated fully and fairly imo and will be given a decent shot.

I am still in favor of whomever the Browns draft high at QB (that is still an assumption) should be given a learning period on the bench. Maybe as short as half a year, but still I think that is best. So we will need a Hoyer/Campbell/Weeden....whoever (veteran FA?) to show the newbie the ropes.

Yeah, I don't think there are any worries there :

β€œI think he’s a winner,” Pettine said of Hoyer, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. β€œI think the intangibles with Brian are off the charts. I think he’s a football junkie and I think you can tell he loves the game. He came from a system where he learned from the best in the game and that showed on the field. A lot of people based on his background kind of fall asleep on him a little bit.

β€œI think he’s a winning quarterback in this league.”

Well of course the glaring problems with that scenario are first, that a quarterback taken with the fourth selection of the draft (whether or not he's a mid 3rd round Talent) is the heir apparent. No matter what anybody says he will be expected to be Peyton Manning by the third game. Second, a fair shot to compete in training camp hasn't been much of a factor. Brandon Weeden looks great at practice and in preseason.

Third, unless Farmer pleads his case, the coaching staff is going to want their guy.

I heard that yesterday, buried within all the FO change stuff.

I hate to say this, but I think we should hang on to Weeden and have him duke it out for a spot in Pre-Season.

If he doesn't make it, fine, but he can at least play (though badly) . . . and with the way we seem to go through QB's you never know.

I know, he's bad, but this will be his third year and just maybe he catches just the tiniest sliver of a clue to at least hold us through a game if it comes to that.

We're on the hook for two more years with him anyway, so if we can get some value out of him all the better.

I would imagine Hoyer is still the leading candidate to compete with/ back up the guy we draft.

Lombardi / Chud gave him a shot and he made the most out of it. I doubt Farmer/Petine are feeling like they have to bring in another established QB, Hoyer seems a good fit to run Shannys offense.

It's not like we were going to build around him. I think he is in the mix either way.

I agree wholeheartedly. The Browns will get nothing in trade. May as well use the resources we have...and what we are paying for. Put him in there to at least give an effort.....even if it is for competing for the #3QB spot.
