Height of all Super Bowl QBs
-
Odd thing here: I have always thought the Roger Staubach was much shorter than John Elway.....but they are the same height.
-
I dont think this is fair....Ive never seen a QB under 6'2" drafted in the first round. I sure as hell havent seen a player like him before. His skill set is so unique that its impossible to compare him to anyone. Who's the last short QB other than Brees and Wilson to be given a shot in the NFL? I dont think pointing out how it hasnt happened often, is a negative at all towards Manziel, especially when two guys have recently been able to overcome it.
-
Just another thing I note compiling this:
There are 5 Joes that started the SB: Namath/Kapp/Montana/Flacco/Theisman
2 Jims: Kelly/McMahon
2 Johns: Elway/Unitas
2 Steves: Young/McNair

It is fair to state facts. These are the facts about the height of the QBs that started Super Bowls.
Have there been QBs under 6' who were drafted in the first round. I suspect there have been. I will leave it to you to do that research.
Have I ever seen a player like him before? Yes, on numerous occasions I have seen QBs perform the way he has.....in college.
Not necessarily in the pros though....because we don't know what kind of a pro QB he will be.
Hell, there was one short QB that got a bum deal from the NFL: Doug Flutie. If anyone is a model for your boy it is Flutie...who could play in the NFL fairly well.....though he certainly was not elite or anything. Except in Canada.
As far as this being a negative toward Manziel, I don't know, you tell me. I never claimed anything of the sort. I just gave the facts.
Apparently you must think it is a negative.
Me: I prefer to go with the odds:
There have bee 19 QBs 6'4" or taller that have started the SB.
There have been 13 QBs 6'3 to start a SB.
There have been 13 QBs 6'2 to start a SB.
There have only been 12 QBs 6'1" or shorter to start.
It is just another factor to consider, and the odds are better with a taller QB.
(but certainly height isn't all that matters. Look at Weeden)

You missed Fran Tarkenton
He is 6'0" and started 3 superbowls

You are right. I had him written down but forgot to type him in. I will correct it.

Ok well why even post the topic if not to point out the odds Manziel's against? Found this article on the subject, pretty interesting. http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/content/tall-task-does-height-matter-for-nfl-quarterbacks/22067/

You are right. That is exactly why I posted this. To show that we have no business drafting a Munchkin at QB. Which one is Johnny:

I'm surprised Unitas was only 6'1, he seemed taller.
Maziel measured 5'11' and 3/4. I'm sure those guys listed at 6' were all about the same. so that is ten SB appearances by QBs 6' or less, including the reigning champion.
Wish he was 6'3. But would still draft him at 5'11 3/4 ... Although I like bridgewater better.

Then we could also list Quarterback failures by height. DA, Weedone, etc.

We look forward to your report on that.
I think Brock Osweiler at 6'8" is one of the tallest QBs ever in the league. Backup to Peyton in Denver.

Brock Osweiler had the strangest throwing motion in college....just awkward. But he did alright, not as much arm strength as you'd think. We look forward to your report on that.

Has Osweiler even ever played in a game?

Those who blindly follow the Status Quo deserve to dwell in it.
why are you so fuckin fixated on manziel?
shouldn't you just care that we have a solid draft? build the team correctly?
JF has got to be one of the biggest first round QB gambles in history. i really doubt farmer is going to stake a claim to being the first first year GM that pulls the strings on the biggest bust of all times ala ryan leaf. not saying that manziel will bust, (it's probably a better bet that he will get laid out) it's just the thought of it that has to make farmer think about other options.
so what you are saying is you won't be happy with any other pick outside of JF?
so your status quo is johnny manziel or nothing.
ladies and gentlemen: the next PoG.

Being taller only helps. Therefore, Manziel being less than 6' hurts him. There's no debate about it IMO.
There's a lot of other factors of course, but just because Wilson is 5'11 and good doesn't mean Manziel will be.
I wouldn't hate Manziel, but I think there's a lot better choices @ #4.
I think Osweiller threw a few passes at the end of last years season in a garbage game against KC. Didn't really pay attention though.

This whole argument that qb height is directly proportional to their ability to succeed in the modern NFL is fallacious. Of course you have this massive list of six foot plus qbs dominating the last 90 plus years because that has been the standard for a very long time. Coaches and collegiate schools were rarely considering grooming shorter quarterbacks because that went against the staus quo and the established physical specifications for being a quarterback. In modern football (the past decade or so) we are slowly seeing a change in this perception and coaches/front offices/colleges are more and more beginning to groom smaller, mobile, athletic quarterbacks. The perception that height was a must to play quarterback is slowly being challenged and I guarantee in two or three decades the makeup of the league's 32 starting quarterbacks will be dramatically different. As many have said Wilson (and brees) have opened the door to smaller, more compact qbs being considered for professional football.
-
It is not fallacy.
The stats and history are good examples of it. The risk of Manziel failing is very very high. Anyone that says otherwise don't understand the game in the professional level.
Height is an advantage. There's no debate about this.
With every Wilson and Brees, the great majority of them have failed while LOOKING GREAT in college too. Also, Wilson plays in a team that has one of the BEST defense and running game in the league. There's only 1 or maybe 2 other team in the league that's almost an exact replica of Seattle…that's SF…and Carolina. When you are dealing with a top 5 pick, you better be DAMN sure the dude doesn't have a lot of question marks.
