  • WPB...... I am under the impression that Only Trading Anderson will the Browns NOT have to pay the 5 million.....by March 1

If the Browns release or trade him they will take a $5M hit

  • They will take a hit no matter what if they trade him or cut him. Because that will make them take the hit of the remaining amount of his signing bonus, which was spread over the life of the contract.

Here is the issue...it is more complicated than most think.

He is due a $5M bonus on March 1. Everyone keeps thinking that the BONUS is guaranteed...but that is not the case.

Only PART of that bunus is guaranteed...The rest of the guarantee is part of the 2009/2010 salaries.

    Basically it goes as follows:(FIXED)

If we RELEASE him BEFORE March 1st we will end up having $4.75M go against the cap for 2009/2010 guarantees.

If we RELEASE him AFTER March 1st we take the $5M bonus AND the remaining guarantees for 2009/2010 (about $4.75M)

If we TRADE him BEFORE March 1st...we take a $4.75M hit from 2009/2010 guarantees.

If we TRADE him AFTER March 1st...we take the $5M hit from the bonus PLUS the remaing hit for 2009/2010 (about $4.75M).

If we KEEP him we take a $5M hit for the bonus PLUS the $1.45M for his salary...and then still owe him guarantees for 2010 after the season (over $7M salary)...and a $2M bonus next March 1st.

  • Basically, chances are if he is here after March 1st...he is likely to stay unless we get a KILLER trade offer.

  • peek needs to be gone. if can't stay on the field, he can't pick up a check. paying people who don't ever play is ridiculous.

unfortunately, the same applies to jurevicius. i'm in no way confident he can come back. would i like him to? yes. but that's not reality. the reality is his knees aren't strong enough to play football anymore. it's in his best interest, and the team's best interest, for him to retire. i think the same might also apply to tucker, unfortunately, which doesn't bode well for our o-line.

lewis' salary is obscene. get him gone. now. i don't care if he catches on somewhere else and has a few decent games. enough is enough with the guy. he didn't have a single hundred yard game all season and he'll cost how much to keep next year when he's proven to be nothing but ineffective? done.

stallworth and corey williams are interesting cases. they're both being paid way too much for what they produce, but there's likely not a better option available unless we're going to pay someone else the same kind of money. i'd cut stallworth and keep williams because we'd have no defensive ends without him and we can likely find a serviceable WR in FA, whether it be housh (who's better than just serviceable), antonio bryant or bryant johnson. the only guy in FA that we could bring in to replace williams would be chris canty, and if we cut williams and bring him in, we still only have one DE. and, on top of it, we should go after canty anyway.

then we still have to sign jones, travis daniels, wright, holly, adams and steptoe. i doubt we have the room to make any large moves in FA; canty could be our biggest signing this off-season, but he'd be a solid pickup for us.

  • um... we won't be cutting Williams. To suggest as much is silly.

  • Still unclear about DA's roster bonus. According to Tony Grossi, a pre-March 1 trade would allow us to pass on the $5M roster bonus to the team he's traded to. We'd still have a $4.67M cap charge from his original $7M signing bonus, but we wouldn't have to fork out an additional $5M.

    .

    Correct..I guess I wasn't clear enough.

If we trade him BEFORE March 1st...we get the guarantee hit of nearly $5M...but NOT the bonus.

If we trade him AFTER March 1st...we get hit with the guarantee AND the $5M bonus...which is why I said I highly doubt we trade him if he is hear AFTER March 1st.

i know, his contract just sucks. his cap number in 2009 is essentially what richard seymour's was in 2008 (8.23 for williams vs. 8.39 for seymour).

  • What is stated here is the cap hit if they remain on our team for 2009. If cut we would save that (if it isn't guaranteed). But, what you fail to note is what parts of their original contracts were defeffed over the length of the contract. That whole amount would come due as a cap hit.

For instance a player signed a 4 year contract and he was paid a $8 million bonus up front. Even though he already received the money, the NFL spreads the $8 million over the 4 years for cap purposes. So as long as he is on the team under that contract, $2 million a year would be the cap hit + his salary. If the player is cut or traded, the entire rest of that prorated bonus is applied to your cap. The only exception is if the player is cut after June 1st then it can be divided between this year and next year.

Some of the players listed above will be asked to rework their contracts so the signing bonus they receive this year won't all count against the cap this year.

  • question,, if by chance we could lets say trade da to a team needing a qb,and they had a lets say, rb or lb with a salary in the 5 mill. range ,,how does that work out ?

They don't trade contracts, only the players. The new team must accept the current contract language or re-negotiate a new one.

  • what's the point of having antwaan peek on your team? he plays in three games a year.

  • Yiddish is a language...I believe Jew is still the preferred nomenclature although it has been used in a pejorative manner throughout history...

  • mz the pussy's right about yiddish being a language, but jews were pejoratively called 'yids' for a while.

i guess you could go with semitic italian if you wanted to un-jew it, or de-jew it.

and the puerto rican riff was great, though this season of 30 rock hasn't been quite as good as the first two.
