Your Board's Top Ten
-
Comment I made in the Grossi thread made me realize I had not set down my board across positions.
As of today, 21 March, here's mine...
- Khalil Mack - OLB
- Sammy Watkins - WR
- Jake Mathews - OT
- Xavier Su'a-Filo - OG
- Eric Ebron - TE
- Justin Gilbert - CB
- Anthony Barr - OLB
- Jadaveon Clowney - DE
- Greg Robinson - OT
- Blake Bortles - QB
you've got 2 OTs, does this mean these are the players ideally you'd like to have in the draft?
then mine would be
1. mack
2. evans
3. gilbert
4. matthews
5. pryor
6. watkins
7. robinson
8. barr
9. dennard
10. storm johnson HA!
-
. Otto Graham
2. Jim Brown
3. Paul Warfield
4. Frank Gatski
5. Gene Hickerson
6. Lou Groza
7. Ozzie Newsome
8. Bobby Mitchell
9. Bill Willis
10. Len Ford
Respectfully, none of these players could play at a high level in the NFL today, with Jim Brown and Ozzie being the possible exceptions... We could continue the conversation on another thread if you want to ( a thread that does not involve a mock draft
). *Edit most of these guys would not start on the Cleveland Browns Team this year.
Sure they wouln't. Half of them are dead and the others, are all in their 60's, 70s, 80s.
But every single damn one of them would have started if "today" was the prime of their career. Maybe Groza would have to move to RT instead of LT to let JT play....but ALL of them would have been starters....on any NFL team.

HaHa well played good sir... but not even in their prime would most of them make a team, let alone start. Throw up a size chart and the difference is staggering, include the complexities of the modern game, the rule changes ect... Very few players are "timeless" JB might be the only exception now that I am looking at it...Ozzie was only 6'2 - no way could he play TE in today's NFL

Then you, sir, don't know shit from shinola when it comes to football. These guys "weighed" something less than today's players perhaps (but not OG or JB).
If they were playing today they would be playing under today's conditions. They would have had the training and nutrition of today's athletes, and in having that they would have been on perfect par for today's game.
And FYI, a lot a TEs today play at 6'2"

2 players play less than 6'2 in the NFL as a tight end, both also weighing over 245lbs (about 15-20lbs heavier than Oz)
but that is not really the point... I will concede that if the players from back in the day had the salaries (to you know play football as their only job) training, nutrition ect they would be better football players, but you can not tell me that Gene Hickerson at 6'3 243lbs would be able to compete with the Defensive players of today...the average NFL G btw is 6'5 310 lbs... you would also not be able to tell me that nutrition and training advancements would cover that gap...no way...
Also, if someone shined your shoes with shit Gip, it's because they wanted to...not because they couldn't tell the difference.

Well, by your comment....no quality....or HOF caliber player who played any time prior to like 1980 could ever play in this league because they were just too small.
....this presumes that there were guys back then that were 6'5 300 lbs. that were being denied to opportunity to play football. There just weren't.
If those guys played today, they would probably be 6'5 300 lbs.
Also, if someone shined your shoes with shit Gip, it's because they wanted to...not because they couldn't tell the difference.
Anyone but you, perhaps.

There are always exceptions Gip, but in general, yes (Id say pre 1970). If you would like me to get in to socioeconomic, race and the implications of war and how all of those impact of the opportunities for a wider pool of talent I will be happy to. However the statement of " if those guys played today, they would probably be 6'5 300lbs" tells me everything I need to know as to how open you are to having an actual conversation about this. So I am going to agree to disagree on this with you, and that is ok , I agree with more of what you say on these boards than I don't so any statement of not knowing anything about football is more indicative of someone who thinks they have it all figured out and everyone else is wrong, and not someone I am going to argue with. If you want do want to continue the conversation, which is way more fun (to me at least) than talking about Johnny Manzel for the 20th time, in box me or start we can start new discussion thread. I would love to get others opinions on this.
All in all they were great players and I agree with your sentiment of your original post, lets draft some winners.
Go Browns.

What are you seeing in Xavier Su'a-Filo that I am not (not being chirpy, he just never jumped out) ?
Agile, quicker than yankey. Gets to the second level fast. Great pass protector.
He fits a zone scheme pretty perfectly IMO.
#4 overall talent in the draft I think not, but he's my favorite guard.
