Best Worst Defenses of All time

The Browns Board

  • There was a thread that talked about the fact that NONE of the Top 10 offenses of all time won the Super Bowl.

I did some checking and I am referring you to this website:

    http://www.footballperspective.com/the-best-scoring-defenses-in-nfl-history/

It lists the Top 25 best defenses of all time...plus the 25 all time worst defenses of all time, based on certain complex formulas that are applied

You can look at it, but brief notes on it:

    A. They say the best defense ever was the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

    B. 7 of these top 25 won titles (pre and post Super Bowl)

    C. The 2000 Ravens did NOT make the Top 25...odd, but the 2006 Ravens did.

    D. Both the 2010 Packers and 2010 Steelers made the list. (but, again, oddly the 2005 Steelers did not.

    E. Only the 1975 team of the Steel Curtain Dynasty made the list.

    F. NO Browns team made either the 25 best or 25 worst

    G. The 1981 Baltimore Colts defense per this is the worst defense of all time.

    H. The 2000 St. Louis Rams had one of the worst defenses of all time....just after the 1999 Rams had to have had one of the best offenses of all time.

    I. Those Purple People Eaters of the Vikings had two of the top 7 defenses of all time....and so did the Orange Crush Broncos defenses of the late 70s....but, of course, none of them won a Super Bowl.

    J. The 2012 and 2013 Seahawks defense both made top 25.

    K. The mid 90s Chiefs under Marty Schottenheimer made 2 of the top 25.

Moral of the story: It would not bother me to have the Browns use both of their first round picks on defense.

  • I assume the '86 Bears were on the list.

But the moral of the story has to be that champs are never made by excelling solely one side of the ball.... Yes?

  • The 2002 Buccaneers scored 21 points on defense in the Super Bowl... hard to top that one...

  • I assume the '86 Bears were on the list.

But the moral of the story has to be that champs are never made by excelling solely one side of the ball.... Yes?

You mean the '85 Bears?. Yes, they were on the list in Top 5.

But, like I said, the other defense generally considered to challenge those Bears for all time best, the 2000 Ravens, didn't make this Top 25.

Ergo, I think there must be some flaw in this sites methodology.

  • 1977 Atlanta Falcons didn't make the list either. They finished 7-7, only scored 179 points, but only allowed 129, unbelievable.

  • This definitely looks flawed to me considering the 1976 Steelers didn`t make it. 28 points scored against them in the last 9 games including 5 shutouts.
