I just showed my gamer age lol. I've been a gamer since the early 80s, so about 30 years starting with the Commodore 64. Isometric RPGs are ones that have a 3-quarters top down view. Most notable games that use this perspective are the original Fallout games, all Diablo games, and the Baldurs Gate series. It used to be these were more common than first person RPGs like Elder Scrolls, but the rise of the first person shooter influenced the rpg genre and now first person rpg is more popular.

  • No I've played all those just never associated the term isometric with them

I suppose you could call them that though I think of side scrollers when someone says two dimensional. You know what the best thing that happened to gaming is, IMHO? Kickstarter. Thanks to Kickstarter two of my favorite games series of all time are heading for a revival.

The first is Star Citizen, which is bringing back the space flight sim to gamers and is being created by the guy who made the Wing Commander and Privateer games. They've raised over 42 million dollars to create the game. This illustrates how traditional game publishers, who said this genre had no market, completely miscalculated. Thanks to Kickstarter we should start to see more variety on the digital store shelf.

The other game is being made by the creators of Baldurs Gate and Planescape Torment as a modern spiritual successor to those games. It's called Pillars of Eternity and they raised something like 4 million on Kickstarter.

  • There's still plenty of third person RPGs which are closer in spirit to those types of game. I always sort of pooh poohed those games as not real RPGs

  • Didn't bioware develop Baldur's gate? I'm surprised they would need financing from kick starter after their many recent financial successes.

Oops your right, obsidian did never winter nights 2. See I always poo-pooed the first person RPGs as shooter wannabes lol. To each their own. I think I just liked being able to create an entire party instead of just 1 character.

  • well the one thing I've noticed is that the Kinect works a hell of a lot better than it did with the 360. And it's pretty amazing how the camera looks at you sizes up your face and makes the avatar.

now if they start producing some cool games...

    WSS

  • The fact that it doesn't support 360 games is horse shit.

  • I got the One. My tag is my screen name with a space between Da Buckeye. Im a FPS and Madden guy. Titanfall is a blast. Evolve and Destiny look promising. Watch Dogs is out, Im gonna check it out soon. Best game Ive played in a long time was The Last Of Us, a PS3 exclusive.

C'mon, I'm younger than you and I know what isometric games are. Fallout 1 and 2. Landstalker.

    I'm on a PS3, btw.

  • I've just never heard the term isometric attached to them.

  • Anyone on PS3 play Madden?

  • I thought you were a pc guy.

Off topic what generation will it be before you can Internet game cross platform? I'm not buying a play station ever again but I've got friends who have one I'd like to play with

I am a PC guy, but I need my Madden fix, and I'm just getting around to playing the PS3 exclusives (finished the last of us this week - Heavy Rain, Uncharted Series, and RDR are on tap).

As for cross platform play, don't expect it in competitive FPS/RTS. I think they tried it with the game FEAR, and the consoles were absolutely destroyed by the PC players.

That's not necessarily unexpected. Anyone who builds and maintains a gaming pc is most likely to be more of a hardcore gamer than console owning folk. In a street race most times a Ford fusion will get destroyed by a porsche.

The PC didn't win because of the power under the hood, rather the keyboard+mouse was just a much more effective tool than a clunky controller.

  • I hate the keyboard mouse combo for gaming. Just feels like you're playing with a computer

  • I just bought a Colecovision, man it's awesome.

Yeah I have a console for sports games but am hardcore PC gamer otherwise. I liked Madden until I played NCAA 2014. After playing that, I find Madden unplayable. NCAA 14 is superior on so many levels it's hard to fathom both are EA games.

    How you liking BF4?
