    - Shanahan again talking about the play action being a big part of the offense. I hope you all watching a run heavy offense, it looks like we're going to run to set up the run, then throw in some play action and the occasional pocket passing. Sounds like it's designed for a run happy QB...

So you are saying there is a chance... 🙂

    Sure...

Then again nothing in "it looks like we're going to run to set up the (pass), then throw in some play action and the occasional pocket passing" screams "designed for a run happy QB" to me. What it screams for is a QB with great play action skills.

It's going to be a while until we have the chance to see what difference exists there.

OK, maybe run happy isn't what I meant. It means we're looking at 'mobile' QBs - guys who can sell the play fake and then get out in to the space quickly enough to buy themselves time to find the downfield receiver or, if there's space, pick up an easy first down. Not quite read option, but I remember Hoyer excelling at that last year (I think?) and Manziel seems very suited to it.

  • Tour-rest assured Johnny would not have gained that nickname without the internet. It made it from the practice field to the texags.com website and took off from there.

My guess is that a player as well known in his day as Jim Brown would have exploded in today's multimedia. He was that great. Will JM be that great NFL player? I don't know.

But he was that great college player and the media ran with it.

except, besides namath, manziel searched for the spotlight to help build his 'brand'. he has said in interviews what it 'took' to get to this level of celebrity.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2016339-johnny-manziel-looking-to-secure-numerous-trademarks

    http://q.usatoday.com/2014/03/21/johnny-football-is-becoming-more-than-a-nickname/

so everyone can say that a local sports announcer calling the game uttered the words 'johnny football' but there's no denying he's taken the ball and run with it.

now he can't be surprised when his celebrity status comes back to bite him in the ass when he goes out on the town to grab a cheeseburger and is mugged by 20 cameramen. then he gets upset.

i'm sure all the little fledgling actors and actresses crave the cameramen early in their career to promote themselves, then when they hit it big they scream about 'inavasion of privacy' and are schocked when TMZ mugs them outside a restaurant.

  • The whole "signing things for money" may have helped as well....

... Then doing to "show me the money sign" all the time. Basically saying "The NCAA knows it is in their best interest to ignore that whole ruke breaking thing. I'm gonna flaunt that shit. Some will call it 'moxy', 'swagger', etc. I'm the best"

Just saying, he's not exactly "Poor old JF" just trying to live his life and play football.

If only Dez Bryant was that lucky...

  • So lets get a football question out of this:

In Kevin Jones' article cited on page 1 of OTA's thread he says, "But boy, there were some throws that should have Browns fans giddy about the future of this team. In particular during a red-zone set, Manziel bootlegged hard towards the right sideline and found a streakingJordan Cameronicon-article-link.gif, all the way in the left side of the end zone."

So here is the question--Was that from the playbook or was that a creative play by JM and Cameran off the called play? Most people think sprinting the QB to the R cuts the field down to 1/3 so why would a throw to the L endzone be in the playbooK? Did the Browns ever run that play last year or did RGIII ever use it under Kyle?

  • 1st....Bleacher Report? Seriously?

2nd...yes JFF trademarked the name. Why? Because he became known as that name and if he didnt trademark the name, anyone could use it for anything. Someone could use it to associate him with something he might not want to be associated with.

It was more to protect his brand than to build it.

  • the only other player that i know of that had a brand coming into the NFL was brian bosworth.

Maybe not more, but just as much. Plus, who on here wouldn't build his brand if he could? Some need to stop acting like a bunch of envious bitches. Who here who had just signed a big deal with Nike at the age of 21 wouldn't want to be hanging at a pool party in Vegas with a bunch of bikini clad hotties and being the guy who got to give the champagne shower? Hell, I am in my 60's and would like to do that again, and tomorrow. Some might think of me as a dirty old man....news flash...the only thing that has changed is the "old" part.

If any of you say you wouldn't have done that or wouldn't do it if given the chance, you're a homo.

    We are Johnny Football.

Ok.....so what does that mean? Seriously....tell me what that means. How does the BOZ have anything to do with Johnny Football?

  • ugh.

we all know he went out to vegas. yes we all would have done the same. that's not the point.

the point is would you bitch about the media when all you've done is call the media upon yourself to promote yourself and 'your brand'.

    get it?

so if a shake a bees next, not bees will come out to sting me....right?

  • I don't even care about his vacation that much. My dislike of JF started with the NCAA violations and how he handled them. It continues now thanks to posters that think he is football Jesus

  • Some interesting little bits coming out of the interviews:

    - Manziel checked with Pettine and the appropriate people whether he was OK to Vegas; Pettine said 'have fun'

    - Gilbert's injury not serious

    - Jim O'Neill is very impressed on the DL with Rubin, Bryant, Taylor, impressed with Billy Winn and John Hughes, and also...Calvin Barnett? Never heard of the guy, but I guess we may be seeing some of him. UDFA out of Ok. State, 6-2, 347lbs.

    - Shanahan again talking about the play action being a big part of the offense. I hope you all watching a run heavy offense, it looks like we're going to run to set up the run, then throw in some play action and the occasional pocket passing. Sounds like it's designed for a run happy QB...

    - Dansby, who has been missing so far, has a slight injury that he's dealing with elsewhere, since these OTAs are voluntary. I'd rather he was there, and it seemed like Pettine wasn't happy with him not being there. But then, Pettine doesn't seem happy ever.

Edit: Originally had Kirksey as the one missing, apparently it's Dansby.

Even more that the "tidbits" it was good to hear from more coaches and players than at least I had heard from before. Foremost among these to my ear were O'Neil and Whitner.

Loved O'Neil's bit on the "How to" video where five years of Jets/Bills D is slowly being replaced by footage of Browns OTA video. And just flat loved Whitner's entire interview. Just got a feeling that our D is in very good hands.

Agree on both appraisals, but even more importantly so it seems does young Shanahan, who also gave a fine interview.

"We ask our quarterbacks to move, but the best year I had personally calling plays in our bootleg game was with Matt Schaub and he is not a very mobile QB. Sometimes when I had some more mobile guys defenses play it a little bit more. They're more scared of it so it's not there as much. You do have to have a certain ability. You have to be able to move better than most of us, but you don't necessarily have to run a 4.4 to be successful and move in the pocket."

God, I hope not. The last thing I want in a playbook is a planned redzone cross-field pass...

OK maybe if the QB ends up being the receiver. Thigpen caught one such pass at KC.

I enjoyed all the videos and my favorites were O'Neil & Whitner. The more videos I see, the more impressed I am with the unity on this Browns' Team. There is something very special being built here.
