  • I like hot dog better. What state are you in? she here you have to drive like 6 hours to get some quale and deer hunting

  • I am located in east Texas just south of Tyler. The quail around here are long gone due to pine trees and Bermuda grass. Lots of deer right here at the house but I don't care much about hunting them. Lots and lots of hogs and running them with dogs is like crack would be I think. The first time I ever ran hogs I was hooked and got me a pack of dogs. It is about as exciting as you can get.

I also hunt squirrels with a dog. To be honest I really don't care about hunting anything when a dog is not involved.

  • Any specific bread of dogs for that task.. I think my Rottweiler and 100 pound pit are useless for something like that.

  • Read it again "dude"--it is Hog Dog Mike. I have a pack of hog dogs that I use to hunt and catch wild hogs.

But he said Jerry could mess up a soup sandwich. Wouldn't everybody mess up a soup sandwich?

  • LBC Mike--I really like cur dogs which are a very old and distinct breed that have been used in Texas for about 180 years. They will do it all but are real good on rough cows and hogs. Curs come in yellow, red, cocoa, and brindle. They have a very strong bite and can take a licking and keep on ticking. Hogs have cut mine up some but it does not stop them. Mine will strike and catch. Strike means that they wind the hogs and they do not bark until they have the hog in sight then they open. You can tell by the sound of the race when they have the hog bayed solid. Some of my buddies have pits that they lead in to catch the hog and pits have no peer when it comes to catching. You have to use a break stick to get their pits off of the hog. Some people use Catahoula curs for hog dogs and we have tried them but just have found the right one yet. My best luck has been with red curs.

None of the people that I know use Rots. I would think that they cannot keep up with the cur dogs but not many can. They might be OK as a catch dog but they would not be as good as a pit. You do not want a catch dog that lets go when you are close to the bay because the hog just might get you.

Cvcanedy--yes everybody would fuck up a soup sandwich but Jerry is such an ego maniac he actually thinks that he could make it work.

  • Interesting. I think the word "cur" is pirate for dog. So it's like dog dogs. I gotta admit l misread your name too and my dumb brain kept wanting to see hot dog. I even got so far as wondering how a pack of hot dogs helped you catch wild hogs, since that would kinda be like cannibalism from the hog's perspective.

It would be a cool magician trick to make one.

  • I always thought of Cur as sort of just an Olde thyme slang for dog. As in "back you curs! Back I say!"

  • From wikipedia:

In general, modern contexts, the term Cur is a slang term for mongrel dogs with a distinct negative connotation.

Originally, however, the word "cur" referred to a certain British purpose-bred, short-tailed cattle droving dog known only from historical records, thecur dog.[1]:459460

Among dog experts, "curs" are any of several closely related North American purpose-bred treeinghounds, some of which have since achieved breed recognition.[2]

    So...I learned something new

  • Ah, me too! Now what's a treeinghound?

  • Lots of uppity people will bad mouth a cur dog when they don't know what in the hell they are talking about. They are not registered because the people that used them had no use for papers. I had two that were supposed to be registered but they were culls and I got rid of them.

Remember Ole Yeller. He was a Black Mouth Cur dog and not a lab like in the movies. Labs had not been invented yet. I raised and trained bird dogs for years before I got off on hog hunting. Cur dogs are real smart dogs and can find you in the big woods. They are the best watch dog and dogs for kids that there is. Woe be unto anybody or anything that tries to harm one of your children if you own a cur dog. They will attack and die fighting to protect their owner. The settlers used them for years to guard against indian attack. They will tree squirrel and coon.

Cows are worth so much now that some people have got to raising some real mean ass cows. You have to be careful because some will stomp the shit out of you. My hunting buddy was nearly killed by a brama cow. It takes good cur dogs to work rough stock like that. They can and do teach those mean ass cows some manners. If the ranch is big and the cows are in thick brush the only way to get them out is dogs.

  • Fucked up as a soup sandwich is something we say in Texas. Just try to imagine making a sandwich using two slices of bread and tomato soup. It is not going to work very well --hence it is fucked up worse than a soup sandwich.

I have eaten tomato sandwiches....(but not the soup). A couple of nice big...not too ripe slices of tomatos, with salt and mayo...cheese optional.

I have eaten these and my wife thinks I am crazy....like I am eating a soup sandwich. But they are good.

    Anyone else eat them?

I've not, but I just found out my stepfather-in-law is big on them. I've sliced up tomatoes fresh from the garden, put them on a plate and just put salt and pepper on them.

  • I've had tomato sandwiches before, with a bit of mayo.

Yea, see I think I got that from my mother who was raised in England, but my wife who was raised in Wisconsin thinks it is like sacrelige or something. I on the other hand never heard of anyone putting butter on their hamburgers until I met her.

Not that it is bad or anything, It was just weird for me.

But since, I have discovered this franchise called Culver's Butterburgers, and they do have some tasty burgers. They are in like Michigan/Wisconsin, Illinois. There are none around NEOhio.

I've been in TX my entire life and never heard that. I'm from San Angelo if you've ever heard of it. I'm guessing that's an east TX thing, you guys do things differently over there. Too close to Louisiana I guess
