Ben Tate

Locked The Browns Board

  • ^hit it on the head.

anyone that thinks a brown fan wants one of their rookies to fail is not thinking rational. cleveland fans have lived through monumental fails when it comes to the draft, we know and appreciate the process probably more than any other fan out there. i hope every one of our draft picks become pro-bowlers and HOFers.

the difference between a seasoned browns fan and someone who's come rushing in to declare someone an instant star has unfortunately bloomed into this ugly game of flaming one another (yeah i'm part of it too).

if both sides would turn it down a notch and look at each other's stance, it's more funny than anything. let the JF fans spout their stuff about johnny while some of us look from afar and say "prove it."

defending your favorite player is fine, just don't do it at the expense of another browns player. i haven't read anything that tate said that would have hurt manziel's feelings. you guys are going to have to take criticism about manziel because he is still unproven at this level. hell last year we had people calling haden a bum cuz he mis-judged a couple of plays.

even if manziel wins the starting job people are going to love him for the good and hate him for the bad. until he becomes consistent.

    welcome to sunday football.

Not sure what your problem is and why you are getting yourself so worked up. I guess you really care what i think...thanks, i see it as a compliment. Not sure why you need to believe i am unable to come to conclusions on my own and why that even matters in your argument. I dont think Tate feeling jealousy is that big of a deal. I think it would be human nature for a guy that has had very little in the NFL. If those same comments came from Gordan or Haden or Mingo, id put more stock into them. But coming from a guy who hasnt done much, it sounds like sour grapes.

calling out your bullshit doesn't mean I have a problem. Its obvious you do not really know what Tate said. You think he's jealous, with absolutely nothing other than a misleading headline to support your opinion. So.....the problem is you.

I'm certainly not worked up.....I'm amused at your lack of understanding of the situation. Still haven't addressed your blatant contradiction. Side step it all you want, but don't say you don't read articles then follow it up by stating you did.

  • so yeah .... Tate has been pretty awesome to the Browns community...does anyone else have any good stories or examples of players just doing cool things, I know Haden has done some great things - how about the Browns players from the 80's - 90's ?

i can't think of any off the top of my head. of course they have the 'mandatory' publicity events where they all go to a hospital or a school etc.

but what tate has done reminds me o fhaden when he was first drafted by the browns. showed up the cavs games with his browns or indian or cavs gear on. he was always out front where the cameras could see him promoting cleveland.

some of these other guys should take lessons from these guys. amazing what it could do to fan perception.

too bad an agent who gets paid millions couldn't think of setting up his players to do something like that huh?

  • Tate didnt criticize JFF. He criticized the overcoverage of JFF.

  • @mike-h said:

For some guys it's just a paycheck, and maybe some aren't interested in what fans think.

Tate strikes me as a guy like Haden, and Arian Foster (among others) who are fans and players. Those are the kind of guys who go above and beyond to get involved with fans.

I guess Josh Cribbs was to an extent, it seemed that his interaction with fans came as a reaction to the PayCribbs push from the fans

I am calm, its the rest of you guys that need to calm down. You are providing hypocritical advice. You tell me not to assume yet then you assume i think everyone wants him to fail or are jealous of him. I dont believe that at all. I think i am providing the most logical point of view. Some posters would find enjoyment in Manziel failing. Some NFL players might be jealous of the attention Manziel gets. If you think those two statements are completely off base i would that your line of thinking is not rational.

You just said here you think Tate is jealous of the attention JM is getting. Then you said some would find enjoyment in Manziel failing. What exactly did I assume? And let's not split hairs where I said "everyone" and you say "some". The point is you point to jealousy and hoping to fail when people say things less than high praises for anything JM related. And here you're off base. It's clear Tate was describing the media being annoying, not JM himself.

  • You do seem to be one of the more level headed ones here. I wouldn't get too offended by Tate's comments. We're both speculating how he really feels, but I take it he's just trying to fight the distraction that is JM getting attention to every little thing he does. (In regards to the "nothing special" comment.) Perhaps he's just adding to it where he should just ignore it. I'm not sure as I know I wouldn't be sure how to handle it. Myself I would probably ignore it as best I could and if anyone asked me questions about JM in an interview, I'd do what I could to sidestep most of those questions.

BTW I try not to go full Retard here. If I did I'd probably get more attention, say like WW, but I'm not looking for that. Just fb talk with fellow Browns fans.

  • so yeah .... Tate has been pretty awesome to the Browns community...does anyone else have any good stories or examples of players just doing cool things, I know Haden has done some great things - how about the Browns players from the 80's - 90's ?

I know Ozzie won the NFL Man of the Year award somewhere in that time period. Earlier I would expect Calvin Hill was one of the more active players during his final playing days and then his staff days with us.

Sheard was the team's Walter Peyton award nominee this past season.

  • It would be nice if people would actually READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE before they start blasting away.

Yes, Tate more or less said that he wasn't so sure that someone who has yet to play a down in the NFL

    deserves so much attention.

    But then he says:

"It's just as a player I know that I would get tired if people were constantly monitoring if I picked my nose, if I spit to the left or right," Tate said. "I mean, it's annoying. He's a human being. He's a great football player so I understand why he gets some of the constant media attention. At the same time I just figure at this stage he's tired of it and he wants to come in here and do his job and try to win the starting quarterback position."

Yeah, he's really bashing the kid.

    Get a grip, folks.

I don't think he's consciously intending to bash Manziel either. He may even think that his heart is in the right place. His head however is a different story. He suffers a bit from foot in mouth syndrome. What he is saying in general doesn't need to be said by him. I highly doubt any media folks will care enough about his opinion to stop following Manziel. Also, Manziel is only about 10 times more media savvy and experienced than Tate and can probably handle his own issues with the media.

He tries to cover by making it sound like he's calling out the media, but this isn't convincing. First, he's using the same media he claims to be calling out to grab headlines for himself. Second, he knows like everyone else that Johnny Manziel is as responsible as the media for creating the brand.

The reality is that Johnny Manziel is a celebrity quarterback if there ever was one and we all know this. Some can disagree with it; but it is, what it is. What Ben is saying basically boils down to "I don't understand why this guy gets all the attention when he's just a rookie" In other words, he doesn't like the attention he's getting. In other words, there's some envy there.

I'm happy that Ben Tate is a Brown, but I'm concerned that he learned some bad habits sitting behind Arian Foster. Hopefully, he can focus on the positive contributions that he can continue to make to the team and the city and leave the other devisive noise behind.

  • until he steps on the field when it counts or lights it up in TC the JF celebrity is dimming everyday. and it's a good thing for all involved w/o knocking the guy. the constant story on espn of nfl network no matter how small just to fill some time is just stupid at this point. let the kid learn. if he is what everybody say he is, great. if he is actually human like the rest of us, give him a second to breath.

I'm a little surprised. In reading some of your posts, you seem to be a pretty insightful and articulate fellow. I thought you would appreciate the analysis and respond with something more substantive.

  • I've been really impressed with Manziels media savvy. Truth is he probably doesn't need Ben Tate to stick up for him. CBD even mentioned how Foster probably rubbed some of his media contentiousness onto Tate a bit. I think what Tate said about Manziel's relationship with the media has a lot more to do with Tate's relationship with the media.

That was the nicest way I could tell you to stop.

Tate saying that he's tired of the Manziel attention isn't a bad habit he picked up from Arian Foster. Nor is it indicative of his character. Ben Tate wanted to play in Cleveland, he has accepted the city and it's fans.

Everyone is tired of the Manziel hype, even the Manboys.

Tate said it the best way possible- Manziel has to earn his title. What he did in college is immaterial, just like Mark Ingram.

Do you honestly believe that no other player in the NFL goes to Vegas, or parties with fellow NFL players, or gets drunk at a party after being drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft?

Many players do. I bet 28 of the 32 people drafted in the first round racked up $1,000 bar tabs that night or went home and railed out some hottie. Only difference is the media was waiting for Manziel to do it.

I think you're coming to a lot of unsupported conclusions. You don't think Ben says what he does because he wants the attention? Look at his situation. He finally emerges from Foster's shadow and for a while he's the talk of the town. I'm sure he saw himself as the feature back in the offense. Then comes the draft. Not only does another running back come in and play at least as well as he does, but this guy Manziel comes in and completely steals the limelight. Ben can't figure out why when he hasn't done anything in the NFL. The reason is because Johnny Football is a celebrity and for all of Ben's twittering, he really doesn't compare. Everything that you say about other rookies not getting the attention that Manziel gets proves that he is a celebrity. Yes, it makes no sense and it goes beyond football. But, this is one of the reasons he's in Cleveland, to lend his brand to the Browns and get them more attention. If it isn't then Browns made a big mistake drafting him.

How are my conclusions unsupported yet yours aren't?

We're arguing a guys motivations and feelings, neither of our claims can be supported by fact.

All we can do is guesstimate based on decisions made and character shown. And Ben Tate has done a hell of a lot more good than bad in the extremely short time he's been here.

  • You don't understand life if your only explanation for tate's comments is jealousy. That line of reasoning assumes everyone wants the media following their every move.....

THAT....in and of itself....is a completely false assumption.

  • @everlastingxxx said:

He is rubbing me the wrong way. Sounds like he is jealous of all the attention Manziel gets. Hence why he is going to great lengths to put attention onto himself. All the players were raving about the throw Johnny made to Cameron and he says that its nothing he hasnt seen before. Umm yea whatever Tate, fuckin career backup.

Either you didn't read the article or your reading comprehension is dog shit.
