CLEVELAND, Ohio - Former Cleveland Browns coach Rob Chudzinski is now a member of the Indianapolis Colts in a position called special assistant to the head coach.

That means "Chud" will do just about anything to assist Colts head coach Chuck Pagano, writes Stephen Holder on IndyStar.com.

A clearer picture of Chudzinski's contributions is emerging. His role, it turns out, isn't limited to offense and defense. And he doesn't work solely with Pagano, despite what his title suggests.

So what exactly will Chudzinski do? He's a resource. He's an encourager. He's a sounding board, writes Holder.

"He's been in the defensive room, he's been in the linebackers' room, he's been all around," said linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, another Cleveland import. "I don't know exactly what his title is, but I know having him in this building ... they're getting a lot of good knowledge out of him because he's got a ton of background."

Since Chudzinski's background is with the offense, it would seem he would have more of a presence with offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. But that hasn't been the case, so far.

Holder writes how Greg Manusky, the defensive coordinator, has been occupying hours of Chudzinski's time and enjoying every minute of it.

"I can sit down with Chud for a good 30, 40 (minutes) to an hour and just melt through stuff that he did in Carolina and what he did in Cleveland as well," Manusky said. "It's a great addition for me to have a guy like that from an offensive perspective. Even though (Pagano) is here, it's still a defensive perspective. ... I understand, 'OK, I want to beat this protection.' But how do you actually beat it?. ... (Chudzinski explains,) 'Here's what the guard's thinking. This is what the center's thinking.' That helps me to come up with something that'll beat that protection.'"

More than likely, Chudzinski will offer his expertise in defending the zone-read quarterback runs he used in Carolina with Cam Newton.

  • office bitch

  • Not being a smart ass, but wasn't this known he had a job with the Colts months ago? Maybe this gives more detail on his particular job, I can't recall.

Yeah, but I don't think the hire was ever officially announced. If it was, so be it, but that article is from this morning.

  • I wish the guy well, I wasn't too mad he got let go but he was in a lot of ways set up to fail from the top down. It's amazing to think this time last year the arguably three top positions on the staff side are gone

  • Best of luck to the guy. I guess l don't really know who made the call last year during that wierdo week, but it was one of the ballsiest things l ever saw a coach/GM do.

Browns trade their first round draft pick from last year. Ok then.

And bypassed their 2nd string QB to start their 3rd stringer. Sure, why not!

  • from HC to special teams coach.

    how the mighty fall.

  • "heavy lies the crown"......don't I know

I could easily see the guy getting an OC job in a few years. He's going to be working with an actual good QB again in Indy and did some pretty good work with the panthers.

Same title... New article just has more detail on how role has developed.

  • Dec 7th is why he's there. He was available, they picked him up for nothing....and he's gonna ensure the Browns don't surprise them with anything on the 7th. You obviously can't hire every former coach/staff from every team that let them go...but if you can get one or two guys who are not yet 1 year removed from their former teams, and those teams are on your schedule....why not? The article is acting surprised he's talking with the defense...well that's a dead giveaway. The Colts aren't going to change anything drastically on offense just for one game. But defensively they will. So even though Chud may not know everything about the system Shanahan is going to run....he has in depth knowledge about most of the players that Shanahan will be working with. The colts just basically cemented a win with a special assistant to the assistant of the head coach or whatever fuck title they gave him. He's gonna be sitting on a beach somewhere the whole season enjoying the money he's still pulling from the Browns. Than sometime late November they'll call him up from the Caribbean.

Sure... if the coach you hire was the only one to leave his previous team.

But when staff turnover is as high as ours was and schemes on both sides of the ball change, the value of the hire is minimal and declines with every passing week of the season.
