Browns fans outside of Ohio

  • NE Ohio here.

    Lots of Steeler fans.

Ok, the thread title says "outside of Ohio"...but I'm originally from Western Pa. and have to mention that during my dads generation, there were a lot of browns fans in Western Pa. because the Steelers always sucked.

So its easy to guess why there are so many Steeler fans in Ohio.

I love how you stereotype. The days of Cleveland football greatness are a distant memory only in the minds of Clevelanders. Cleveland is a football town only in the mind of Clevelanders, to most everyone else they are an embarrassment of a franchise with ignorant, arrogant, drunken, and boorish fans.

Well, the stereotype of the Steeler fan as a ignorant stupid idiot is no stereotype.....it is an impiracal fact.....You are exhibit A.

So, you don't think Cleveland IS a football town? What do you think it is, a baseball/basketball/hockey town?

Or do you think that LA/San Fran/SD or any of those towns in Calif. are bigger football towns than Cleveland is?

Or, do you just not like the fact that Cleveland is really, by far, a better football town than Pittsburgh, with a better football pedigree?

As far as the days of Cleveland football greatness.....well, a new era of that may just beginning. Certainly an era of Pittsburgh football mediocrity has begun.

Or do you think that LA/San Fran/SD or any of those towns in Calif. are bigger football towns than Cleveland is? If you measure it by failure and embarrassment then Cleveland wins hands down. Or maybe you can measure it by how how badly the fans "want" a winner, that would rank Cleveland pretty high.

Or, do you just not like the fact that Cleveland is really, by far, a better football town than Pittsburgh, with a better football pedigree? Have another toke dude!

And what does that have to do with which particular sport we have passion for? That just means we have had some shitty ownership of our teams over the years.

I see nothing to be embarrassed about. Are you personally embarassed because the Pirates set the record for most consecutive losing seasons for a professional sports franchise? Yes, it is a failure, but not an embarassment. And, no...that is not how a teams passion for its team is determined. The test of a fanbase is how it hangs in their with its team in times of extended failure by that team on the field.

I doubt seriously that Pittsburgh Steeler fans would at all come close to displaying the same kind of continued support and devotion for their team in the face of a long period of losing. You are famous frontrunner/fair weather fans. Do we want a winner? Absolutely. Name me any town that doesn't.

Or, do you just not like the fact that Cleveland is really, by far, a better football town than Pittsburgh, with a better football pedigree? Have another toke dude!

Thirteen Championships......call us when Pittsburgh even reaches the halfway point to that figure. And lets see, where is the Pro Football Hall of Fame located again? Oh, yea, Northeast Ohio.

As far as the days of Cleveland football greatness.....well, a new era of that may just beginning. Certainly an era of Pittsburgh football mediocrity has begun. You say this every year, and you are wrong every year, so take a guess what the odds are for this year?

Odds of what? Winning the Super Bowl....ain't happening. Getting on the road to perhaps that goal? about 95%. Being better than the Steelers? About 50/50.

Yes, and the fans of Northeast Ohio teams have 13 rings....there is a definite difference there.

So you need more education on this subject?

  • I've lived all over the US - Ohio ( 4 times ), California ( 3 times ), Texas, Nebraska, Mississippi, Minnesota, North Carolina ...

It's been my experience, people only care about their teams - meaning where they're from ( I'm normally around a lot of military personnel ) - for the most part. Regional bias is often the norm, with few exceptions to the front runners - Patriots, Steelers, Cowboys, etc. I currently work with a guy who's from NC ... and he's a Steelers/Seahawks fan. ( supposedly because of his grandparents, etc ). I wear my Browns gear and people don't say shit to me. I make it a point to always say something to other Browns fans though. But if comes up in combination, people never really express their opinions one way or the other about the Browns - good, bad, indifferent.

I recently ran into a guy here in Monterey, wearing a Browns sweatshirt with the Elf on it. I said "Go Browns. Where in Ohio are you from?" He said he wasn't from Ohio, just loved the sweatshirt, and cheered for the Browns on occasion. Odd response. In my life, I've run into one Browns fan who wasn't from Ohio ... he was from New York. Claimed to be a Bears fan until Payton died, and then became a Browns fan. Dunno.

2 years ago, I was in at BW3s in Fairfield ( between Sacramento and San Fran ), watching the Browns beat the crap out of the Bungles. It was my birthday, and I was screaming and clapping. A dude in Falcons gear, from the other side of the bar comes over. He said "I just want to shake your hand. I've never met a real live Browns fan. You're loud and proud." Damn straight.

People are people ... nothing surprises me anymore.

  • I'm in Boston and most people just feel sorry for me. Last year's come-from-behind victory for the Patriots against the Browns didn't help. And shameful as it was, I was telling Patriot fans not to leave the stadium because they were about to witness one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history (I just knew it was going to happen). I only wish that the final field goal attempt didn't come up about 5 yards short. Campbell played a good game, but the defense collapsed in the 4th quarter.

Nonetheless, Bostonians can pity me all they want; being a Browns fan is about resilience during difficult times. When we do start winning games and perhaps championships again, we will know that we were loyal during the tough times and that will make the good times even sweeter!

    Go Browns!!

Browns fan hear in Boston area too. We just visited the football museum at Gilette Stadium and watched the movie about the Patriots "struggles" through the years to win the Super Bowl. My brother and I were like yeah you poor Pats fans have had it so hard lol. When they have The Drive, The Fumble, and the Move they can come cry us a river and talk to us about football resilience!

Well, in a certain sense I understand what Pats fans talk about. They did not win their first championship until like their 41st year of existance. The Browns won championships in their first 5 years of existance.

Their length of time waiting is not dissimilar to how long the Browns have to wait.

And also.....lets be clear....the Patriots have NOT won the title now in 10 years.....and I honestly don't see them winning again in the near future. Sure, they will always have a chance as long as Brady is playing up to the way he has played in his career. But how long can that last now that he is like 37 years old?

And that team is not really getting much better around him, is it?

But, no, the Pats fans never had to endure the heartbreak Browns fans have had to......though these last two losses in the Super Bowl....when I believe each time they were the better team, were a bit devastating.....in an objective sense. But I feel no pity for Boston area fans for having lost those. They have been far too lucky overall with wins by their teams in the last 10 years to feel any sorrow for. Fuck them.

I think the same brilliant head coach who brought them three Super Bowl wins is now precipitating their fall. He has appointed himself GM and outside of first round picks and a few late-round hits hasn't drafted very well. I can't imagine Lombardi is going to make the situation there much better. I'll enjoy wearing my brown and orange in patriots country when we are better than them in a few years.

We were better than them last year....except for a ridiculous breakdown at the end of the game.

  • How does your state view the Browns? Are they respected? Laughed at? Etc.

I live in California and there is not a single person that thinks the Browns are good. Not on defense not on offense not ever. All they really know is Jim Brown. And now Johnny Manziel. And I get it. They haven't had much to talk about in years but still they will put ever other team above the Browns on any type of level. It's annoying. Any other people outside of ohio?

Die hard? Actually never say die

The fans are recognized as either the best or one of the best fan bases in football, and rightly so.

Almost everytime I meet another Brown fan here, it's like we already know each other.

Seems like sports, with a healthy dose of drinking and druggin, is a huge part of Boston/NE culture. Sox fans are prolly some of the most intense. the Celtic's tradition is solid

with memories of iconic players and their amaziing championship runs. I have been exposed (like an std) to some hardcore celt fans and would have no problem spending hours

talking about the glory and the pride of that which is Boston basketball. Pat fans are, ummm, just that - Pats fans.

Those bostonians who piss and moan about their trials and tribulations merely need to recall the first decade of the new millenium during which the pats won three rings along with

the sox. oh yea, lets not forget about the Bruins and Celts who sport championship rings from the 20 0's. A serious ear punch should be delivered to any New Englanderl who isn't

    satisfied with their teams perfomances

  • boston is where i finally grew up a bit after a big swift kick in the ass from my family. discharged from fort devens i still had a lot of friends in the area and found myself in the position of a lifetime. lived in milton and was infamous for the guy sitting behind the bruins bench during a rangers game and just mouthing "what the fuck" all game long. not kidding. went into a bar the next day and i ordered a drink and the bartender goes "aren't you that guy that was behind the bench....." i guess because i was wearing an orange indians jersey i had to pay double...?

BTW if you've ever smelled a bad gym bag, imagine smelling a trough of hockey players/bb players uniforms downwind. reminds me of walking through the stables at saratoga.
