Tim Howard doesn't care how many saves he made - "I signed up to do that, to put my face in front of balls"

...nope, nothing remotely funny about that at all...

I'm proud of this team. We made it out of the group of death, which is more than just about everyone expected.

As for the game, Belgium just dominated us for the first 90 minutes, and if it wasn't for Howard, it'd have been a blowout. I think Belgium's strategy was brilliant, they correctly bet that they would be able to hold off the US without Altidore attacking. Their best player, Lukaku, sat on the bench until extra time. When he came in, he immediately created two scoring opportunities that sealed the game. Now he's well rested for their matchup with Argentina.

In extra time, the team finally woke up, and Bradley, who is supposed to be the best player on our team, finally made a hell of a pass that found 19 year old, Julian Green in the box. The goal was beautiful, and that kid is the future of this team. Klinsmann deserves some flak for leaving Donovan off the roster - his replacement, Wondolowski, missed a wide open net in extra time of the second half that would have won the game. I think if Donovan's taking that shot, it's a goal. Dempsey had a shit game, and blew two chances, toeing the ball at the keeper in a one-on-one, and not striking the ball as it hit his right foot at the top of the box.

That last attempt by Dempsey right into the keeper, there wasn't too much more he could have done. Especially considering they'd been playing fit so long. He also played out of position every game.

The young guys Klinsman picked played well. The next 4 years of US soccer should be very interesting

I essentially saved a shot with my Adam's Apple a few times. I'd take a ball to the face over a ball to the throat any day lol. That shit hurt

I'd take a shot to the face to stop a goal, regardless. Have done many times, although my goalkeeping days are well behind me (about 10 years behind me!)

Good game USA. For all the people calling soccer "gay", (obviously brainwashed from the executives of the big 3 other sports in the US), more people watched the game then the last game of the nba finals and world series combined.

nothing else to watch. also it's a national team, not just one team from tx and one from fla who people outside those states could give less than a fugg.

gave people a reason to take off work and start drinking at noon.

It's always fun to root for the USA, like Mik says, especially when we are an underdog.

The gay part is flopping and writhing in pain anytime someone touches your shoulder. C'mon Man.

I didnt sit through any games but I caught bits and pieces and rooted for the USA.

In the end, they lost two, tied one and beat a small Third World country by one goal.

    Still a ways to go.

1980 Hockey Team is still The Great American Sports Story.

Soccer will continue on in the suburbs and the hispanic neighborhoods ... but it wont see my TV for another 4 years.

Well, that is my comment. As much as I love the whole USA v the World thing, the game itself just doesn't grab me. Not enough to watch an entire game.

Not sure why you take it so personal. Like you said I'm in a shrinking group ... as a die hard Browns fan, I dont mind at all being in a shrinking group, in fact I will wear it like a badge.

I like Football, baseball and basketball. Cant get into soccer. Thats just the way it is.

Wish they would have had better results though ... with the athletes in this country we should be able to beat more than just a tiny third world country.

I've been hearing how rapidly soccer was growing in this Country since the 1994 World Cup, that's a generation. Those ten year old kids that were choosing soccer are 30 now.

It is admittedly a great sport for youngsters if you are a parent, they get a great workout, learn team concepts and don't risk too much injury.

So why with all these kids playing Soccer havent we developed a better National team?

I think it is because Lebron James plays basketball and Andrew Luck plays football ... but theirs sisters might play soccer. The best American athletes still want to be stars in American sports.

But we should have enough hackey sackers and hispanics by now to beat freaking Belgium.

I agree that there aren't too many american icons that play soccer. Maybe now with Tim Howard? But you don't want a generation of goal keepers. There hasn't yet been an american player that's come anywhere near being world class.

On the other hand, I disagree that you should be able to win just by sheer volume of people in the country. China has a billion people - are they going to beat Canada at football, soccer, ice hockey? No. You need the proper training and infrastructure from an early age. Those Belgians you're thinking you should be beating have been playing the game in a professional club's youth academy since a very young age. Eden Hazard - their best player - apparently joined his first pro club at the age of 4. Ridiculous, I agree. But soccer isn't a sport like football where you can just switch after college from basketball and become a superstar, it takes years, if not decades of training and dedication to get to the top.

Another factor is that USA is a bit of an outlier in terms of domestic club football. You have the teams in Europe with all the money, and the best teams from each country play each other in continental competition each season. In south america, you have a lot of players that are either not quite good enough for a move to europe, or couldn't hack it there and came back, but the general idea is the same, you have several leagues of a relatively similar standing, playing each other regularly. As soon as any idea springs up in one league, the other leagues all have to learn to deal with it, and some will copy it.

  • MLD WoodyM MLD Woody wrote on last edited by

Its not like the players on the national team aren't athletes. They've just focused on soccer their whole lives. Altidore could have played football if that was his focus. A lot of guys could have been very successful at another sport. People want to act like if Calvin (or Lebron or whomever) played soccer they'd instantly be a star. That's not necessarily true. But these players on the national team are amazing athletes, its not like that couldn't translate to another sport.

But like I said, its development. We're getting more club level experience for kids and many stay club level through highschool too. But in general this isn't near the preparation it is in other countries. College is basically looked at as wasted years as far as development goes. Belgium has a much better development system, pure volume doesn't matter

What are you considering works class Chris? I'd say Tim Horward is pretty damn good. Dempsey too.

  • gftChrisG gftChris wrote on last edited by

World Class? well, if you list the top 5 keepers in the world, Tim Howard isn't in there. There's a reason Man Utd let him go, and he's stayed at everton ever since. Top 20, maybe, but when you talk world class, I'm looking for the players that I'd take to make my ultimate team, and then the second team. Howard is a very good keeper though and probably your best player.

Dempsey? No. Pick a position you want to play him in and you'll be able to list dozens of players better than him. He's been up front for USA this world cup, so listing the strikers that would be ahead of him just off the top of my head - Suarez, Messi, Ronaldo, van Persie, Rooney, Zlatan, Aguero, Falcao, Mueller, Cavani, Higuain, Mandzukic, Costa.

He played in central midfield for Fulham; that's an even longer list.

That's why I was asking what you considered "world class". So like top 10

It's basically the top tier of talent. For goalkeepers, it's probably top 5 or less. Central midfielders, there may be 20.
