Monday Morning Tears

The Browns Board
15 9 630
  • The Browns ugly loss to Buffalo yesterday has suddenly silenced any talk of playoffs in the toughest division in football. People are jumping off the Hoyer bandwagon with yesterday's dose of reality. Johnny Football critics are conceding it may be time to test the waters and see what he can do.

True Browns fans must admit the Browns are in trouble right now. Two weeks ago everything was going along smoothly but now it seems to be falling apart. Another loss will be demoralizing and might derail any chance of getting in the playoffs.

The truth is they're not that good. They've over achieved at every position. The injuries are now starting to take their toll and they're going to be hard to overcome.

Players at every position will have to step up. They will have to limit stupid mistakes ala Josh Gordon's ball spinning.

Hoyer picked a bad time to start regressing and must play better.

Ok, I agree with the last sentence you wrote, and some of the 2nd one.

I think the truth is they're a young football team who is learning how to win. The future is brighter than most of us fans thought it would be heading into the season.

It's probably a stretch, but the Browns aren't out of it. Sweep the next 2 home games vs AFC contenders and this board will be happy again.

If we beat Indy the board will be happy again. Not to mention ESPN will have a 3 hour special about manziels dream run to get the browns to the playoffs if he's in.

First, there's no crying in football!

Second, you say over achieved, I say exceeded expectations. The whole has been greater than the sum of the parts. The O sprang two rookie RBs, one WR and an OG on us that have played great ball this year. This D came together right on the schedule Pettine talked about it coming together.

Third, we have only failed to overcome one injury. Outside of that one, every next man has stepped up and stepped up big. That's happened too many time to be an "overachieving" accident, it's great prep of well selected talent.

  • I think we all thought this team was better than it was when the Saints went down...but look at the Saints, look at that whole division. It wasn't as a big a win as everyone thought it was. A lot of people had the Saints going to the NFC championship. Then we all thought the team was back on track after the Steelers win and then the Bengals win...but we see how up and down both those teams are. Not as quality wins as we were led to believe. The fact is that the teams with the "consistently" good defense's will beat us. Yesterdays game really exposed our own defense. Oneill basically had to say we're not gonna let them run for 150 yds and see if Orton can beat us...which he did just enough to beat us. Had we gotten some pressure on him maybe the game would have been closer...but who knows maybe that's the trade off, when we get after the QB we are categorically incapable of stopping the run. A defense can a little bit better at one or the other...but you can't have a defense that in order to either stop the run or the pass, the other gets sacrificed like a lamb in the old testament. Too many holes on this team. It actually speaks to these coaches that we've won as many games as we have. Like seriously. They worked with what they had pretty fucking good. Just give a Pettine a 5 or 6 year no fire clause and let him build his team.

  • Colt McCoy threw for 392 yards and three touchdowns against the Colts. These guys are vulnerable!

  • Pettine is a much better coach than any we've had in decades. I mean decades! You are right. Let Pettine build a team and that takes time. We are going in the right direction and the team is playing its heart out. At least most of them. Haden has been awesome! But injuries to Gipson and Mack are so damn unfortunate right now. This core of young p,ayers will be the team of the future and win the division. Just not this year.

  • I had us going 7-9 at the start of the season, and we will be at least that. I have enjoyed watching Browns football again, and it's been a long time since I can honestly say that.

They have exceeded my expectations with a rookie head coach and his ragtag assistants, all while fielding a QB with less starts than Brandon Weeden, their star WR suspended for 2/3s of the year and suffering more injuries than any NFL team deserves.

Yes, the losses suck, and I hate them when they are happening, but once the anger/pain/frustration of the loss wears off, I can honestly say Sunday mornings are fun again, and not just because of my fantasy teams' domination any more.

From where I sit, things look pretty darn good for the Browns, and we have finally pulled ourselves out of the grips of despair and are headed in the right direction.

  • I agree they have been fun to watch again. My hope at the beginning of the season was 8-8. That would be an immense improvement over previous years. And although this year is hardly over, injuries to the defense have pretty much sealed our fate. You are correct when you say they can't stop the run and we have many holes to fill. But these can and will be addressed in the draft.

The Browns Board is a good place to vent when you've loved and been loyal to your team since the 1960's. My Dad took me to my first game as a small child the last year Jim Brown played. I think we lost to the Bears. But Ivve never rooted or cared about any other team in all these years. Living in Tampa now I hardly get to see them play but stay glued to the NFL Channel on Gameday. So maybe I get a little frustrated as all fans do.

But I love the Orange and Brown and the proof is in my wardrobe.

  • OMG! I forgot to mention we should be thankful we don't have the JETS. Whenever I get down on the Browns all I have to do is think about Rex Ryan, Geno Smith and Michael Vick. Than I go back to normal.

Definitely several teams in way worse of positions. We have lots of young talent that we're winning with, that'll be around for awhile and plenty room to add more. We also have veteran talent in the right places.

Colts also played with a 20 point or more lead much of the game, and that tends to loosen up a Defense. But, yes, the Colts are vulnerable.

  • I had a hard time sleeping last night - blown opportunity and now I'm a huge hole with this afc playoff mess

If McCoy, the worst QB in the last 15 years can do that, what can JFF do? Unlimited.

Worse than Weeden? Come on. Weeden at least had Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron to throw to. McCoy had no offensive weapons except maybe Hillis that one year. That play last Sunday where Colt eluded 3 defenders and threw a touchdown pass was a thing of beauty. Hopefully whoever the Browns QB is next Sunday will have some equally amazing plays.
