Should we consider Andre Smith Should he Fall to #5

  • I know we need a linebacker, and I know that Andre Smith made a very poor decision but we are talking about a kid here and all young kids make stupid mistakes so if Andre Smith is available when we select at #5 do anyone feel it would be a good idea to select him.

We are still talking about the talent this guy has and he is a guy who would step in from day 1 and start at right guard or right tackle and this would greatly impact/improve our running game. I just think a talent like Andre Smith would be too good to pass up.

I am now convinced the draft will go something like this"

1: Lions: Matthew Stafford, for all the talk about trading for a veteran and the cost its time the Lions get their Franchise quarterback and its not like they are going to be a playoff team this year they should take the QB 1st and the LT or defense with there other 1st round pick.

    2. Rams:Eugene Monroe-OT or Jason Smith, depends who they like better they have got to get better on the offensive line

    3. Chiefs: This IMO is the wildcard of the 1st round, Pioli needs a quarterback and could try to trade for Cassell or he could look at Sanchez, but at New England he like picking defensive lineman in the 1st round and with the Chiefs going to a 3-4 he could take B.J. Raji, that being said he could also draft Curry and if thats the case I see Curry playing outside linebacker in Kansas City to take advantage of his many talents.( Pioli until taking Mayo last year never took a linebacker in the 1st round) They could also surprise everyone and take Michael Crabtree who the new coach could see as his Larry Fitzgerald.

    4. Seahawks: I think they go B.J. Raji if he is available and Crabtree if Raji is gone, or offensive lineman Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith with Walter Jones getting old.

    5. Which brings us to the Browns and IMO it all depends on who the Chiefs draft if Curry will be available, then do we consider a dominant offensive lineman like Andre Smith ( Best Player Available) or do we trade down and get additional picks, we could package our #5 with Derek Anderson or our #5 with Kellen Winslow and still get a pick 10-20 and get a early/mid 2nd round pick or trade down and get a extra 3rd round pick. or take Curry if he is available and pick another linebacker in round 2 or center and hope we can trade Derek Anderson for a 3rd round pick.

  • Absolutely consider him.

  • He is going to fall way past us after his combine fiasco. I would consider Smith or Monroe if they were still available though.

  • Also, Curry could very well go number 1 now. Plus, with Spags being in STL now he may want the best defensive player in the draft. I just see too many obstacles for him to be there for us. I hope he is, but I won't hold my breath. I think Seattle might consider OT, but I personally think they should take Crabtree.

  • 5th overall? Not me....There were stories that some teams were taking him completely off their big boards! You want to consider him at #5? Please, no way. No more head cases. They can be a cancer that really hurts a team.

This is a guy that said he didn't want to participate in the combine because he wasn't prepared? Huh? How can you not prepare for the biggest days of your life. Days that will make you many millions of dollars. If he can't prepare for that, how is he going to get motivated to prepare AFTER he's made his millions?

Lastly, He's a guy that is on the verge of being just too fat. If he's not real motivated I could see him getting even bigger than he is now.

Hopefully he goes UDFA and we can give him a prove it deal and see what he's made of 🙂

Id prob use a 6th-7th on him anyway.

  • Who would you rather have? I'd take Monroe in a heartbeat over Smith.

Just remember Mandarach looked like Monroe. Eric Williams of the Dallas Cowboys beared a STRONG resemblence to Andre Smith in the sense that they aren't ever going to be confused with a gym rat. But if you want a BIG boy with alot of mean and nasty with a surprisingly long wing span for his height - you got a kid that plays with great leverage and skills.

I'm REALLY bummed this kid blew off his job interviews and wasn't at all prepared. There's DEFINITELY going to be teams that question his desire. I think it's just a case of a kid that's not very bright lacking the right guidance. It's not like he's in trouble with the law or he's doing drugs. And I don't think he's the type you'll have to worry about losing his football skills if they EVER implement the kind of updated drug testing that can detect HGH. If ANYONE watches this kid play - they're not going to see a lack of effort or a kid that looks like he HATES what he is doing out there. Watch a couple games if you have access and the ability to and you'll see what I mean. I've seen the other tackles they are trying to put up there ahead of him and outside of Monroe it requires creativity.

If ANY living in the SEC area saw the look on Saban's face when he was trying to explain they'll have to play without Andre - it was pretty much a foreshadowing of How Nick felt his team went from elite to incomplete.

Can you imagine being there to see Andre? "Hey guys I'm not gonna lift, I just started working out and.... Hold on, my pizza and wings just arrived. Anyone got any cake I can borrow? I'll pay you back when I get my hot signing bonus."

    - Tom F. (Saban got alot out of him so if he goes to the RIGHT coach - there's proof you can get some quality football out of him)

  • Excellent post, Tom.

Smith is surprisingly athletic for the way he looks. The kid can play. As John Gruden said, there are alot of teams picking in the middle of the first round that are loving these conversations of Smith dropping out of the top 10.

You make a good point by saying he's not in trouble with the law nor mixed up with drugs and that kind of thing. He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, or as you said, simply lacks the right kind of guidance from someone that he takes to heart, but the kid can play.

Having said all that, I can't see taking a Right Tackle with the #5 overall pick. I'm still on the Orakpo bandwagon.

  • I have mentioned Andre Smith for a good while now.

    I would take him.

In the end, he is still going to pancake people every Sunday, and really, that is all I care about.

Two years from now, the only people complaining about him not working out will be the people who's teams LE and LOLB were just destroyed by the guy.

Some idiots are going to pass him for the wrong reasons just like teams passed on Sapp for the wrong reasons.

Worse reasons really. This is because a goof like Mike Mayock doesn't approve him not working out.

    GMAB.

  • I just love this.....The guy is setting off one warning sign after another and there is still those out there that would want him.

It's says something about society today.

Pointing out that he is fat is just one of the many obvious problems with this kid.

It wasn't just the decision to not work out. From the reports it was more. There were reports that he was horrible in the interviews and dressed inappropriately for the interviews. I think it was a combination of things that made teams drop him from their big boards supposedly.

Since his fiasco with his agent before the bowl game (Which cost his team!) Smith has been on a steady downhill roll.....And yet some idiot GM and coach will still draft him in the first round. It'll come back to bite them in the ass.

You want guys that lack character and good judgement? Have at him.

How many guys that lack the motivation to get in shape and that lack good sound judgment become champions? Not many.

As another poster just said in another thread....It's heart, desire and motivation that seperates the great ones from the rest of the league. The things I suspect Smith lacks.

  • Personally, I hope he has a great pro day. One more guy that could entice someone to trade up. IF there ever was a year to trade down to get extra picks, this is it.

I hope Sanchez has a great pro day.

I hope Smith has a great pro day.

I hope Crabtree has shown enough with his play to hold his value.

I hope Monroe has a great pro day.

I hope there is someone who some GM falls in love with and has to have.

I want guys like Brinkley, Barton, Jennings, Greene, Alex Mack, and Patrick Chung. I'll trade down twice.

  • this draft is stocked with tackles that we don't need. even if we did, we don't need a trouble maker like smith

  • When asked what he looks for in offensive linemen, Kokinis said smarts and size top the list. "The first thing you want to find out is how smart they are," he said. "They gotta be smart; there's so much going on with these 3-4 schemes that people run in our division, they've got to be able to think on their feet . . . That's what makes the Combine so great because you can get the players in there, put the monitor on and let them explain it . . . And obviously physcial size. You've got to be big in this divsion and get some push at the line and got to be physical. We've got some downhill runners in our backfield and we need to push and that's what we're going to try to strive for."

The guy is a very very good football player and will make some team very happy while some teams who were all excited about some guys 40 times at the combine and how many reps he can do or how he dressed and interviewed will be watching Andre Smith as a Pro bowl tackle for many years to come while there own draft pick turns into a bust.

How many Super bowls or playoffs have the Browns played in and you worry about a guy who has never got in trouble being a troublemaker

I just want good football players, I want the a very mean, nasty SOB who kicks butt on the field, smacks guys in the face , I am tired off all these so good guys we have that continue to give us 4 and 5 win seasons.

Give me nasty guys like James Harrison and Ray Lewis and I will take them type of players everyday

Also, Curry could very well go number 1 now...

As if Curry needed more pumping up, he was featured in USA Today this morning:

Seen as draft's 'safest pick,' LB Aaron Curry in a favorable spot

    By Sean Leahy, USA TODAY

INDIANAPOLIS — What does it mean to be labeled as the "safest pick" in the NFL draft for Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry?

"I can come in instantly and make an impact on anybody's defense," Curry said. "And (with) my versatility as a linebacker to be able to play in the 3-4, inside or outside, or 4-3, inside or outside, you just can't go wrong."

Curry, whose 4.56-second time in the 40-yard dash was fastest among linebackers Monday, is rated by many experts as the best linebacker available and the surest option in a draft class marked with risk.

"You're going to hand him $30 million or $40 million guaranteed and he's going to be like Matt Ryan," NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said. "He's going to put it in the bank and he's going to go to work."

Being in such a position is a far cry from what happened to Curry two years ago.

"I came home from college and my mom was telling me we were being evicted and we didn't have anywhere to stay," said Curry, who sought shelter with friends. "At that point, we didn't have the funds to get into another house. Those are the moments you think about in the fourth quarter when there's a play that needs to be made and you have the opportunity to provide for your family for the rest of their lives."

The Butkus Award winner as the nation's top linebacker last season, Curry is a potential first overall pick for the Detroit Lions in April's draft.

A strong pass defender and the son of former NFL defensive back Reggie Pinkney (Lions, Baltimore Colts, 1977-81), Curry says his motivation is to pay back the faith shown in him by his mother, Chris, and older brothers Brandon and Christopher.

He has tattoos of Brandon and Christopher's names on each forearm. And branded on his left shoulder are two of his favorites: A tattoo of a bar code from his sweet indulgence, JuJuBes, and the words "Property of Chris Curry."

"I was teasing my mom about putting her picture (on the other shoulder)," Curry said, "but she told me she'd beat me if I did."

He considered leaving school early last year given the family's financial struggles, but NFL officials said he wasn't likely to be a top pick. "They told me I had a third-round grade," Curry said. "That was another day that burns in the back of my mind. But I'm glad they gave me that grade."

Curry's mother convinced him she could make it another year before he signed an NFL contract. And after a dominant season — he had 105 tackles, including 16 for lost yardage and 2½ sacks, and three fumble recoveries — Curry is poised for a big payday.

His first purchase? "First thing on the list is whatever mom says," Curry said. "House, car; anything she needs."

His personality belies Curry's on-field ferocity. Wake Forest cornerback Alphonso Smith called him a "humble beast," and teammate Chip Vaughn, a safety, said it's Curry's intelligence that elevates him above his competitors. "He dominates every single play," Vaughn said. "There's not a play where he's going to take off. He dominates the man across from him. And he's not a guy that's out there getting hyped or talking trash to the crowd. That's just something that he expects to happen."

He's a player who Mayock said "does everything well."

"You can put him in a 4-3 scheme, or you can play him in a 3-4 scheme," Mayock said. "You could insert him day one and he's a starter and your defense is better and you don't have to worry about him getting in trouble."

  • Smith may very well be one of those kids who can dominate at their level.

But, just because you have the stellar ability to play, doesn't mean you WANT to.

And, a player can act like he's motivated for a while, but with the $$$$$$ and a few

years, it will show that he doesn't really care.

There was a LOT of time for Smith to know if he wanted to go for it in the combine or not.

His pro day would have to include -extensive- reasons why he bailed at the combine.

    I don't know...

Give me players who LOVE the freakin game and get mean about going after playing the game

    at the next level.

Thanks Al! There's alot of exciting opportunities for us. It's like going grocery shopping when you're hungry - everything looks delicious and needed. We definitely need pass rushers/LBers on D.

Regarding Andre: there's coaches out there that could get alot of good football out of him. You know who REALLY work well with this kid? Mike Singletary and I think that's the team Gruden was referring to hoping Andre falls to them. It'll be interesting.

I doubt we're going after Andre BUT I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep if we did. To really feel his value - just look at Bama WITH him and then see how much they changed without him. HUGE difference.

If we just want to have a little fun here with an unlikely scenario - here's how we COULD look with Andre being our younger version of Erik Williams here:

Joe Thomas Eric Steinbach Hank Fraley R.Tucker/R.Hadnot Andre Smith

I'm not sure where we are with RG. I don't know who stays between Hadnot, Tucker, Shaffer and McKinnie. I think Shaffer would fare much better inside at RG against the wider girths than he does out on the edge. As history has shown us, we're 1 or 2 injuries away from "uh-oh" on the oline so you never know until that pick is announced.

Carolina went with the two 1st round draft picks at OT: Jordan Gross and Jeff Otah. That worked out real well.

    - Tom F.

  • Not sure about Shaffer at RG. Don't think he's strong enough at the point to get push against short, wide-bodied DT's.

Remember, this is a guy who earned a big deal playing in Atlanta's ZBS. The only way I could see him moving inside is if we switched to a scheme that emphasized blocking on the move. And from what I can tell, we're moving in more of a power blocking direction.
