I think in today's high-def, high speed cameras and instant replays, they'd find something wrong with that play to negate it. Like did it hit Tatum or not, and even though that's the more controversial part of it, I question that the nose of the ball didn't touch the ground. How many times have we seen low to the ground catches in modern day football that were called receptions, but then overturned on challenges after viewing the replays?

But it was a different time then, and I'm sure plenty of stuff got by that wouldn't today. Still, the golden rule applies here. "If it seems too good to be true..."

And, of course remember, the rule that could have disqualified Franco from making that catch was repealed....and has been for many many years. If it happened today no one would question that it was a legitimate catch.

True that. Which gives my only leg to stand on that did he really make that catch with the ball being so close to the ground? Perhaps. IMO more unlikely, but that's worth nothing. We'll never know for sure.

i hate that fucking immaculate reception game.....a total fluke play, just fucking luck....i fucking hate anything to do with pittsburgh....

I saw something about that game. They said there was only 4 TV camera's at that game?

    How can that be?

Even back then NFL films had guys on the sidelines.

So there had to be more then 4.

Although, in the end, it didn't matter because the stoolers lost the next week to the undefeated Dolphins

  • I was at the Browns-Jets game too, and the last 2 minutes of regulation and beyond was surreal, but before that the game actually sucked. The following week was just the opposite.

Browns-Steelers in 1980 was awesome, when Sipe hit Ozzie in the corner of the end zone in the last minute, 27-26.

  • I prefer the 51-0 beating we gave the Steelers in 89

    Totally believable only 4 cameras.

More unbelievable- go try and find a complete copy of the Brown's 1964 Championship game- you won't be able to- because one doesn't exist.

The category was "Greatest Game", not "most fucked up games". That would be like putting 10 cent beer night on a list of greatest baseball games ever played.

Though, putting together a list of "Most Fucked Up" games could be very interesting.

OK Woody, you started the list: Most Fucked Up Games in NFL history:

    A. Bottlegate........What else.

  • New England "snow plow" game....cheating bass turds

  • And....The Sam Wyche "you dont live in Cleveland" game...

  • Fucked up games:

AFC title game which Oilers would have won over Steelers if not for bad ref call.

Browns/Broncos "The Drive" game......because Karlis missed.

The Bleacher report list 10 games of the past decade as the worst....but from what I can see, they only picked those because they were low scoring. Maybe they just didn't like defens

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/307520-the-10-worst-nfl-games-of-the-decade

Could the 72-41 game between the Giants and Redskis or the 58-48 Browns/Bengals game in 2004 or the 51-45 Browns/Bengals game in 2007 be considered just as bad because no team was playing defense?

(do you think we could see a similar shootout tomorrow?

What about the game last year between the Packers and Seahawks...where the replacement refs called the Seattle TD that seemed to clearly intercepted.

the Coin Flip game...Thanksgiving 1999...Steelers/Lions where the player calls tails but the ref hears "heads'.

  • The "Tuck Rule" game has to have a place on the Fucked Up list.

Also the "Holy Roller"... it was so clear that Stabler threw the initial "fumble" forward that it's not even close to funny.

And as late greatest game offering I offer the Oilers at Chargers, 1979 playoff game. Dante Pastorini was out as was Earl Campbell.

Oilers went in with their back up QB, Gifford Nielsen, and their back up RB, Rob Carpenter. Carpenter literally threw down his crutches and went into the game on an ankle sprained so badly that he did not walk on it all week, let alone practice.

The Oilers' D picked off Fouts 5 times. Safety Vernon Perry had four of them.

It was one of the greatest team efforts I have ever seen at any level.

  • More fucked up games....

Broncos -Raiders AFC Championship 1977. Broncos Rob Lytle fumbled on the 2 yd line, Raiders recovered, but they called it a TD, Broncos win.

Tuck Rule game, Raiders-Pats. Horrible call that lead to a dynasty.

Bottlegate. Browns are still the only NFL team to have a play reviewed after running a play.

Holy Roller, Raiders vs Chargers. Dave Casper cheated, no call.

Funny fucked up game- Bears-Packers, can't remember the year (70s I think). Chester Marcol's FG blocked, but he caught it and ran it in for a game-winning TD in OT.
