Connor Shaw
-
Yes he does remind me of Alex Smith. I was aghast when they drafted Manziel also. But think we might give him a chance. And if we keep Connor Shaw that may end up a good thing. My pick was Carr or Garapollo. Considering we already had Hoyer, The rookie could sit and learn the first year. They didn't do that. Farmer passed on a stud wide receiver and then went with a media circus. It seems that we are just cursed no matter who's running the show. So I will pray Manziel or Shaw work out. I doubt it but hope they've learned a lesson and draft or at least scout better in the future.

To me Shaw sounds a lot the same as Manziel, at least on paper. Missing most of the tangible physical tools, but has the grit & determination to overcome those things and win.
LOL... just where did our paths diverge?
Sounds more like Hoyer than Manziel to me. I think of Manziel as having physical tools, i.e., arm and quicks, that neither Hoyer nor Shaw have.

Ha!...I should have said tangible physical attributes and prototype tools....you know, the stuff you usually hear when talking QB's.....like....size, strength, exp in NFL system, reading defenses, etc...
For whatever reason, I think of shaw as a smaller more mobile back and dont see Hoyer in that same light....perspectives are funny sometimes....

We start Manziel or trade him next year then it's back to the drawing board. Ugh is this painful. Why not just play him and get a veteran backup who could mentor Shaw or someone like Braxton Miller.

I think QB "mentoring" is fallacious. Other than setting an example of how to prepare, how hard to work there's little teaching. That's what QB coaches are paid to do. Ours, Dowell Loggains, big claim to fame as best I can tell is raising Jake Lockers game last year in TN.
So maybe we can do better. Bernie? Care to contribute rather than carp?

I'm not too sensitive and kiss my ass is as common in Gamecock country as Clemson sucks. I actually thought I was intruding on your board. I'm not a Browns fan yet. We don't get many Browns games down here. We do follow Shaw and would like to see more Browns games if he gets an opportunity to play. The Gamecocks had a similar record to the Browns before we got Shaw, Jefferies, Lattimore and Clowney. Even with Spurrier we basically sucked during his first years at South Carolina and we have started to suck again now that now that those guys are gone. Who knows, maybe the Browns will pull together some similar talent and maybe Shaw will be there to lead them. We hope so.

We have had a Connor Shaw type succeed here before: Mr. Brian Sipe was a 13th round pick back in 1972 (with now 7 rounds he would have been a UDFA just like Shaw). He took over for an overhyped first round pick (Phipps)....and became the Browns all time leading passer. Sipe stature is similar to Shaw's. So it is possible that a guy like him could succeed after a few year. Sipe himself spent 2 years on the taxi squad before being put on the regular roster.
So, be patient.....you never know.

The system in SC was simple not close to an NFL defense - so being able to pick it up and read more complex routes on nfl coverages was one of his questions. Otherwise average arm and probably Alex smith like mobility.
They say he's smart, from a coaching family or whatever. Could pan out someday.

No.Plus I don't think Johnny is going to look very good this
week or next week either. Both Carolina and Baltimore are
fighting for a playoff spot with the Browns having nothing to
play for AND they both have very good defenses.Look out for
Merrill Hoge in the next few weeks plus the offseason.

My first impression of Shaw in the pre season ( albeit short) was he looked comfortable in the pocket and went through his progressions without a lot of dancing around. I thought he looked promising. The thing that troubles me is what kind of offense are we trying to run ? Hoyer and Shaw are similar in style but Manziel is a Colin Crippledick or RG III type. It's evident to me by last weeks debacle we weren't sure what the hell we were doing. It's no wonder the entire team looked so bad. Are we going to run the read option of which I'm not a big fan. It takes too long to develop, or pound the ball running north south and use the PAP.

I've been very open about JFF.
He can improve on some areas of his game but there's 2 things he can never change.
His height and his arm.....

Neither can Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, or Doug Flutie.

Shaw will be just more cannon fodder. Until this team puts an emphasis on the line of scrimmage, we are doomed to losing football. Jesus Christ himself would get creamed back there. No time to pass. No holes to run through. Give me a bad assed O line and I show you how an average QB can look great. Doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results is the definition of insanity. Lets try something different for once.

Randall Cobb... T. Y. Hilton....Odell Beckham, Jr. ...
need dynamic wr playmakers. Don't have any. Except Gordon, who
is a knucklehead.

You mean more "bad assed" than the #1 O-line we saw play into the 2nd Steeler game?

I'd actually like to see Shaw in a real game. He seems to be a good mix between Hoyer and Manziel. A little more mobile than Hoyer, but processes quicker than Manziel.
I just don't see Manziel processing what's happening in front of him quickly enough.
He's dial up in a high speed league.

He can't grow taller or improve his arm strength...so for the sake of comparison in this instance, he is. None of them can grow taller. None of them have elite arm strength. All of them had height/arm concerns. All of them are legitimate NFL quarterbacks in spite of those concerns. Regardless of his mental acuity, from a physical standpoint he is in the exact same boat as they are. They overcame their physical limitations by being smart, efficient quarterbacks. Manziel tries to overcome by running and improvising.
Remains to be seen whether or not he can follow in their footsteps and realize the game is more than "run around and find an open man".
"[NAME REDACTED] is this year's big-time question mark at quarterback. Unlike those who have held this title in the past, [NAME REDACTED] is a stellar passer who shows arm strength and accuracy when he is able to deliver the ball without a hitch.[NAME REDACTED]'s height will be his biggest inhibitor at the next level... It remains to be seen if he can throw effectively from the pocket at the next level."
"Plays in the spread offense, taking the bulk of his snaps from the shotgun... Tends to side-arm his passes going deep...Lacks accuracy and touch on his long throws... Seems more comfortable in the short/intermediate passing attack...Does not possess the ideal height you look for in a pro passer, though his ability to scan the field helps him compensate in this area...Will improvise and run when the passing lanes are clogged, but tends to run through defenders rather than trying to avoid them to prevent unnecessary punishment."
Can you pick which one of those scouting reports was about Manziel and which was about Wilson?

There's more dynamic playmakers than last year's #1 WR in the NFL? Wow. How is that working out for him now, by the way.
Dynamic WR's can't do anything when the ball doesn't get to them. QB's can't do anything if they're getting sacked.
You can put Sammy Watkins across from Gordon with Beckham in the slot and Gronk at TE...doesn't matter. If the QB can't get them the ball, they are absolutely worthless. It's weird...nobody was complaining about our WR corps in Week 6.
When would you like us to draft this dynamic WR? First round?

If Connor Shaw pitches this Sunday, he arguably won't have an adequate amount of time to prepare. As such, it will probably be difficult to determine anything from his effort. However, I was impressed with his play in the pre-season, actually surprised that he was as good as he showed. I'm hoping this wasn't mis-leading, and am looking forward to a surprising finish to the season - one that will keep the tongues wagging over who should be the QB in 2015.

I would love Shaw to be our Tom Brady, lord knows we could use that.
Not holding my breath obviously.
