Groundhogs Day in Cleveland Once Again

The Browns Board

  • This year was so promising, but here we are in the midst of another devastating second-half collapse. 6-3 seems so very far away.

We passed on impact rookies such as Mike Evans, Aaron Donald, Teddy Twatwater, Derek Carr, and Jimmy Garoppolo, and instead we drafted 3 team cancers - two of them in the first round.

Literally the only defense I have for Johnny at this point is that he has a sample size of 1.2 games. But Christ, 50 plays and only a single good throw? How am I supposed to look forward to this guy as the future?

If that wasn't enough, there's some tension among Farmer, Haslam, Pettine, Loggains, and how the QB situation went down.

Are we in a better place than we were when Mike Holmgren came to town? It doesn't really appear that way. I've got a feeling that some bad, bad things are going to go down this offseason. There's no way this front office exists as is going into the next season. Hopefully it involves getting rid of that bitch of a QB coach, Dowell Loggains, who texted Johnny during the draft like a gaga schoolgirl, and showed Haslam the famous "wreck this league" text.

  • ugh. another one?

can't we just combine all the "woe is me sky is falling threads into one?"

  • Let's beat the shit out of Baltimore and end the season on a positive note. As we should.

  • I am hoping Pettine is going to be the coach that changes some things with the Browns. One good coach can do it. I saw it happen when the Bengals got Marvin Lewis as head coach. In his first year he took the perennial 4-12 Bengals to an 8-8 season and had them competitive in his first year. In his third year they made the playoffs. Maybe they haven't done well in the playoffs but there is something to say about a coach who is able to get his team into the playoffs on a regular basis. (Kind of like Marty Schottenheimer) The Bengals went through years of futility until they settled in with Lewis.

With Pettine we have been competitive and will go 8-8 with a win over the Ravens. We have to get better drafting for sure which has been an achilles heel for the Browns but Haslem has only been owner for a couple years and Pettine and Farmer are new. I'm willing to give them some time. Stability and continuity are something badly needed here in Cleveland.

  • Yes, let's beat Baltimore with Connor Shaw and knock them out of the playoffs!!! Who knows? Maybe the Ole Ball Coach knows something we don't know. At least it's something to look forward to. If Shaw wins then they'll name a high school after him.

  • Great post Ghoulie. I have to say I don't always agree with but you have been making a lot of sense lately.

  • why are we calling JM a "cancer"? There is no call for that. Srsly some people just need to blow their brains out. The hyperbolic rhetoric just gets out of control. It's a game guys. In the end it's a game. Nothing more.

Have to admit, I'm pretty shocked you guys finished like this. I thought this was going to be the emergence year for sure.

Maybe it wouldn't have been any different in the end, but I can't believe your front office allowed the media to force a quarterback change while in a play off hunt. This Johnny Football hysteria ruined your 2014 season.

I think it was severe pressure from the owner to start JFF. It makes no sense to bench a starter because of a couple of bad games. Poor leadership.

It was... just harder to see at 7-8 than it would have been at 9-6.

The Media did not force shit.

It did not force shit Game 1.

It did not force shit coming out of our Bye.

It did not force shit after we crashed in JAX.

Against IND Hoyer's performance finally spiraled to a level believed to be below Manziel's. It turned out not to be the case, but it sure seemed like it had to be the case.

  • I second guessed Pettine and was disappointed Manziel did not play in the fourth quarter of the Colts game with that game so winnable due to a great defensive effort and just a little offense would have won it. As much as I like Hoyer, for whatever reason (and it could be due to losing Mack) he had really been struggling the last 4 games or so. I was shocked at how bad Manziel looked however. In my mind he had 13 games under his belt to learn the playbook, the system and it was not like he was being thrown into the fire the very first game. I was expecting a lot more. I have serious doubts he will ever be an NFL quarterback but the jury is still out. If we cut our losses with JM right now I would not be unhappy except for wasting the draft picks. In reading some comments from Manziel he is quite the salesman and promoter of himself. I tend to take people at their word which in today's world you cannot do. When Manziel said he was going to be a changed guy now after his first season I had forgotten where have I heard that before? Oh yeah he promised the Browns when they drafted him he was a changed guy before the season started. At first I thought maybe Haslem wanted Manziel here for his "star" drawing power but like someone else posted the Browns have such a loyal fan base even with the bad products this organization has put on the field in the past they sell plenty of tickets. I have to believe now Manziel promised them the moon and this club is so starved for success they were seeing the stars. Manziel has so many negatives and after the Panther's game maybe fragile is another one?

4th??? I called for JM in the 2nd vs. IND.

But to even things out, I called for Hoyer in the 2nd vs. CIN.

  • Pettine was right though. Hoyer was the quarterback giving them the best chance to win. Pettine has been criticized for how he handled the quarterback controversy but I don't know how he could have handled it any differently. I don't believe we would have won the Bengals game with Hoyer as the loss was a total team lack of effort. Maybe it could have been predicted a let down by the defense after the deflating loss to the Colts. Fans like me had to see what Pettine was seeing in practice with Manziel. He was not ready. Now I know. I saw it for myself.

    Agree... with everything...

We did not have a clue how wide the performance gap was.

I did not see a CIN win... at best an avoided embarrassment.

Doesn't mean it has to stay that way for JM, but I do not like the odds.
