another 100+ yd game to Forsett...

The Browns Board
13 8 392
  • Does our defense have any balls? Are there any of you that still don't understand the need for an overhaul of our LB'ing corp? We're dead last in the league in run defense, of course I would have been shocked to see that someone was worse.....but were we that bad the year we let Jamaal Lewis run the fuck all over us? That was a bad run year for us but I don't remember that we were giving up around 150 yds avg. And that was Jamaal Lewis of course who set the record that year, in no small part due to our efforts. An interesting question for our stats guys.....was this our worst run defense year ever? If not, when were we worse since 99?

  • Some of the projected DTs that the Browns would take in the draft are Eddie Goldman, Florida State, Danny Shelton, Washington,

Michael Bennett, Ohio St. These are projected first rounders. There are more projected for the second round. We have two picks around 12 and 18. The Browns will be looking at the DT and WR position. I believe in their first two picks. There are potentially 4-5 teams who will go with a quarterback who draft ahead of the Browns. It's going to be fun to watch thses mock drafts in the coming months. Stopping the run will probably be #1 priority along with wide outs.

Didn't I just read another thread where you said we were only a piece or two away? for the entire D?

To answer the question, NO, it wasn't our worst year since 99.

    In fact, we were equally as bad(or worse) in 11, 09, 08, 06, 05, 04, 01, 00, 99. Thats 10 out of 16 years as bad or worse.

    And we were only 100 yards better in 10, 07, 03, 02.

Which means, out of the last 16 years, we had 2 seasons where our run D was measurably better(and in fairness, they were the last 2 years).

Our scoring defense improved by 70 pts this season, which is 4.4 pts a game(20% better) and 9th in the league overall. So, while we definitely need to improve the running defense, you are really hung up on yards, while points are the REAL measuring stick.

I wouldn't throw the bad run D entirely on the LB's.

I would lay most of that blame on the interior D-line.

When Taylor played his last game against the Bungholes, they didn't have shit for a running game.

Im with you. Especially in the scheme we play, where the LB's cover first and the D line is expected to make those stops up front.

I should have been specific about overhauling the "ILB's"..not the entire lb'ing corp. And no I was speaking about the front 7, not the secondary. I've been saying for weeks we're one or two ILB'ers away from being a very good defense. I actually don't think we need to necessarily draft high a DL because even though Rubin is probably gone, we're gonna have Kitchen, Hughes, Taylor, Winn......All of those guys start on other teams. If our scheme is pulling our ILB's too far away from the run lanes than I guess that's on the scheme and not on our guys...but something tells me by midseason they were tossing that out the window cause of how bad we were getting gouged. Our run defense literally cost us a playoff spot, no question about it. Middle of the road run defense and we probably outright win the North.

  • First, Forsett only rushed for 63 yards against us the first time.

Second, Forsett has had five 100 yard games this season.

Your example was both wrong and stupid.

you were right, Forsett rushed for 63 yds against us the 1st game on only 11 carries and Taliaferro rushed for 91 on 18....for a total of 154 yds. The example was wrong on technicality. The fact that we gave up another 100+ yd game missed you? And last sunday Forsett averaged 7.1 ypc. Yes it was totally wrong and stupid, my bad. We're great against the run I see that now.

  • The D-Line was riddled with injuries and ineffective interior line play. That is why the run defense ate dicks. The ILBs played fine. When Phil Taylor was in, the run defense was markedly better.

  • It took only one injury to diminish our five-man O-line.

It took at least three to degrade our three-man D-line.

We're not good against the run.

But to lament the fact that we failed to stop a man with four previous 100-yard games and a year-long 5.4 YPC average, on that a team that averages 4.5 YPA and 127 RuYds/Gm. isn't necessarily the strongest point. Forsett is a decent enough back and the Ravens are a strong rushing team.

    200+ yard games

    5th ranked Houston

    6th ranked Cincinnati

    7th ranked Carolina

    - Giving up 200 rushing yards per game is never good. However, a small positive to take away from this is that these are very strong rushing teams. Houston rushed for over 100 yards in 13 games, twice rushing for over 200. Same for Cincinnati. By comparison, we only managed to rush for 100+ yards in 6 games this season - and we're supposed to be a rush-heavy team.

While upset with our performance in these games, I'm not about to cry about it.

    100+ yard games

    8th ranked Baltimore (twice)

    13th ranked New Orleans

    16th ranked Pittsburgh (twice)

    21st ranked Jacksonville

    25th ranked Buffalo

    26th ranked Tennessee

    29th ranked Tampa Bay

-The ones I'm quite upset about are the ones in bold. These teams are poor rushing teams, with most of them averaging less than 100 yards per game. These are the ones that you take offense to.

    >100 yard games

    32nd ranked Oakland

    6th ranked Cincinnati

    22nd Indianapolis

    25th ranked Atlanta

    - The above Cincinnati game is the one lone bright spot when it comes to our rushing defense. Inarguably our best performance (and the only game I did not watch this season), Cincinnati couldn't get anything going against us on the ground nor in the air. This game highlights the potential of our defense as it stands now.

For once I think we might be on the same page....or chapter, at least.....

Im thinking the D will be formidable with a couple key additions in the middle. A fierce interior D line and LB, added to our great D backfield and we could be a shutdown type of D....

I say screw burning our picks on offensive "reaches", when we can pile on the defense and just shut other teams down(while we look & wait for a quality QB)....

Build this team similar to the Ravens/dilfer model, because thats whats in reach for us right now...
