Weekend Observations. Agree? Disagree?

Like I was saying in the earlier thread, although that non-call was really bad it's hard for me looking at the Cowboys recent history to say they have been getting favorable treatment. If the game was as slanted as some people seem to think the 'Boys would have won another playoff game since 1996 before yesterday. The Cowboys also the past two years were in a "win and in" situation and lost both times. I think that was just a terrible call at a crucial part of the game for sure but idk about a "fix", at least in this instance. I think you could make a much better case of this occurring with the Patriots or Colts in previous years.
My dad every year come playoff time says he wishes the Browns would just draft a big, tall, strong QB. Taking out Russell Wilson, I actually tend to agree that it's no coincidence that the rest of playoff squads all have QB's that fit that mold 100%. I know, I know that's common sense but just saying that out loud.

Dont forget about Romo now, hes not very big either. I tend to think that if a QB is 6'3/220+ and not a fat slob(jamarcus russell) that they have a higher chance to pan out vs. smaller fellas like JF. Im not sayin smaller guys cant make it, just that bigger guys have the advantage. They can absorb the contact from larger D-lineman,lb's better which IMO makes it easier for them to stand and step up in the pocket and not get skiddish like a smaller guy would.
Speaking of large QBs, Cardale Jones looks like he could definitely develope into a STUD QB. Dude looks like Cam Newton on steroids! He'd look good in orange and brown for sure.....

I agree with Trent Dilfer on the phantom call. It was a bad throw and had no chance of completion, there is no face guarding in the NFL anymore and the A bad call that should not have been made was overcalled in the end. And if Detroit decides to punt on 4th and 1 while Dallas risks all on 4th and 6, then shame on the Lions for not having the courage to win the game.

if detroit would have stopped drafting wide receivers years ago and instead built up their OL, matthew stafford might have a chance in some of these games that he 'chokes' in. it's pretty easy to choke when you're being pulled down by some 300+ pass rusher.

agreed. Plus Stafford had a pretty good game no? 323 yds I believe. Scored 20 points. On most Sundays with that defense, 20 points is enough. I'd take Stafford here in Cleveland "in a heartbeat".

But he did nothing when it was time to put the game in the bag. They had what? a 20-6 lead I think. Did they score at all in the second half? Stafford did little after that point.

Here are various observations that I will make about this past weekends playoff games:
A. Injuries Matter. Anyone that says that "injuries is no excuse" is really an idiot Because whether or not injuries are an excuse, they are an explanation. Do you think it mattered that the Cardinals had their first and second string QBs out of action? Do you think it mattered that the Bengals didn't have AJ Green and Jermaine Gresham? Do you think it mattered that the Steelers didn't have Leveon Bell?
Fuck yes it mattered...and quite possibly explained why those teams lost.
B.. Quarterbacks matter. The Colts won partially because Andrew Luck was better than Andy Dalton (plus see A above). Cam Newton was better than anything the Cards could throw in there (but I don't know why the Cards didn't try Logan Thomas...who could not have done worse than Ryan Lindley).
In two games the QBs situation was pretty even: Dallas/Detroit, Baltimore/Pittsburgh. In one, the QB was an issue, in the other it was other factors.
C. The referees and the league appear to be slavering over themselves to allow the Cowboys to continue on in these playoffs. Detroit could have probably won that game except for the reversal of that pass interference call. It really smacked of favoritism. As bad as that was, it was compounded by the fact that the refs did make two defensive holding and PI calls against Detroit on the Cowboys game winning drive that were far less egregious than the call that should have been upheld against Dallas. Sorry, but that whole series of events to my mind brings into question the legitimacy of the whole playoff setup.
D. That all said.....Lions QB Matt Stafford is a bona fide choker. A loser. As much talent as he appears to have....and as much talent as that team has around him, and as mediocre as the Dallas Defense really is, he should have found a way to blast that team out of the stadium. But he couldn't. They talk about Jay Cutler being the next Jeff George.....Stafford is Cutler, just without the bad attitude....but that dude cannot make plays when it counts....even with two of the best WRs going for him in Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate.
E. I don't recall if Ben Tate contributed to the Browns defeating the Steelers earlier this year, but in that game Saturday, Ben Tate contributed mightily to the Steelers defeat. The flubbed pass to him that ended up being intercepted by Suggs was, in my mind, THE critical play of that game. It allowed the Ratbirds the chance to get an insurmountable lead in that game.
F. And, oh yea? Why have a "concussion protocol" when you are going to allow players that have had their bell rung badly back into the game after only a few plays? I think like the league wanting the Cowboys to win, they also did not want to see this game being in the hands of the likes of Bruce Gradkowski? When BR went into the game he probably could tell yellow from black from purple.
How do Steeler fans like having the fate of their team in the hands of Bruce Gradkowski....the one time 4th string QB of the Browns. When BR starts getting dinged again next year and will have to really sit because of concussions....Saturday will be what your team will look like a lot in the future possibly.
G. I hate that I now have no team really to pull for in these playoffs except for the perhaps the Carolina Panthers. Fuck Baltimore/Denver/New England/Indy/Dallas/GB/Seattle. At this point I am down to wanting the Panthers to win it (maybe it is only fair since my high school was the Panthers). If not them, then perhaps I would like to see Seattle win so as to be considered the start of a dynasty.

The Cardinals would have seriously challenged Seattle if Palmer was healthy. I'm surprised Big Ben didn't rip up the Ratbird secondary, even without Bell at RB. I thought this was the year Cincy took a bigger step, but nope.

I feel bad for the Lions fans, that was horrible.

The pass was high. Maybe he was rusty, since the Browns only threw to their backs on 27 plays all year (wtf).

Pretty much the same feeling I have. I have absolutely no interest in the AFC at all, and am hoping Carolina takes down Pete Carroll the cheater.

Belle being out surely impacted the Steelers and benefited us. There's no denying that.
But in a way it evened the playing field as they had 3 players on IR to our 19.
We won without out starting tackles, starting corner, starting tight end, and our 2nd Cb on the depth chart (keep in mind our second best CB came from playing on the practice squad a month ago to starting due to the massive amount of injuries at the position) got hurt and missed a significant portion of the game.
So injuries certainly impact the games...and impact both sides, as hardly any team this time of year is healthy.
Would you rather go into a game missing your top rb or missing both your starting tackles?
Keep in mind both their replacements are rookies, on drafted in the 4th round one completely undrafted.

I see only 3 real players on the IR list for you: Smith, Brown, Pitta.

The Browns have gone into game missing that and more....tell us: which games did Keith Wenning play QB for you?
Keep in mind both their replacements are rookies, on drafted in the 4th round one completely undrafted.
Yea, nice try. I mean, I see all those IR players and gotta believe some kind of stashing was going on.
We played you all with out top 2 QBs out, three of our 6 rotating D Linemen out. Our FS out, our Center out. One of our starting WRs out.
Your edge was that Flacco still played....and we had our version of Keith Wenning.

There's many more, as a elaborate below...Brown isn't even a vital player, shows how much you really know about the Ravens current squad.
Ricky Wagner, starting RT; Jah Reid, Wagners back up; Jimmy smith, number 1 corner; Asa Jackson #3 corner Danny gorer #4 corner (keep going eventually we got down the Melvin from the practice squad and a bunch of converted safeties playing corner.) Dennis Pitta, starting TE; Lorenzo Taliaferro, #2 running back; and Terrence Brooks, starting safety. Everyone else I'll concede aren't vital players but the list I just gave you is 8 vital starters are vital back ups that are now replaced with guys who wouldn't be on the roster otherwise, plus 2 more defensive backs that were depth that we also lost. so 10 total important players, 5 starters. Plus, while not on IR, we were without Monroe our starting left tackle.

Completely irrelevant to my point...and to my question which you didn't answer.

Somehow we went from talking about the ravens vs. Steelers to Ravens vs. Browns.
The injuries to qb obviously were killer for you. Lucky we have Flacco who's never missed a game.
The other injuries only slightly tilt to your favor in my mind.
Top Wr washed with losing Pitta.
Center out washes with being with one tackle, then being without both.
Starting safety washes with starting corner
You had many injuries to DL, where we had only one and a suspension to Ngata, but that's still in your favor as we have tremendous depth at that position.
So only a slight advantage to you.
But against the Steelers I'd say playing without your starting tackles and starting TE is worse than being without your top RB.

OK, I will answer you: I would have rather gone into a game missing the players that you were missing than missing the players the Browns were missing.
Keep in mind both their replacements are rookies, on drafted in the 4th round one completely undrafted.

Because this is, after all, The Browns Board. There is no point of discussion on here where the Browns are not a relevent part of. Ya folla?
The injuries to qb obviously were killer for you. Lucky we have Flacco who's never missed a game.
Yes...you are lucky.....and the luck goes beyond just him never having missed a game.....it goes to the fact that I grudgingly have to concede that he is pretty good.....and to the fact that the Browns still don't have a decent QB....even uninjured. Hoyer's psyche became injured before his body did.
So, to even things out, next year in your two games vs. the Browns you can give Flacco a rest and make him inactive for the games vs. the Browns.....and play Keith Wenning.
The other injuries only slightly tilt to your favor in my mind.
Top Wr washed with losing Pitta.
But we also lost our starting TE for half the season, as well. The starting WR I was talking about was Miles Austin, not Gordon.
Gordon out 11 games for stupidity....Jordan out half the games with injury. Austin only missed a couple.
Center out washes with being with one tackle, then being without both.
Except your tackles were not much better than your backups. Our center was the best in the game.....and no backup could come close to his capabilities.
Starting safety washes with starting corner
Ours made the Pro Bowl.
You had many injuries to DL, where we had only one and a suspension to Ngata, but that's still in your favor as we have tremendous depth at that position.
Browns had tremendous depth as well.....but then they began falling like bowling pins: Armonty/Ishmaaly/Taylor/The Sausage King....all missed a lot of time.
So only a slight advantage to you.
But against the Steelers I'd say playing without your starting tackles and starting TE is worse than being without your top RB.

A,B,C,F...........Totally agree
G.....................Somewhat agree, although I can get equal pleasure out of seeing some of them lose.
D.....................don't think Stafford is that bad
E.....................Steelers should have went with what they already had instead of bringing in Tate.
