He will be a good qb in the NFL. I would have loved to see him in Cleveland over Manziel.
His play will be very similar to Jonny Shitfaced. They have similar skill sets and they both lack the ability to throw a football with velocity.

After being drafted by the Pats he worked on arm strength and mechanics and by anyones admission is a great NFL QB.
Would Mariota be able to do this? Maybe. He does have the character (lacking in Twatziel) to put in the work to get better, and to learn to be a pocket passer.
Is he a first round pick? After this, probably not. But see all Ghoulie's points.

Did you watch the same game I watched? When the Oregon D line got to Cardale, and they did regularly, he punked them. When the opposing QB runs and knockes the nose tackle back or on his ass then the QB is punking the defense. They only really made Cardale Jones make a mistake once - the mystery fumble that netted them... A field goal.

I think Mariota will be fine in the pros.......and you never know, perhaps the Browns will be in position to contemplate drafting him....if he supposedly sucks so bad that he slips down in the first round all the way to 12 where the Browns pick......but, nah, ain't going to happen. 8-9 teams ahead of them need QBs.

Prior to the 2002 championship game, Miami Ken Dorsey was in much the same position as Marcus Mariotta. A bowl loss by an underdog really sank his draft status. And the same thing when Florida beat OSU in the championship - Troy Smith slid to 6th round status in a hurry.
Isn't Mariotta a Junior? Could he play another year and "repair" or "advance" his game?

A lot of the throws in the Oregon offense are timing based. They may be "simple" but the throw has to be quick and decisive or else it's incomplete or worse. Use your brain here it's not hard to understand. Of course I'm sure you are still too consumed about the fact DA was 2-0 as a starter this year.

Honestly,
Mariotta is a high character, very smart kid, with tremendous talent to be a great qb
in the NFL.
So he isn't ready to be that yet. No big freaking deal. Ohio State played a GREAT GAME and
they have a GREAT COACH.
That was one of the greatest all time college games we'll ever see, I think.
BTW, ....Ohio State won with a big kid at qb...who only had three starts.....

But- if they were dropping 8, he also made some pinpoint bombs into tight coverage. That laser he tossed over the middle through the Oregon D has to be one of the most amazing throws I've ever seen- college or Pros.
If the Buckeyes hadn't had 4 turnovers- this game would have been an embarrassing blowout.

Meyer was a terror in the SEC - 2 championships (including 1 against OSU). After the first Oregon drive he got smart and played containment football. Hold the outside with the ends, squeeze with linebackers and let the stretched out O line deal with the tackles. Mario had no place to go. He is a brilliant strategist and since he mellowed after his heart issue, he has become an even better coach. Great game and hats off to OSU.
Without a playoff they never would have got that chance. The system worked for once.

Until the Big 12 minus 2 has a real end of season championship game it will not work for them unless one of those teams goes undefeated or they switch to an 8 team playoff. Their commissioner is doggedly stating they will not add teams nor have a championship game. Until then, this will not be a fair system for that league.

You know DA almost came back to Cleveland with Chud, but he decided he'd rather be the backup in Carolina than the starter in Cleveland. He's under contract for next year in Carolina so unfortunately "that train has sailed". Something tells me those two W's won't be the last time he sees the field in Charlotte.
