  • I don't really have an entire album that's my favorite, but here are some of my favorite songs that are better when they're performed live. In Pink Floyd's Learning to Fly, the solos and riffs have so much more feeling than the studio version. The acoustics of the concert version give the bass and vocals a reverberation that booms versus the rather plain sounding studio version. The trio of female backup vox has a whole hell of a lot more soul in person.

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
    Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction is holding me fast,
How can I escape this irresistible grasp?

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought, I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension -- that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss

Can't keep my mind from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

  • Again, the studio version of this song is pedestrian, minimizing the role of the guitar, and instead relying on an unsettling emptiness accompanying the industrial synth. In the live version, they crank up the distortion on the guitars, creating a driving force as a lead-in to a much more emotional performance from vocalist Trent Reznor. The anger and emotion that he's able to channel through his voice through this song regularly sends shivers down my spine. The cheers from the crowd at the opening of the song get the adrenaline flowing, and this song is a staple of my lifting playlist.

    hey God
why are you doing this to me?
am i not living up to what i'm supposed to be?
why am i seething with this animosity?
    hey God
i think you owe me a great big apology.

    terrible lie
    terrible lie
    terrible lie
    terrible lie

    hey God
i really don't know what you mean.
seems like salvation come only in our dreams.
i feel my hatred grow all the more extreme.
    hey God
can this world really be as sad as it seems?

    terrible lie
    terrible lie

    terrible lie

don't take it away from me.
i need someone to hold on to.
don't take it away from me.
i need someone to hold on to.

    hey God
there's nothing left for me to hide.
i lost my ignorance, security and pride.
i'm all alone in a world you must despise.
    hey God
i believed your promises, your promises and lies.

    terrible lie
    terrible lie
    terrible lie
    terrible lie

you made me throw it all away.
    my morals left to decay.
    how many you betray.
    you've taken everything.

    terrible lie.
my head is filled with disease.
my skin is begging you please.
i'm on my hands and knees.
i want so much to believe.

i need someone to hold on to.
i need someone to hold on to.
i need someone i need someone.

It's not for everyone. I don't like a lot of his hits but underneath those he has a lot of worthy songs

True and I've heard a few I like. Just mostly it seems to meander and go nowhere. I especially can't stand crash.

On first listen to him in general I thought it would be somebody I would be on board for but couldn't close it.

still I like him better than Jack Johnson!

There's some songs on the crash album that I really like. Two step, #41, and drive in drive out come to mind.

Nine inch nails easily makes my top five concerts that should have been awesome but we're totally ruined for me.

Why's that? I've never seen them live.

  • The company I went with was bad. Fighting with a girlfriend at the time. The show was good but I had a hard time enjoying it.

  • That was at further down the spiral tour in 99. actually now that I think of it I saw them with bowie once in maybe 96 or 97 and that was pretty sweet.

  • genesis. seconds out. even though gabriel is gone by then, the band performs things better live than most musicians do with 12 takes in the studio.

  • This song reminds me of the Philippines. Almost every bar in Subic Bay played it, with the whores dancing around. Right on the way to and back from Desert Storm.

toto (before they became the band and released albums) were known as the best studio musicians in the cali area.

lukather is a fave of mine. not enough respect. neil schonn as well.

schonn and perry were the shizapp!

(greg rowland of course even less appreciated)

Neal Schon,Luke, And Michael Schenker were all huge influences on Me along with Al Dimeola,SRV and Michael Landau along with Jeff Beck. They all had one common theme. They were very melodic and had a great guitar sound.. Id be remised if I left out Brad Gillis from Night Ranger. He was every bit a influence as anybody.. He really put Mesa boogie (amplification) on the map with Lukather and Santana. Greg Rollie.. His real name is actually Greg Erico. Another under appreciated artist as well.

  • Nice list of influences....thumbsup.gif

Probably the first live album that got my attention was RUSH's "Exit Stage Left"... I'd like to say Rare Earth's "Gettin Ready" but it wasn't really a live album.. It just featured the DJ friendly lengthy "gotta take a dump" 20+ minute version of "Gettin Ready".. I still have it on vinyl around here somewhere... Anyhow, My mom was a professional guitarist in the 60s which was unusual for that day and age. I vividly remember her band's rehearsals and performances thruout Michigan,Ohio, Penn, NY and pretty much the NE corridor in the 60s.. But their style didn't grab me... I remember playing "Little Black Egg and "Wipe Out" as a kid at the school talent thing..

Hendrix got my attention... But for some reason RUSH really rang my bell when WMMS ran them up the flag pole back when...... Been a fan ever since..

Jimi got the ball rolling for Me.. I was 11 years old..and riding in My mothers car on the freeway. She had Woodstock on 8 track cassette. I heard Hendrix at Woostock for the very first time. I had a religious awakening and it changed My life...I knew right then, what I wanted to do..

  • Speaking of rare earth at one point there was a plan to get my band, Easy Street, bind to Philadelphia International. Our manager at the time was a cousin of one of the temptations and knew someone at Philly who were looking for a white "soul" group as a counterpart to Motown's rare earth. It never came to pass but...

(We were planning on tailoring our style a bit )
