Ahhh....no.
Doesn't work like that in the real world.
There's such a thing as "the fall guy".
If the Browns win less than 5 games next year. He's a goner.
-
I think he did well enough pre-major injuries to justify staying at least that long regardless of the JM pick.

He did well enough to guarantee him next year. But the schedule we have next year is brutal. I'm arguing even if the Browns go 5-11 next year, Pettine is going to keep his job.

Whoever said the Browns live in the real world? Browns fans should know that isn't the case. Seriously though, Haslam picked Pettine. He said in the press conference when they hired him that "he was really committed to Mike Pettine." The question was implying why they didn't go with someone else that was being considered, someone that Lombardi and/or Banner were backing. We all know what happened to Banner and Lombardi once Pettine was hired.
No, Pettine is Haslam's guy. He isn't going to fire him next year, even if they tank.

"If" manziel fails? He already has.

Agree with the conclusion, if not the reasoning, O...
I still don't really buy the whole "JM was Haslam's pick" theory, but true or not, I do know that Pet was Haslam's pick.
Given the unresolved QB situation and the looming rise in schedule difficulty I believe that our 2015 will not be the determining factor in Pet's immediate future. While Haslam is undoubtedly a "bottom-line guy", I think he understands that turning around the team, changing it's culture is a process. So long as he sees Pet making moves consistent with the vision for the turn around and signs that the team is progressing, I think he sticks with Pet through 2016.

Manziel was one of the worst mistakes made by the current Browns org. Not just Manziel himself but the collateral damage to the team. It wasn't that long ago I saw the photo of Manziel and Gordon partying it up in Colorado. Now Gordon is banished from the NFL for a year for drinking. What kind of example does Manziel set? Not good on many levels. His lack of work ethic, lack of maturity, lack of any leadership. He is the opposite of what the Browns say they are trying to build.
I would be done with both Manziel and Gordon.

Very much doubt it.

Hey, why not talk about what Bigfoot likes for dinner and debate that? It's the same thing.
I hear he really loves goulash.

So in essence it is in Mike Pettines best interest for Johnny to fail? Well that should make for a lot of fun next season.

Then Pettine should be golden.

Yeah, why not re sign Couch? He was better than Manziel? Cribbs was a loser. At his beast, he was blah. Wow, kick returns....... SO VERY VERY important to winning in the NFL.
How many people remember who returned kicks and punts for Denver SB teams? GB? Cribbs is a folk hero, I get it. BUt calling him a great player is like calling Clapton a great guitar player. Two over rated people.
The point is, there is nothing to discuss about Manziel. There is no point in playing this guy. Why is he even on the team? He has no trade value, no skills and no marketability. Cut the cocksucker and move forward.
Instead, we are going to mentally mastrubate about his mechanics, his reads, his work ethic. Hey, why not talk about what Bigfoot likes for dinner and debate that? It's the same thing.
I am only saying that we had NOTHING better than him this year....that is how bad things were for us in the kick return game. Let's assume you are totally correct about Cribbs. he was still better than what we had.
So.....what is your solution to fix the Browns return game?

I agree with your reasoning as well as mine, though I still think Manziel was Haslam's pick. I also agree Haslam realizes it is a process. I think when he hired Pettine he said there wouldn't be any more major coaching changes for a while, and I think he is going to stick to it.

Actually I'm saying if Manziel fails, it isn't his fault, and if he succeeds, Pettine comes off looking good. So it is a win-win for his job security.

"If" manziel fails? He already has.
No he hasn't. At least in the long run, as of now. He still has a chance to pull it together.
Will he? It's anywhere from who knows to it isn't looking good, but it isn't over.
As for Pettine, unless he does some really stupid things, he isn't going anywhere after next season. He is here for at least next season and the majority of the following.

they won't win 5, they play the nfc west and the afc west let alone our own division...they might win 4....even if they win 5 or 6, pettine will be gone...he's just another bonehead that haslem really doesn't want....i don't know who he thinks will want to come in and command this dreadful piece of shit franchise to begin with anyway..need a new owner...

and you know this because...listen, its been leaked out already that haslem really did not want pettine to begin with.....just like everyone else thought that shazmanski or whatever his name was got canned after 1 season...poor pettine...it don't get any better for him as we play the nfc west and afc west this yr let alone our own division 2x...man o man...and now i saw that gordon might be ousted this yr on a dui...heard it on espn pti....what a shitass organization ... i hope hoyer tells haslem to go pound sand...if i'm hoyer i'm trying to get back to new england asap...

So I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and hearing Adam Caplan on CBD reinforce the idea that Haslam is responsible for the Manziel pick cemented this opinion even more.
We all know Manziel sucked last year. So who should get the blame for him being on the team? If you think it's Pettine or Farmer, the answer would be no. Farmer wanted Bridgewater but was pressured into trading up to take Manziel. So the person who shoulders the blame for Manziel is Haslam.
So if Haslam has a shred of integrity, he won't not fire Pettine or Farmer because he is the one who put them in this hole. So if Manziel fails, Pettine's job is safe. If Manziel succeeds, then the Browns are winning and his job is guaranteed.
This gives me a bit of hope for continuity for the Browns which I hope leads to winning.

If, and I do mean if, the conspiracy theory is true, then I would imagine that Jimmy Haslam could easily blame coach Mike for sabotaging his boy.Actually I'm saying if Manziel fails, it isn't his fault, and if he succeeds, Pettine comes off looking good. So it is a win-win for his job security.
I've been in enough situations where malcontents purposely dodge their responsibilities so the plan the opposed never succeeds.

I'm still banking on Pettine being the right coach for this team and hoping he is going to be here a long time. The Browns have to get off this merry go round with tearing everything down in 1-3 years and starting over. The first step is getting the right people in place which I believe they do with Farmer and Pettine. I got a couple of things I wanted to see this year with Pettine. The team goes out and plays hard for him and they were competitive in his first year.
