  • A bit more context to his speech(sorry about format taken from c-span) http://www.c-span.org/video/?324188-1/2015-national-prayer-breakfast

"TO DO RIGHT WE ALSO SEE FAITH BEING TWISTED AND DISTORTED, USED AS A WEDGE, OR WORSE, SOMETIMES USED AS A WEAPON. FROM A SCHOOL IN PAKISTAN TO THE STREETS OF PARIS, WE HAVE SEEN VIOLENCE AND TERRORISTS PERPETRATED BY THOSE WHO PROFESS TO STAND FOR FAITH, THEIR FAITH. PROFESSED TO STAND UP FOR ISLAM BUT, IN FACT, ARE BETRAYING IT. WE SEE ISIL, BRUTAL, VICIOUS DIFFICULT THAT IN THE NAME OF RELIGION CARRIES OUT UNSPEAKABLE ACTS OF BARBARISM. CARE RISING RELIGIOUS MINORITIES LIKE THE YAZIDIS COME SUBJECTING WOMEN TO RAPE AS A WEAPON OF WAR AND CLAIMING A MANTLE OF RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY FOR SUCH ACTIONS. WE SEE SECTARIAN WAR IN SYRIA, THE MURDER OF MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA, RELIGIOUS WAR AND THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC ARISING SIGNS OF HATE CRIMES IN EUROPE. SO OFTEN PERPETRATED IN THE NAME OF RELIGION. AND SO HOW DO WE AS PEOPLE OF FAITH RECONCILE THESE REALITIES? THE PROFOUND GOOD, THE STRENGTH, THE TENACITY, THE COMPASSION AND LOVE, THAT CAN FLOW FROM ALL OF OUR FAITHS, OPERATING ALONGSIDE OF THOSE WHO SEEK TO HIJACK RELIGION FOR THEIR OWN MURDEROUS ENDS. HUMANITY HAS BEEN GRAPPLING WITH THESE QUESTIONS THROUGHOUT HUMAN HISTORY, AND UNLESS WE GET ON OUR HIGH HORSE AND THINK THAT THIS IS UNIQUE TO SOME OTHER PLACE, REMEMBER THAT DURING THE CRUSADES AND THE INQUISITION PEOPLE COMMITTED TERRIBLE DEEDS IN THE NAME OF CHRIST. IN OUR HOME COUNTRY, SLAVERY AND JIM CROW ALL TOO OFTEN WAS JUSTIFIED IN THE NAME OF CHRIST. MICHELLE AND I'VE RETURNED FROM INDIA, AND INCREDIBLE, BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY FULL OF THIS MAGNIFICENT DIVERSITY, BUT A PLACE WHERE INVESTORS RELIGIOUS FAITHS OF ALL TYPE ON OCCASION HAD BEEN TARGETED BY OTHER PEOPLES OF FAITH, SIMPLY DUE TO THEIR HERITAGE AND THEIR BELIEFS, ACTS OF INTOLERANCE THAT WOULD HAVE SHOCKED GANDHI, THE PERSON WHO HELPED LIBERATE THE NATION. IT'S NOT UNIQUE TO ONE GROUP OR ONE RELIGION. THERE'S A TENDENCY IN US, A SIMPLE TENDENCY THAT CAN PERVERT AND DISTORT OUR FAITH. IN TODAY'S WORLD WHEN HATE GROUPS HAVE THEIR OWN TWITTER ACCOUNTS AND BIGOTRY CAN FESTER IN HIDDEN PLACES IN CYBERSPACE, IT CAN BE EVEN HARDER TO COUNTERACT SUCH INTOLERANCE. GOD COMPELS US TO TRY. AND IN THIS NATION I BELIEVE THERE ARE A FEW PRINCIPLES THAT CAN GUIDE US PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO PROFESS BELIEF. AND FIRST WE SHOULD START WITH SOME RECENT HUMILITY. I BELIEVE THAT THE STARTING POINT OF FAITH IS SOME DOUBT. NOT BEING SO FULL OF YOURSELF AND SO CONFIDENT THAT YOU ARE RIGHT AND THAT GOD SPEAKS ONLY TO US AND DOESN'T SPEAK TO OTHERS, THAT GOD ONLY CARES ABOUT US AND DOESN'T CARE ABOUT OTHERS, THAT SOMEHOW WE ALONE ARE IN POSSESSION OF THE TRUTH. OUR JOB IS NOT TO ASK THAT GOD RESPOND TO OUR NOTION. OUR JOB IS TO BE TRUE TO HIM AND HIS WORD AND HIS COMMANDMENTS, AND WE SHOULD ASSUME HUMBLY THAT WE ARE CONFUSED AND DON'T ALWAYS KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING. WE ARE STAGGERING AND STUMBLING TOWARDS HIM, AND HAVE SOME HUMILITY IN THAT PROCESS. AND THAT MEANS WE ARE TO SPEAK UP AGAINST THOSE WHO WOULD MISUSE HIS NAME TO JUSTIFY OPPRESSION OR VIOLENT OR HATRED WITH THAT FIERCE CERTAINTY. NO GOD KNOWS THEY ARE, NO JUSTIFIES THE TAKING OF INNOCENT LIVES, OR THE OPERATION OF THOSE WHO ARE WEAKER OR FEWER IN NUMBER. AND SO AS PEOPLE OF FAITH WE ARE SUMMONED TO PUSH BACK AGAINST THOSE WHO TRY TO DISTORT OUR RELIGION. IN AIN THE RELIGION, FOR THEIR OWN A NIHILISTIC ENDS. HERE AT HOME AND AROUND THE WORLD WE WILL CONSTANTLY REAFFIRM THAT, THAT FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOM, FREEDOM OF RELIGION, THE RIGHT TO PRACTICE OUR FAITH, HOW WE CHOOSE TO CHANGE OUR FAITH IT WHICH IS, TO PRACTICE NO FAITH AT ALL IF WE CHOOSE. AND TO DO SO FREE OF PERSECUTION IN FEAR AND DISCRIMINATION. THERE IS WISDOM IN OUR FOUNDERS, WRITING IN THOSE DOCUMENTS THAT HELPED FOUND THIS NATION, THE NOTION OF FREEDOM OF RELIGION. BECAUSE THEY UNDERSTOOD THE NEED FOR HUMILITY."

  • That was the teleprompter speech. His true feelings were spelled out in the other text.

  • what other text?

you can listen to his speech if you want this part starts about 1:20 mark and goes on about 8 mins or so

  • The part that you are blocking out of your head I guess.

If you need to go back hundreds of years to equate extremism you are an idiot. I don't think all Muslims are extremists by any means but I don't give a fuck about the Crusades.

  • Also I call bullshit on blaming Christianity for slavery. Christianity probably had the biggest part in ending it.

When did he blame Christianity for slavery?

    How did Christianity end slavery?

  • Steve you are not 100% right\wrong on christianity playing a part of ending slavery, while there was abolitionists(many used their religious view as reasons) in the North there was equal people in the South using the Bible as justification. The biggest parts where the change to industrialism and our own beliefs in freedom.

Also do you feel the KKK(and groups of that sort), which hold Christianity as one of their principals, to be recent enough for examples?

Because the Ku Klux Klan is fucked up in just about every comparison to mainstream Christianity.

Do you blame Osiris for the act of Isis?

No, but I also don't blame all muslims(as some have done) for the acts of ISIS either, just trying to show what he was referring to with the slavery and jim crow eras, because lets just say the KKK did some very f'ed up stuff during the early 1900's until probably the 1960's.

I'd say they are still fucked up today, so what? Also a big so what do people who blame all Muslims for Isis.

Also slavery was a common practice across the world since Roman times and beyond. Since before the birth of Christ.

Why should millenia of history be ignored? The point he's trying to make is that they're not doing it because they're Islamic. It's a valid thing to say because this country has a significant number of people like this

    Islam-Truck.jpg

And it's pretty widespread, even on this forum, take a look at some of the posts from Walter.

I think he's just bringing that up because you claim that Christianity ended slavery.

  • A well walter is neither a Christian nor a man with the balls to back up his ass hole posts.

B if you don't believe slavery was around for eons before Christianity I can't help you.

And if you don't believe that Christians and free thinkers played a major role in ending the practice...

  • For myself I hereby I apologize for the Crusades, slavery, the plague and the way the neanderthals treated Cro Magnons.

(and I will take that back if I'm ever running for office and there is a substantial Neanderthal vote)

    B. I don't think anyone is claiming that Christian either created slavery or where the only ones with slavery, slavery was around long before christ(ancient egypt and greece are both known for having slaves), but christians like many cultures rationalized for a long period of time it could exist(over a thousand years). I was also not claiming that Christianity didn't play a role in abolitionist movement. However I place more weight that on the Free Thinkers of the time then onto religion.

Its not a matter of wanting an apology its a matter of telling people don't point the finger at islam for these tragedies that are being committed, point it at those who warp religion to this. He used references to his own religion where people justified horrific things in the name of religion, as a way to remind people to be vigilant and to not let the hate groups gain and to keep people humble.
