It's the HEART of the guy, his LOVE for football...mental toughness, desire

to be the best football player he can be, the DESIRE TO WIN.

Like Tom Brady. He royally sucked at his combine. Go figure, eh?

In football there are some with natural ability and others who through self will, heart and determination somehow succeed when all the stats say they shouldn't. I have always liked players like this. The ones who are able to make up the deficit by watching more game films, spend more time in the weight room, and are always looking for any edge they can find and are able to compete when on paper they should not be on the field.

It's still extremely hard to find those guys. Earning a paycheck especially a large one can make anyone complacent. It's also easy for talented guys to believe to much in their talent. Then when they get in the pros they get hammered, and lose confidence. It's rare to find people like Clay Mathews Jr., and J.J. Watt.

More proof that the combine means very little. Either a guy can play football or he can't.

The combine doesn't mean very little. Nor should it be the end all be all in evaluation. But you can ask prospects that made a good impact on their team that climbed up the board because of the combine. Freeney, CJ2K, Hartline, DRC, Poe, etc etc.

Plenty can be shown to jump draft stock and increase prospect value.

I thought Mayock put it well. He said you come to the Combine with an idea of what a player's measureables should be based upon the tape you've seen. When the results are significantly different, either better or worse, it tells you that you have more work to do on that player.

In addition I think it opens your eyes to a player you never would have looked at. Ali Marpet is the early contender for the overlooked, poster boy this year. He's measuring like a world beater. Even if you had looked, then you might have attributed his great play at Hobart to the level of competition.

And then there are the drills... not quantifiable, but extremely revealing by design, but you have to watch them for them to be of use.

The combine produced the workout warrior David Veikune, and overlooked the GOAT Tom Brady. I guess I don't care how many reps of 225lbs a QB can put up, after all, Brady Quinn sure impressed everyone with his performance.

I do watch it however, because it's football related........ I just hope our FO & scouts rely on their game tape film and pick football players, and not the next workout warrior who ran around cones real fast.

All that matters is the wonderlic score.
