  • If they are losing Sheard and Rubin from the DL....those players will have to be replaced.

How good is this guy compared to Rubin?

On paper - better. 4.5 sacks and 19 tackles last season compared to Rubin's 1 sack and 11 tackles. A yeah before that had 4 sacks and 36 tackles.

Starks is 31 years old and his play against the run started declining two years ago. However, he's very effective at pushing the pocket and generating pressure from the inside.

He's played longer as an interior lineman in the 4-3, but his best season came as a 3-4 RDE, where he racked up 7 sacks and 42 tackles and made the Pro Bowl.

So, at best a very slight upgrade over Rubin. But Rubin does bring to this team some intangibles.....leadership, professionalism. If a reworking of his deal could be made, I would be in favor of keeping him.

Maybe a slight upgrade over 2009 Rubin, but a major upgrade over 2010-present Rubin.

Rubin hasn't been very good for a while now. Those intangibles are fine, but his on-field production isn't worth bringing him back...unless it's at a severe discount.

Starks has performed better than Rubin in essentially every single year of either of their careers and costs about 40% less.

For Rubin to come back, he'd have to be making half of what he's making now. I respect what he did for us, but he's one of the most overpaid players on the team.

  • Further, I think Starks brings about a more useful skill set for the entire team.

Rubin was fair to exceptional at reading the blocker, positioning himself and making the play at, or slightly behind, the LOS. At his best, Rubin ate space and didn't let much pass him. He was, for all intents and purposes, a clean up artist. A great asset to have as it saves your ass from time to time.

Starks, however, gets solid penetration more often than not, which causes a disruption in both the passing and running game. A defensive lineman that pushes the point of attack into the backfield a few yards forces the runningback to choose his lane much earlier or tip-toe around until a lane opens.

That's what Rubin hasn't been able to accomplish as of late.

Starks was, at a time a few seasons ago, listed as the best 3-4 defensive end in the league. Then he was summarily moved inside to allow for the developments of Jared Odrick.

  • ^ Nailed it.

  • OK, then, lets go get him. Or do the Browns intend to let all of the FAs walk and replace them all with rookies? They might could do that....but it doesn't make sense to have that young of a team. I mean, their QB is going to probably be a 37 year old guy.

Again, my philosophy: replace what you lose in FA by signing other FAs (hopefully slightly better ones)....then do your major talent upgrade with the draft......if you don't blow the draft....which the Browns have done.....often.

  • Often......that seems like too soft of a word. I was thinking dumpster fire.

I feel the same way. You can't address all of your needs one way or the other, so maintain through FA and add talent in the draft. With smart drafting, you can add 2-3 starters and 1-2 solid backups a year.

Through smart FA moves you can maintain the level of talent you have and, every so often, find a nice diamond in the rough.

man, for chip kelly's sake it'll take philly at least 5 more years to compete with that way of thinking, and he'll be long gone by then.

hell maybe even after this year if laurie sees the fan uproar with a total collapse.

but in total i agree with your statement. that is the way to build. ONTH you don't just flush and forget to wipe.
